The Fleet of Nigh - Players Wanted

Looking for literate players with a love of science fiction or world building.

Intro:

Life atop the surfaces of planets has ended. The year was 3101 when Earth, founding planet of the Coalition of United Systems, and her people held nearly three dozen worlds under their sway. Without warning, and for reasons entirely lost to all who survived, all sentient life and traces of industrialization vanished. Space stations, and any structures within atmosphere, whether on the surface or not, went with them. Planets were returned to their natural states, and only the far-flung asteroid bases and colonies and fleets of starships remained. These shadows gathered at the major military outpost of Helix where, for a brief time, humanity was once again solidified beneath a single banner: the Union of the Remnant. Eventually this entity dissolved, and from the ashes was born the venerable Fleet of Night. The year is now 22,756 PS (Post-Sweep). Humans, the dominant force in the Fleet, have made contact with innumerable races of aliens, the majority of whom have suffered similar fates as their own. Bolstered by time and number, the Fleet roams the vastness of space, one power among many, as a mobile migratory nation. Can you survive in this era of uncertainty, one amidst billions, or will the weight of Night swallow you?

Hulk Hogan $100M sex tape lawsuit to Fla. court

Terry "Hulk Hogan" Bollea.

By Eriq Gardner, The Hollywood Reporter

In wrestling parlance, Hulk Hogan has just prevailed into pushing Gawker into a more favorable ring to fight a $100 million lawsuit over his leaked sex tape.

On Wednesday, a judge determined that Gawker's attempt to remove Hogan's lawsuit from Florida state court into a federal courtroom was improper. Hogan now has a chance to show how his privacy was invaded before a hometown judge.

To recap, Gawker posted a short excerpt in October of a a 30-minute Hulk Hogan sex tape as well as an essay by A.J. Daulerio that muses about how "we love to watch famous people have sex."

PHOTOS: '80s Action Stars: Where are they now?

Hogan (born Terry Bollea) then sued, alleging a host of legal violations including invasion of his privacy, publication of private facts, misappropriation of his publicity rights and infliction of emotional distress. The former professional wrestler and reality TV star then added a copyright claim in an attempt to score an injunction, but a judge denied the effort because Hogan had failed to demonstrate an immediate and irreparable injury.

Bad judge, Hogan might have thought, willing to defer to the First Amendment so quickly. In response, Hogan, represented by attorney Charles Harder, decided it might be better to find a new judge.

The federal lawsuit was dropped, and a state lawsuit was filed -- this time joining Gawker as a defendant with Heather Clem, his partner in the video who is alleged to have had a role in leaking it.

Gawker then removed the lawsuit back to federal court and blasted Hogan's attorneys for a maneuver "so egregious as to constitute fraudulent joinder."

Hulk Hogan Turns on President Obama on Fox News, Dismisses '9-9-9' Plan

It turns out that Gawker executed the wrong move. On Wednesday, Judge James Whittemore agreed to grant Hogan's motion to remand the case back to state court. Here's the full ruling.

The judge rejects Gawker's arguments that Hogan can't bring a viable claim against Clem because the statute of limitations had expired on when they had sex on tape. "While the date of recording appears on the face of the First Amended Complaint, there are no allegations concerning the date of Heather Clem's alleged publication that would enable an evaluation of the statute of limitations at this stage," writes the judge.

And the judge sees enough commonality in Hogan's claims against Gawker and Clem that he feels the two were properly joined. Citing things like the sex video's chain of custody, the judge says, "The claims against Heather Clem and Gawker are 'logically related' and rest on the same set of operative facts -- namely, the recording and publication of the video."

Gawker was also unsuccessful in arguing that federal law questions existed in the case that would make it more natural in a federal court. The website couldn't, for example, show that Hogan's privacy claims raised constitutional questions nor that Hogan's claims were preempted by federal copyright law. The judge determines that "even though Bollea seeks to regulate and control the distribution and display of the video," his privacy claims require "proof of separate elements," which makes them "qualitatively different from a copyright infringement action."

Therefore, the case goes back to a Florida state court. There, Gawker can continue to raise its defense that that the information it published was newsworthy and protected by the First Amendment. The website still stands a good chance of ultimately prevailing. But the ruling this week likely means that Gawker won't be scoring any quick pin in the battle and will be fighting on turf that's a whole lot less certain and comfortable.

NYC suspect in shooting of 4 released from custody

NEW YORK (AP) ? The man arrested in the fatal shooting of one person and wounding three of others in Brooklyn's Coney Island neighborhood earlier this month has been released from custody.

A spokesman for the Brooklyn District Attorney's office says Saturday a judge ordered 29-year-old Joseph Brown released on Friday.

The spokesman says the investigation is ongoing and Brown is due back in court in May.

Police had said Brown entered an apartment in a public housing complex, walked to a back bedroom and shot a man in the head. Investigators said he then shot three other people in the apartment, killing one.

Monounsaturated fats reduce metabolic syndrome risk

Mar. 29, 2013 ? Canola oil and high-oleic canola oils can lower abdominal fat when used in place of other selected oil blends, according to a team of American and Canadian researchers. The researchers also found that consuming certain vegetable oils may be a simple way of reducing the risk of metabolic syndrome, which affects about one in three U.S. adults and one in five Canadian adults.

