Slime molds could hold key to new kinds of intelligence, help Statue of Liberty walk

See that yellow amoeboid slime mold? It's up to something. A team of Japanese scientists at Future University Hakodate led by professor Toshiyuki Nakagaki has found evidence that physarum polycephalum -- or grape-cluster slime -- are capable of navigating mazes and can organize their cells to find the most direct route. Nakagaki and others believe this could be the key to designing bio-computers capable of solving complex problems. According to Nakagaki, the slime's cells appear to have a kind of information-processing ability that allows them to "optimize" the route along which the mold grows to reach food while avoiding stresses -- like light -- that may damage them.

Over at Kyushu University, researcher Atsushi Tero told the AFP news agency: "Computers are not so good at analysing the best routes that connect many base points because the volume of calculations becomes too large for them. But slime molds, without calculating all the possible options, can flow over areas in an impromptu manner and gradually find the best routes." Tero and other researchers have expressed hope that slime mold networks could be used in future designs of new transportation systems, electric transmission lines and understanding the human nervous system. Just remember, if you're going to coat the interior of the Statue of Liberty with some pink slime you found in the sewer, make sure you play some upbeat music to go along with it. It's just a good idea in the long run.

PFT: Tebow's fumbling is a growing problem

Buffalo Bills v Miami DolphinsGetty Images

As Bills receiver Stevie Johnson approaches the final 60 minutes of his rookie contract, the question of whether he?ll remain with the team soon will become an even hotter topic in one of the league?s coldest climates.

Joe Buscaglia of WGR radio in Buffalo reports that Johnson asked for a contract worth $7.5 million per year during negotiations with the team.? Per Buscaglia, the Bills have made no offers during the past month.

In September, Buscaglia reported that the two sides were more than $2 million apart annually.

If the Bills and Johnson can?t work out a contract by late February, the Bills will have to decide whether to use the franchise tag to limit his mobility.? But since that would entail giving Johnson a one-year, guaranteed salary of roughly $9.5 million, the Bills likely are reluctant to make that kind of a commitment, given their apparent reluctance to pay him $7.5 million per year on a long-term deal.

Agent C.J. Laboy commented on the situation with Sal Capaccio of WGR.? ?We were approached to do a deal prior to the season starting,? Laboy said.? ?When it became clear that the two sides were too far apart, we agreed that it would be best to shelve negotiations and allow Stevie to focus on the season.? Stevie never wanted his contract status to be a distraction to him or his teammates.? At that time, the Bills turned their focus on getting [Ryan Fitzpatrick's] contract done, which they ultimately did.? A week or so after Ryan?s deal was done, the Bills wanted to re-open negotiations, but when it quickly became apparent that we wouldn?t be able to get a deal done, Stevie decided that it was best to wait until the end of the year before talking about his contract again.?

And Laboy seemed to confirm the range of Johnson?s expectations.? ?Stevie was more than willing to do a discounted deal with the Bills because of his loyalty to the organization for giving him his chance in the NFL, his loyalty to his teammates, and his love for the city of Buffalo,? Laboy said.? ?Any reports of Stevie asking for 10, 9, or even 8 million dollars a year are completely false and misleading.?

Ultimately, Johnson may have to test the market in order to determine whether someone else will offer more than what the Bills have offered, and whether Johnson is willing to leave Buffalo.

Through 15 games, Johnson has 964 yard receiving, 109 yards short of his career high in 2010.? He also has 72 catches and six touchdowns; last year, he caught 82 passes and 10 touchdowns.

But untimely drops continue to plague Johnson.? Last year, he had a game-winning score in his hands against the Steelers, but somehow dropped it.? Earlier this season against the Jets, he dropped another pass that could have delivered a win over the Jets.

Still, Johnson possesses the kind of name recognition that could prompt a receiver-needy team to overpay for his services on the first day of free agency, in order to generate offseason excitement and headlines ? and to sell tickets and jerseys.

Mexico Versus China Logistics Costs Topic of Offshore Group Podcast

????TUCSON, AZ, December 28, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Offshore Group has made the latest installation in its ongoing series of podcasts on Mexico business topics available on its website.

The session is entitled "Logistics Costs: Mexico versus China," and focuses on the comparative costs of shipping to and from Mexico from the United States, as well as doing the same with respect to China. Bill Golden, president of The Offshore Group's International Logistic Solutions Company (ILS), lends some perspective on the subject matter prior to his retirement from a career spanning a 46 year period in manufacturing and logistics.

During the approximately 30 minute discussion, Golden points out the many complexities related to a supply chain that extends thousands of miles, while pointing out the cost and risk benefits of "shortening the pipeline." According to Golden, "Manufacturing is trending towards regionalization. Instead of continuing their production in the Far East to serve the U.S., and the entire North American, market, companies are increasingly moving their production back closer to the point of consumption."

Interested parties are invited to listen to this recording, as well as the others available on The Offshore Group's website.

International Logistics Solutions (ILS) is an Offshore Group Company, and offers a complete cross border supply chain management (SCM) solution. Its menu of third party logistics (3PL) services includes supply chain expertise, freight and raw materials management, finished goods distribution, as well as vendor managed inventory (VMI) and consignment.

