JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- First Coast News reports a plane bound for Norfolk skidded off the runway and into a wooded area near Naval Air Station Jacksonville late Saturday afternoon.
None of the 167 passengers were on board and no military property was damaged, according to
Miriam Gallet, Public Affairs Officer for NAS Jacksonville.
The Boeing 737 Delta Airline charter flight number 8957 departed from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and stopped at NAS Jacksonville en route to Norfolk.
Delta's Web site shows the plane was to land at Naval Air Station Norfolk, then head to Norfolk International Airport.
Delta issued the following statement through spokeswoman Lindsay McDuff:
Delta charter flight 8957, being flown for the U.S. Military, left the runway upon landing at Jacksonville Naval Air Station. No injuries were reported and customers are being transported to Jacksonville International Airport where they have been accommodated on another aircraft to continue their travel. Delta is investigating the episode and apologizes for the inconvenience.
The landing incident is under investigation.
Gallet said the cause of the crash is unknown.
The National Transportation Safety Board will handle the investigation solo and the FAA and the Navy won't be involved, according to Gallet.
The NTSB is investigating since it is a civilian airline.