"The monounsaturated fats in these vegetable oils appear to reduce abdominal fat, which in turn may decrease metabolic syndrome risk factors," said Penny Kris-Etherton, Distinguished Professor of Nutrition, Penn State.

In the randomized, controlled trial, 121 participants at risk for metabolic syndrome received a daily smoothie containing 40 grams (1.42 ounces) of one of five oils as part of a weight maintenance, heart-healthy, 2000-calorie per day diet. Members of the group had five risk factors characterized by increased belly fat, low "good" hdl cholesterol and above average blood sugar, blood pressure and triglycerides that increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. The researchers repeated this process for the remaining four oils.

The results were presented at the American Heart Association's EPI/NPAM 2013 Scientific Sessions in New Orleans.

Results showed that those who consumed canola or high-oleic canola oils on a daily basis for four weeks lowered their belly fat by 1.6 percent compared to those who consumed a flax/safflower oil blend. Abdominal fat was unchanged by the other two oils, which included a corn/safflower oil blend and high-oleic canola oil enriched with an algal source of the omega-3 DHA. Both the flax/safflower and corn/safflower oil blends were low in monounsaturated fat.

According to the American Heart Association, many of the factors that contribute to metabolic syndrome can be addressed by a healthy diet, exercise and weight loss, which can significantly reduce health risks of this condition.

"It is evident that further studies are needed to determine the mechanisms that account for belly fat loss on a diet high in monounsaturated fatty acids," said Kris-Etherton. "Our study indicates that simple dietary changes, such as using vegetable oils high in monounsaturated fatty acids, may reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome and therefore heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes."

Other authors on the paper include Peter Jones and Shuaihua Pu of the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg; Sheila West, Xiaoran Liu, Jennifer Fleming and Cindy McCrea of Penn State; Ben?it Lamarche and Patrick Couture of Laval University in Quebec; and David Jenkins of the University of Toronto.

The government of Canada, the Canola Council of Canada and Dow Agrosciences funded this research.

5 Tornado Safety Myths Debunked

Tornadoes conjure up images of massive funnel clouds tearing over the expansive Great Plains of the United States during springtime, but tornadoes range in size and strength and can happen anywhere, at any time of the year.

Although freak accidents happen ? and the most violent tornadoes can level a house ? most tornadoes are much weaker than the monster EF5s (the highest tornado rating) most people imagine, the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration's Storm Prediction Center (SPC) says in their tornado FAQ, and knowing proper tornado safety tips can help you get through the storm,.

But there are a lot of tornado safety folklore and myths out there, so it can be hard to know what advice to follow. Here are five of the most pervasive tornado safety myths, as well as a few tips to follow:

Myth #1: Opening windows will equalize pressure.

The SPC said it best: "Opening the windows is absolutely useless, a waste of precious time, and can be very dangerous. Don't do it."

All it might get you is a bunch of debris blown into your house by a tornado's fierce winds ? which could be dangerous. And if a tornado hits your house, it most likely will break the window anyway, the SPC noted.

Myth #2: The southwest corner of a basement is the safest corner.

While a basement is a good place to take shelter from a tornado, no corner of a basement is safer than any other.

According to the SPC, this myth arose from the mistaken belief that most tornadoes come from the southwest and that any debris they generate would fall into the northeast corner of a basement. But tornadoes can arrive from any direction, and their winds are spinning in a vortex and can be blowing from any direction.

If you take shelter in a basement, the best place to be is away from any windows, under a sturdy workbench or mattress, and away from any shelves or other things that might fall on you. You should also make sure you're not directly under any heavy appliances that may be on the floor above.

Myth #3: When you?re on the road, the best place to ride out a tornado is under a bridge.

Definitely not! Do not do this!

Although it might seem like the bridge over your head would protect you, hiding under an overpass or bridge is actually very dangerous, because a tornado's winds can blast debris underneath the structure. The storm's winds could blow you out from underneath and possibly into the tornado itself, or the bridge could collapse on top of you, the SPC warned.

But if you're on the road, you don't want to stay in your car, either. "Vehicles are notorious as death traps in tornadoes, because they are easily tossed and destroyed," the SPC said.

Your options depend on where the tornado is and what's around you. If the tornado is far away or not heading toward you, the best option may be to head in the opposite direction and get out of its path. If it's bearing down on you, and there's a sturdy structure nearby, take shelter there. But if no building is around, get as far away from the road and cars as possible, and lay down in a low spot, the SPC advised.

Myth #4: Tornadoes never cross hills, rivers, roads, etc.

If a particular town or other location hasn't been hit by a tornado that passed nearby, it didn't have anything to do with the area's topographical features, it was just luck, the roll of the dice.

Tornadoes are not guided or repelled by roads, hills, streams or rivers. In fact, a tornado has even crossed the Mighty Mississippi. [Infographic: Tornado Alley Facts & Stats]

The SPC noted that local wisdom had it that towns such as Topeka, Kan., and Waco, Texas, were immune to tornadoes, until they were hit by F5s (in 1968 and 1953, respectively). (The current Enhanced Fujita scale was preceded by the Fujita scale.) ?Those are extreme examples and larger metropolitan areas (more on that in a minute), but plenty of other places have been rudely awakened from various forms of this myth.

Myth #5: Tornadoes avoid big cities.

Related to Myth #4, many people think big cities are immune to tornadoes. That?s not the case: Many cities ? including Dallas, Atlanta, St. Louis (which has been hit a whopping four times) ? have been hit by tornadoes . [Skyscraper Storms: 7 Big City Tornadoes]

Cities can simply seem like they aren't tornado-prone for some innate or meteorological reason when it's really just statistics: Cities occupy a smaller area relative to the surrounding, more rural areas, and are therefore less likely to be hit.

In fact, damage caused by tornadoes can be worse in big cities, due to their high concentration of people and structures. Birmingham and Tuscaloosa, Ala., sustained severe damage from a tornado that tore through both cities on April 27, 2011, and was on the ground for 80 miles (129 kilometers) ? killing 65 and injuring 1,500. The tornado bucked a downward trend in tornado deaths, not only because of its powerful EF4 strength, but also because it hit highly populated areas.

Fly in formation ? Business Management Daily: Free Reports on ...

You want to improve teamwork. So you reward group performance, praise any signs of collaboration and prod loners to become joiners.

That?s a good start, but why stop there?

Raising teamwork to the next level doesn?t mean you must hire team-building consultants and send employees on Outward Bound. Take these simpler steps:

Campaign against an enemy. People will band together if they see themselves as fighting a formidable adversary, especially if they view themselves as the underdog. Focus a group?s attention on a fierce rival. If you run a small retail chain, build team spirit by calling for your troops to trounce the big national department stores.

Publish a ?team book.? Ask every employee to prepare a one-page biography. It can include a photo, a list of hobbies, personal interests and family information. Collect their responses and assemble them in a bound volume that you distribute to everyone, or create a simple web page.

As employees read through the bios, they?ll become better acquainted with their co-workers. They?ll also bond more readily when they learn what they have in common.

Exchange praise. Play the ?anonymous praise? game in which everyone lists what he admires about a specific co-worker. Collect the responses and summarize the highlights in a memo to each team member.

This way, employees see a compilation of praise based on what their peers think of them. By keeping it anonymous, the compliments count even more because the messages?not the messengers?stand out.

Unclog team communication channels. You want teammates to share ideas, but if they?re scattered in field offices or different floors, they may lack ?face time? to update each other. Solution: Use your company?s networking capabilities so that employees can inform each other of new developments. For a low-tech option, designate a centrally located bulletin board as the place for team members to post notices, give progress reports and pose questions.

Newtown massacre search warrants released

Police tape seen outside the Lanza home in Newtown (Getty Images)

NEWTOWN, Conn.?Search warrant affidavits related to the Newtown school shootings were unsealed by judge in Danbury on Thursday, a little more than 100 days after Adam Lanza killed 26 people?including 20 children?at Sandy Hook Elementary School here before turning a gun on himself.

[Related: NRA blasted over Newtown robocalls]

The documents?dozens of pages of affidavits, warrants and items seized from the Newtown home Lanza, 20, shared with his mother, Nancy?paint a chilling picture of the killer in the weeks and months leading up to the Dec. 14 massacre.

Lanza in an undated photo (AP/File)

Lanza shot and killed his mother before driving to the school, shooting his way into the elementary school and opening fire.

Among the items seized by police at

Superior Court Judge John Blawie ordered parts of the documents redacted after state prosecutors requested that the identity of a key witness not be revealed for another 90 days. The judge also approved blacking out some phone numbers, credit card numbers and the serial numbers of some property confiscated from the Lanza home.

Connecticut State Police briefed family members of the Newtown shooting victims on Wednesday on what was recovered inside Lanza's home and car. About 50 family members attended the briefing, according to the Connecticut Post:

A few mothers cried, though most of the parents remained calm. After the more than two-hour session concluded, they left the Municipal Center alone or in small groups, escorted by state police troopers who kept reporters at a distance.

[Related: Images from Newtown, Dec. 14-21, 2012]

Thursday's release came after state lawmakers, media and Newtown residents criticized police officials for leaking details of their investigation at a convention of police chiefs in New Orleans, which were then published by the New York Daily News.

"If state police officers can leak details of the Newtown investigation at conventions, surely that information can be shared with the Connecticut public," the Hartford Courant said in an editorial. "It has more of a right to know than out-of-state police chiefs do. ... This isn't information to be hoarded and shared only at the state police water cooler. The longer information is kept under wraps, the more questions there will be about why. Most important, the details will inform the debate about gun control, mental health and violence in society. There's no reason to fear an informed public."

Connecticut's General Assembly has been considering gun-control legislation in the wake of the Newtown shootings, including a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines. State lawmakers said on Monday they would delay a vote on gun control until after search warrants related to the school shootings were unsealed.

The final police report on the massacre is not expected to be released until June.

New Report Finds Cutting Social Security and Medicare Would Hurt ...

When Republicans talk about cutting taxes, streamlining regulations, and paring back entitlements like Social Security and Medicare, they often claim to do so in defense of "small businesses," the hallowed "job creators" that comprise the backbone of the American economy.

Well, a new report from the Main Street Alliance, a network of state-based small business coalitions, says not so fast! It turns out that many owners of small businesses (businesses with 100 or fewer employees) are counting on Social Security and Medicare to shore up their own retirement years.

Small business owners, like their employees, face challenges saving for retirement. A 2012 study by the U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy found that business owners are ?significantly less likely to hold retirement assets than private sector wage and salary workers,? and that ?owners of smaller businesses with fewer than 25 employees are significantly less likely to invest in retirement assets and have lower amounts of retirement assets than owners of larger firms.?

The study also found that ?financially vulnerable small business owners?those who hold a high percentage of their net worth in business assets?are less likely to invest in retirement assets than owners who are less net worth vulnerable.

Thirty-seven percent of small business owners in Washington State are over the age of 55, according to the report. That's an awful lot of small business owners heading toward or already past the retirement age. And many of them are counting on Social Security and Medicare.

Not that the conservative think tanks that think up such policies could give a shit. One of the biggest American myths is that we cherish and respect small businesses. We don't. We hate entrepreneurialism. In fact, our whole system is set up to put truly small businesses at a competitive disadvantage. For example, our pre-Obamacare healthcare system is designed to shift a disproportionate share of costs onto the backs of small businesses and people forced to buy on the individual market.

No, what we really cherish and respect are successful business owners. Make a ton of money and you're a national hero. But if you are losing money or just comfortably (or barely) scraping by (you know, most small business owners)? You're either lazy or stupid or both. You made bad choices. Go get a real job.

And whatever you do, don't you dare count on the "job creators" to subsidize your medical bills in your old age.

Meeting in the Middle: Training as a Business Opportunity in Egypt ...

Morocco World News

New York, March 27, 2013

The financial crisis has done its best to put Egypt?s economy away in the last couple of years, but Egypt has dug its heels in. Egyptian Government and institutions are hitting back with measures to restore the economy to health.

Meanwhile, it can be hard to start up or run a business in these conditions. How do you do it? There?s work to do and you need people to do it, but there are also labor costs to consider.

On the other side of the equation, what can you do if you?re job hunting but don?t have all the skills required for the job?
The answer lies in training for all.

Train us up

With 750,000 people entering the Egyptian job market each year, and youth unemployment high in the country, training is a solution for job hunters who need to learn new skills and for companies who want to cut their labor costs. While providing them with the skills they need, businesses can offer young people an opportunity and still get the job done.
However, training is more than just a way to cut labor costs. It?s a potentially lucrative business opportunity for entrepreneurs who play their cards right. There?s a distinct lack of in skills among the Egyptian population. Companies who provide training tailored to employment in a specific sector, such as computer training or language tuition, can really capitalize on this.

Where should you look if you?re a business?

Look to the universities. Of the 750,000 people who are entering the Egyptian labor market each year, 200,000 are graduates.
Interestingly, more and more young people are studying business at university. Community services, development, consultancy, communications, social media marketing and IT have also become popular options.

Equipped with theoretical knowledge, graduates leave university hungry to prove themselves. Not only that, they can offer fresh ideas. Many graduates are turning down job offers which they consider themselves to be overqualified for. They?ll be glad of the opportunity.

Where should you look if you?re a graduate?

Many graduates in Egypt are seeking their fortune abroad. But it doesn?t have to be this way. Right now, the industries that offer the most jobs are business, marketing and commercial sales, IT, customer support, engineering and sales and retail.

Of course, starting up your own business is an option. The Internet has changed the face of employment. As governments across the globe wrestle with unemployment figures, many people have made ends meet by setting up their own business, and have used the Internet to do so.

Whether you?re a graduate starting your own business or an entrepreneur who already has your company up and running, remember you?ll need to do some business banking. Despite the turmoil, Egypt still offers great banking facilities. Not only can you manage your business finances, but also benefit from the advice that banks offer with their services for businesses.

And if you?re looking for work, providing work or thinking about setting up your own business, you should consider the option of training. Be it to make money, increase your job prospects or keep your labor costs down, it will get you where you want to be in Egypt.

Old mice, young blood: Rejuvenating blood of mice by reprogramming stem cells that produce blood

Mar. 25, 2013 ? The blood of young and old people differs. In an article published recently in the scientific journal Blood, a research group at Lund University in Sweden explain how they have succeeded in rejuvenating the blood of mice by reversing, or re-programming, the stem cells that produce blood.

Stem cells form the origin of all the cells in the body and can divide an unlimited number of times. When stem cells divide, one cell remains a stem cell and the other matures into the type of cell needed by the body, for example a blood cell.*

"Our ageing process is a consequence of changes in our stem cells over time," explained Martin Wahlestedt, a doctoral student in stem cell biology at the Faculty of Medicine at Lund University, and principal author of the article.

"Some of the changes are irreversible, for example damage to the stem cells' DNA, and some could be gradual changes, known as epigenetic changes, that are not necessarily irreversible, even if they are maintained through multiple cell divisions. When the stem cells are re-programmed, as we have done, the epigenetic changes are cancelled."**

The discovery that forms the basis for the research group's method was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine last year.

The composition of blood is one example of how it ages; blood from a young person contains a certain mix of B- and T-lymphocytes and myeloid cells.***

"In older people, the number of B- and T-lymphocytes falls, while the number of myeloid cells increases," said Martin Wahlestedt.

When an elderly person is affected by leukemia, the cancer often has its origin in the myeloid cells, of which the elderly have more. Being able to 're-start' the blood, as Martin and his colleagues have done in their studies on mice, therefore presents interesting possibilities for future treatment.

"There is a lot of focus on how stem cells could be used in different treatments, but all that they are routinely used for in clinical work today is bone marrow transplants for diseases where the blood and immune systems have to be regenerated," said Martin Wahlestedt, continuing:

"A critical factor that gives an indication of whether the procedure is going to work or not is the age of the bone marrow donor. By reversing the development of the stem cells in the bone marrow, it may be possible to avoid negative age-related changes."

Even if the composition of the blood in old and young mice is remarkably like that in young and elderly people, Martin Wahlestedt stressed that the science is still only at the stage of basic research, far from a functioning treatment. The research group is pleased with the results, because they indicate that it may not primarily be damage to DNA that causes blood to age, but rather the reversible epigenetic changes.

*About stem cells:

There are different types of stem cells. Embryonic stem cells, which can be extracted from an embryo at an early stage, have the capacity to develop into all types of cell. Stem cells are also found in adults, where they have more limited development potential, but can divide in principle an unlimited number of times. For example, blood cell-forming stem cells in bone marrow create all types of blood cell and stem cells in the brain create many different types of brain cell.

**About epigenetics:

Epigenetics is a term that has historically been used to describe the aspects of genetics that cannot be explained by the composition of an individual's DNA alone. For tissue and organs to form, a number of different types of cell must be developed. This happens through the activation and de-activation of different genes. When a cell formed in this manner then divides again, the gene expression can be maintained in the daughter cells. This is referred to as 'epigenetic inheritance'. The epigenetic mechanisms, or which genes are activated or de-activated, can be affected by factors such as age, chemicals, drugs and diet.

*** About the composition of blood:

B- and T-lymphocytes and myeloid cells are all white blood cells. Lymphocytes, as the name suggests, are particularly common in the lymphatic system. T-lymphocytes patrol the body and recognise a specific bacteria or virus. B-lymphocytes 'remember' old infections and can quickly be activated again if required. This memory capacity is the mechanism behind immunity. The myeloid cells belong to the blood system's 'big eaters' -- they neutralise damaged tissue, dead cells, and to a certain extent also bacteria.

Oral Allergy Treatment May Ease Asthma, Hay Fever ... - Health.com

%name Oral Allergy Treatment May Ease Asthma, Hay Fever, Study Finds

By Amy Norton
HealthDay Reporter

TUESDAY, March 26 (HealthDay News) ? Spring is here, and so are seasonal allergies. For the millions who suffer from hay fever or asthma in the United States, a new under-the-tongue treatment may hold promise.

Pills and drops designed to desensitize the immune system to allergens could bring some of these allergy patients relief, a new research review finds.

The review, published March 27 in the Journal of the American Medical Association, pulled together 63 studies on so-called sublingual immunotherapy.

The therapy, commonly used in Europe and Asia, essentially allows people to get traditional allergy shots in the form of pills or drops that dissolve under the tongue. The principle is the same: Expose the immune system to extracts of the substance causing a person?s allergy ? grass pollen, for example ? until it builds up a tolerance.

Right now, no under-the-tongue allergy products are approved in the United States. But some doctors offer the therapy anyway; they take the extracts approved for allergy shots and give them to patients to use orally.

In the new review, researchers found ?strong? evidence that under-the-tongue immunotherapy eased symptoms of allergy-induced asthma: In eight of 13 studies, patients saw more than a 40 percent improvement in symptoms, versus patients who either got a drug-free placebo or standard medication.

The evidence was weaker when it came to nasal allergies. Only nine of 36 studies showed a more than 40 percent drop in symptoms such as congestion, runny nose and itchy eyes.

Still, the majority of studies did show some benefit, said lead researcher Dr. Sandra Lin, an associate professor of otolaryngology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore.

Under-the-tongue products are being evaluated for approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and those results will be helpful, said Lin.

She said the results from European trials cannot be simply translated to the United States because of differences in the potency of the allergen extracts used.

?We need studies to see what are the most effective doses for U.S. patients,? Lin said.

The idea of taking pills instead of getting shots definitely appeals to patients, said Dr. Harold Nelson, an allergy specialist at National Jewish Health in Denver, who wrote an editorial published with the study.

But his advice to U.S. patients was to wait for products to be approved by the FDA.

Even if your doctor offers under-the-tongue immunotherapy, ?there?s no guarantee? it would be the same as the products studied in clinical trials, Nelson said. He noted that U.S. doctors commonly give a patient a mix of different allergen extracts, because that?s how it is done with allergy shots.

But the under-the-tongue products used in clinical trials have contained only a single allergen extract, Nelson said.

Like allergy shots, immunotherapy pills and drops take time to work. They need to be taken daily, for a few years. And they?re not cheap, Nelson pointed out. They can cost $2 or more a day, and insurance companies may not cover it.

As far as safety, Lin said the trials her team reviewed found no serious allergic reactions to the immunotherapy. Most often, patients had ?local? reactions, such as throat irritation and swelling or itching in the mouth.

?But we didn?t do an exhaustive safety review,? Lin stressed. It?s possible that in the real world, some patients have had more serious reactions.

Another big question is whether under-the-tongue immunotherapy is as effective as traditional allergy shots, Nelson said. ?It?s not clear how they compare head-to-head,? he said.

On the other hand, Lin said many more U.S. patients will try immunotherapy if under-the-tongue options are approved. That?s especially true of kids. ?Who?s going to be the least likely to accept allergy shots?? Lin said. ?Young children.?

Twenty of the studies her team reviewed focused solely on children. And kids seemed to fare as well as adults.

Current clinical trials in the United States are looking at under-the-tongue products for allergies to grass pollen, ragweed, cat dander and house dust mites. Lin suggested that for now, patients with allergies or allergy-induced asthma talk to their doctors about all their treatment options.

The study was funded by the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Nelson has received research funds from Circassia, Ltd., which is developing so-called T-cell vaccines to treat allergies.

Curve Appeal: Do Men Know Something About Women's Bodies ...

Curve Appeal: Do Men Know Something About Women's Bodies That Women Do Not?I?ll be the first to admit it: I am sort of a sucker for consumer-friendly psychology magazines. Publications like Psychology Today are full of articles I either enjoy reading or using as fire kindling. Or, when I am really irritated by the content, writing articles on the topic. Like this one.

The article, published in Psychology Today, is titled ?Ahead of the Curves? and the brilliant tagline? ?Men know something vital about women?s body shapes that women don?t. Plus: How big hips make wise women.?

It is six pages long and features illustrations of women who look more like playmates than the women who have the aforementioned ?big hips? and are ?wise? because of it. One of the illustrations boasts a sexy blonde wearing a pastel-pretty bra and tight briefs. She is pursing her red lips ? ready to kiss! She is rather revolting and her hips, well, they certainly are not wise.

That alone is irritating but this is the part that really makes me question my taste in literature: This lengthy article is written by two men.

Their respective names and impressive education are listed in very small font. I wondered: How can these two men possibly educate and enlighten women on their sex appeal and bodies? Well, they certainly gave it a good shot. But not good enough.

The first paragraph states that ?American males, it has been calculated, spend some $3 billion a year to gaze at women with hourglass figures, those whose small waists blossom into sinuously curvy hips.?

My first thought? Where does this ?calculation? come from? Furthermore, how does gazing at women connect to ?$3 billion a year?? They don?t explain this. Maybe men take time off work to gawk at women? Unlikely.

I have to give credit where credit is due: They do include research done by the late Deborah Sing ? 20 years ago. This is the only mention of a female contribution to the piece and does not extend past one measly paragraph which tells the eager reader: ?. . .Men all around the world. . .Prefer a similar shape.?

We are then told that when men view a curvy woman their brains respond in a similar fashion to cocaine and heroin. Hmm. That?s a strange statement with no research provided to the reader.

Even so, the following paragraph takes the cake:

Even a thin woman carries an astonishing amount of fat in her legs and hips?about a third of her body weight. Men everywhere admire the fat located here. . .Only bears ready to hibernate, penguins facing a sunless winter without food, or whales swimming in the arctic waters have fat percentages that approach those in normal, healthy, trim young women.

Well, that?s lovely! Female readers have now been compared to bears, penguins and whales. Furthermore, the word ?astonishing? used in relation to our apparent ?fat? probably does not make us smile. I am currently grimacing.

For diversity?s sake (or perhaps the editor was concerned about backlash from readers) a few paragraphs are devoted to explaining that American women are in dire need of more omega-3s.

Unfortunately, I believe more women have read this article than men. The pages are laced with bright pink script. I kid you not. Literature like this confuses both genders and, in my humble and currently sarcastic opinion, the size of my hips does not make me ?wise.? And neither did reading this article.

Loving Life: SRC Recipe: Crockpot Corned Beef and Cabbage

Whoop whoop...it's time...it's time for the Secret Recipe Club Group D reveal. The Secret Recipe Club is a great group where each month we are assigned a "Secret" blog where we excitedly choose a recipe and then on our reveal date we share our recipes. My favorite part in the reveal is trying to guess who had my blog and seeing what they chose.?

I was so excited when I chose the recipe for my SRC Assignment. I actually have had this particular blog before. In September of 2012 I made this recipe from her blog. Emily's blog Life on food?is a great blog. Please take time to read her About me page.?It's great. She's quite an adventurous girl.

The recipe I chose was her Crockpot Corned Beef and Cabbage?. I have been craving Corned Beef and Cabbage for awhile now and so when I saw that she had a recipe for it, I thought "why not make this one." I was a bit nervous. I grew up eating corned beef, but have never made it myself. I had been googling recipes prior to this assignment so I combined a few ideas.?

Today is St. Patrick's Day (well, the day I'm writing this post) so I knew it was the perfect day to try this. Yah, it would have been nice had I thought about the fact that it takes longer than 8 hours to cook in a crockpot and I was making this on a Sunday morning with plans to eat lunch by 1:30. You do the math. But there was no turning back. I had invited company over. So I went for it. The end result was a great, tender dinner.?

The funny thing is, the recipe calls for beer. I don't drink anything alcohol so had no clue what to look for. I FB messaged a friend of mine for advice, then went to the store and stared dumbly at all the options. Yikes! I also ?opted to NOT buy an inexpensive brand of corned beef but instead chose to buy from our local Chucks Produce and Street Market. We are on a continual journey of healthier more aware eating and I wanted to know what we were eating. I purchased a brisket that is from a local farm (Oregon) called Painted Hills Beef. It was WAY more, but WAY worth it.?

Last night I prepped the onions and carrots, placed them in plastic bags to dump in the crockpot in the morning. Went to bed, set the alarm for 4:50 and couldn't fall asleep! Grr...but I survived and dinner was ready to go by 1:45. I even made Irish Soda Bread from Miz Helen's Country Cottage. She posted this recipe on last weeks reveal! I went all out! Yay!
Okay, enough of the babble...sorry, I'm tired. On with the recipe. I am putting Emily's ingredients with my additions in italics. I will post my instructions, so please click the above link to see her instructions. They don't differ much except for the order in which I added things to the crockpot. I know my crockpot and it cooks hot so I didn't add the veggies right away. Also, my corned beef didn't have a packet, but the seasonings were in with the beef so I didn't rinse it, but now thinking I should have because they were too strong for everyone.?
Crock Pot Corned Beef and Cabbage
Adapted from Life on Food

Ingredients:

4 carrots peeled (I used a few more because there were 6 of us)
1 medium onion cut in to wedges
1 clove garlic (my addition)
4-6 red potatoes, quartered or halved depending on size
1 4lb corned beef brisket (mine was almost 3lbs.)
12 oz. Stout or Dark Ale (I used 8 oz. and 3 c. of water)
2 Tbs. sugar
2 Tbs. Vinegar
1 Tbs. Corned Beef spices or spice packet that comes with your corned beef
1 medium head of cabbage cut in wedges
Instructions:

1. Place onion and garlic in bottom of crockpot. Top with Corned Beef.

check out those spices...WOW! But I seriously should have left them out of the cooking process...it's not fun to pick them out.

2. Combine beer, water, vinegar and sugar. Stir and pour over beef.?

3. Cook on low for 4 hours.?

4. Add Carrots and Potatoes to the top of beef. Cook another 4 hours or so.?
5. At the end, remove meat and veggies, cover with foil to keep warm. Add chopped cabbage to the liquid, cooking on high till it reaches desired consistency. Mine took about 20 minutes or so.?
*Notes: After I removed the meat, potatoes and carrots, I added some saurkraut to the top, and covered it with foil to keep warm, even put it in the oven for a few minutes.

I also cooked it for 4 hours on low and 4 hours on high because I didn't really have 9-10 hours for total cooking time. It came out perfectly moist and the veggies were just right.?

And again, I would have personally rinsed the beef off and NOT added anymore spices. I think the fact that this brisket sat in the spices in the package seasoned it enough.

Well, that's about it. Mark this recipe to make next St. Patty's Day, or before. ?

With Joy UNquenchable,

Dr. Josef Olmert: Obama, Turkey and Israel -- More Than Meets the Eye

President Obama's visit in Israel was a resounding PR success, judging by various indicators of Israeli public opinion, but as the dust settles, it becomes very clear that the visit was also an impressive diplomatic achievement. All the president's men can feel satisfied by the decision of PM Netanyahu to terminate the crisis with Turkey, caused by the initial provocation of an Islamic organization and the disproportionate Israeli reaction, leading to the death of nine Islamic radicals.

The apology was long overdue, but better late than never. This blog called on the PM on September 21, 2012 to do just that, bearing in mind the overall strategic interest of Israel, particularly with regard to the deteriorating Syrian situation and its potential damaging implications.

Netanyahu, to his credit, chose his timing to do that -- the Obama visit -- thus responding to a long-held American expectation from Israel, providing the president with the ability to show actual positive results for the visit. Netanyahu acted in a way which is typical for Israeli governments, though not necessarily to his own, and that is to do what is in the best interest of Israel, but to present it as a gesture towards the U.S.

There are those who argue that he could and should do more of the kind also in the past, and in this way prevent some of the tensions which have become an all too familiar and undesirable feature of the relations between him and President Obama. Yet, what he did was gutsy, considering the Israeli political environment, and the deep-seated resistance there to admit any wrongdoing on the part of the IDF, which rightly continues to be revered by the vast majority of the Israeli people.

PM Erdoghan of Turkey has made his own political calculus, chief among them the fact that the enmity towards Israel being so much in display after the tragic Mavi Marmara incident, did not really pay dividends to Turkey -- not in the U.S., not in the E.U., not even in the Arab world. Erdoghan learned that the Arabs are much more preoccupied with the implications of the Arab Spring, in particular the Syrian situation. The Turkish leader realized, while not admitting in public, that there still is a volume of Arab suspicions towards the Turks, a legacy of the centuries of Ottoman rule.

Whatever is the reason, the Turkish PM demonstrated yet again that he possesses qualities of real leadership, among them the ability to sense an opportunity for a change of diplomatic course and take advantage of it.

He is engaged now in a PR campaign in Turkey, designed to maximize the effects of what is presented as an Israeli defeat, whereas PM Netanyahu is engaged in his own campaign, designed to minimize the domestic ill effects of the apology, which for so long he regarded as a non-starter. But, it is in Washington where the White House can really claim a big victory. Two of the U.S.' main regional allies were at each other's throats, not a good situation for the U.S., particularly at a time of major regional instability, exactly the type of situation which requires closing of the ranks among the U.S. allies. The Administration was often criticized for what seemed to be a "come from behind" policy, leading to a considerable diminution of the U.S.' stature in the region.

Well, not so fast. The U.S. proved again that it is the only power capable of bringing hostile parties together, and doing that in a patient way and exactly at the right time. And timing, as Winston Churchill once said, is 50 % of good diplomacy. Here is where the public announcements of the Americans, Turks and Israelis may give just part of the picture. The Israelis were more open to the former two, acknowledging in public that it was the situation in Syria which led to an Israeli adjustment, and made the apology inevitable. Turkish commentators are suggesting likewise, that Erdoghan's main priority now is Syria, and certain moves by the Obama administration indicate that also the U.S. view the situation in Syria as a regional time bomb that needs to be dealt with and now, rather than on an unspecified date in the future. So is also the position of King Abdallah of Jordan, another valued American ally. The Saudis have already shown for a long while, that they want to see Bashar Assad out, and the soonest the best.

So, now, with the Israeli-Turkish rapprochement, the U.S. can finally cement a strategy about Syria, which can and will be supported by all its regional allies. Not good news for Bashar Assad, whose whereabouts are shredded with growing mystery. Yesterday there was buzz on Arabic Internet sites, according to which the besieged president was critically wounded in an attempt on his life.

The Al Shami hospital in Damascus was under siege, but as yet, these are unconfirmed reports. But the end is near and the regional implications could be devastating, clearly a potential nightmare for the U.S. and its allies. This is why the U.S. needed the Israelis and Turks to reconcile. The bad guys, the Iranians, so aware of their impending likely debacle once Assad is out, were quick to denounce the Israeli-Turkish new deal as another American machination, aimed at Syria.

Put aside their terminology, they may not be wrong. It is indeed the case, that the Syrian situation requires a coordinated American-led action. President Obama's visit and diplomacy seem to have done exactly that.

Kurdish rebels declare formal ceasefire with Turkey

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - The Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militant group declared a "formal and clear ceasefire" with Turkey on Saturday after the rebels' jailed leader this week ordered a halt to the decades-long armed campaign for autonomy.

"Since March 21 and from now on, we as a movement, as the PKK ... officially and clearly declare a ceasefire," said Murat Karayilan, the PKK's field commander, in a video message apparently taped at a rebel holdout in northern Iraq.

His comments were translated from Kurdish in the video posted on Firat News, a website with links to the militants.

Abdullah Ocalan, held in an island prison since his 1999 conviction for treason, called on the PKK to cease fire and withdraw from Turkey in a letter read to hundreds of thousands of supporters in the main Kurdish city of Diyarbakir on March 21, the Kurds' traditional new year holiday.

Ocalan, called Apo for short, has been in negotiations with state officials from his prison cell since October to end the conflict that has claimed 40,000 lives since it began in 1984.

"The decision by our leader Apo is all of ours. We accept this decision, we agree with it," Karayilan said in the video, flanked by female and male fighters dressed in baggy green fatigues.

"We see it as historic, correct and very important and as the start of a new period."

Karayilan said his rebels would complete a withdrawal if the government and parliament "fulfilled their responsibilities and created the foundation for a withdrawal," without elaborating further.

The declaration from Karayilan, who is based in the remote mountains of northern Iraq from where he directs the PKK insurgency against Turkey, had been expected but was still an important sign the outlawed PKK will abide by Ocalan's orders.

Despite his 14 years in captivity, Ocalan still wields enormous clout over PKK militants as well as millions of nationalist Kurds.

RISKS

However, there are still dangers of division over the terms of a peace deal or between the figures negotiating it. The process could also be complicated by the ambitions of other Kurdish groups across the border in Syria, Iran and Iraq.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has taken a considerable political risk in allowing negotiations with Ocalan to unfold in such a public way. Previous efforts conducted behind closed doors over the decades to resolve the conflict have all failed.

Ocalan is reviled by many Turks for leading an insurgency that threatened to partition Turkey in its earlier days.

The government has agreed on a commission of "wise men" to facilitate the peace process, Turkish media reported on Saturday.

The commission will consist of 30 well-known figures including writers Yashar Kemal and Hasan Cemal to ensure the process runs smoothly and has public support, NTV news channel said.

Kurds, who make up about 20 percent of Turkey's population of 75 million people, want greater cultural and political rights.

Many say they do not see their future in an independent Kurdistan but in Turkey, the world's 18th-biggest economy and a candidate for European Union membership.

The United States and the EU, along with NATO member Turkey, consider the PKK a terrorist organization.

Hey guys, im trying to use a my.setting setting as an object (I hope thats correct). What I want is to use it, like this:

Dim mysetting As Object = My.Settings.setting 'Now, the setting will be changed to something like Form1.Button1 'And I want to use mysetting instead of form1.Button1, like; mysetting.Backgroundimage.fromfile ("C:\Users\Admin\Pictures\pic1.png")

This doesn't work, sadly. So im wondering if its possible, because it would cut my code down by quite a few lines.

    Thanks in advance

    .Aidan

Why not store all the object properties as an XML string and then store that string in the my.settings? Then, when you need it, you can pop out the XML, cycle through the nodes, and create the object?

    Well, 3 reasons

    1. I have no idea what you're talking about cause im a newb
    2. I have no idea what you're talking about cause im a newb
    3. I have no idea what you're talking about cause im a newb

But im sure my method would work with a bit of tweaking.

GUI objects are quite big.. but if you must - drill down the 'type' to 'browse'.. then drill down to the windows forms until you find the GUI control you want and there you go.

Typically my objects are all types across the board so I just save their important bits in XML and then save that XML string in the my.settings under 'string'.