The Offshore Group is the largest provider of outsourced business support, or "shelter" services in Mexico. Currently 61 businesses operate at The Offshore Group's three Mexico manufacturing industrial parks in the State of Sonora, the city of Saltillo, Coahuila, and at the Group's Vangtel subsidiary in Hermosillo. Vangtel offers Mexico shelter services to companies that occupy the call center, IT development and BPO markets, while the International Logistic Solutions Company (ILS) is a leading provider of supply chain services. The Offshore Group has recently initiated operations in Mexico's second largest city, Guadalajara. The Offshore Group has enabled companies to establish and maintain manufacturing facilities in Mexico at low cost and risk since 1986.

Canada overlooks a major market in western Japan

Don Cayo was the 2011 winner of a fellowship for Canadian journalists that is offered by the Foreign Press Centre of Japan. He travelled to Japan last month as their guest.

OSAKA, Japan

It?s hard to imagine that savvy Canadians, regardless of whether they work in government or in private enterprise, would be content to ignore the huge economic potential of a big international player like, say, the whole of South Korea or two-thirds of India.

Yet that?s the size of the opportunity that is all but slipping through Canada?s fingers in the Kansai region of western Japan. In any compilation of who?s who among international suppliers and customers doing business in this intensely productive part of the world, we Canadians don?t even rate a mention at the bottom of the list.

Yet, although this region may have only 0.3 per cent of Canada?s land area, it has well over half as many people and half the gross domestic product.

Kansai also punches above its weight among the other regions of Japan. Although it contains only about one-twelfth of the land area of the country, it is home to nearly 20 per cent of its universities and 21 per cent of its research institutes. Its thousands of companies specialize in two high-growth areas ? environmental technology and medical advances ? and the region is similarly strong in its track record for collaboration between researchers and businesses, and for filing patent applications. It?s also an active trader, more dependent for its prosperity on international suppliers and markets than on the substantial Japanese domestic market.

Canada is heavily engaged in trade with other regions of Japan. The country is B.C.?s second-largest trading partner, purchasing almost 14 per cent of our total exports. Until it was recently knocked into third place by fast-growing China, Japan was also the second-largest trading partner for Canada as a whole.

Yet Canadians? collective response to all this activity seems to be a yawn.

Although Premier Christy Clark has promised to try to make good with an official visit in the spring, those who pay attention to these things saw it as a snub that she over-flew Japan to go straight to China and India last month on her first, and so far only, trade mission trip.

But even if she had decided to stop in Japan, she wouldn?t have been able to conveniently land here. Because, while almost a hundred flights a week link Kansai International Airport to the United States and several hundred more fly in and out of other parts of the developed world, the former scheduled flights to Vancouver and Toronto have been scrubbed.

As well, the consulate Canada used to maintain in Osaka was closed several years ago and, although it was recently replaced with a less prestigious trade office, this appears to be so low profile that only one of the many business leaders interviewed for this series of stories on Japan seemed to know it existed.

When the people who were helping with logistics on this assignment sought to arrange an interview with Osaka?s Canadian Chamber of Commerce, they drew a blank and concluded that it was inactive.

Kansai is a long way ? almost as far as you can get and still be in Japan ? from the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami area, so it suffered no physical damage at all. Nor did its economy take much of a hit, says Noriko Mimura, manager of the investment promotion division of Kankeiran, a federation of Kansai regional companies. Aside from a brief blip caused by disruptions of the supply chain from factories in the east that were damaged or washed away, production in this region barely faltered.

However, nor did Kansai get the economic boost it expected as a result of a shift of production from the devastated east to the untouched west, says Katushiro Miyamoto, a professor at the graduate school of economics at Kansai University.

Initially after the quake, quite a few businesses were gearing up to bolster their operations here, Miyamoto said, but the reality of power supply problems set in ?and people realized there is no point shifting production to Kansai region.?

The power issue stems not from nuclear plant damage, but from the reluctance of local governments, who?ve been spooked by the damage at Fukushima from the tsunami, to allow them to continue producing. The problem is particularly acute in Kansai, because the region is even more dependent on reactors than is the rest of Japan. Fully half the power here was nuclear-generated, compared to about 30 per cent nationwide, so the impact of legislated conservation measures was felt more keenly by industries here.

Canada is too late into the game to compete as a supplier of liquid natural gas to meet the short- or even medium-term demand in Kansai for a buffer to produce energy while the future of nuclear is being decided and other sources of supply are being developed. We have a lot of gas, but no way to get it to the Japanese market before 2015, when the nation?s first LNG terminal is expected to open in Kitimat.

China arrests suspect in murder that inspired film (AP)

BEIJING ? Chinese police have arrested a suspect in the murder of an official 17 years ago that became the basis of a popular film about Tibetan antelope poaching

Ranger and government official Sonam Dargye was killed during a gunfight with poachers as he tried to protect endangered antelopes in western China in 1994.

Dargye's murder on the sparsely populated Qinghai-Tibet plateau inspired the 2004 film "Mountain Patrol" by Chinese director Lu Chuan. It also drew attention to the Tibetan antelope, which became endangered after being hunted for its wool that is used to make luxury shahtoosh shawls.

The official Xinhua News Agency said Tuesday that a suspect in the group that allegedly shot Dargye was arrested in Qinghai province Sunday after six others surrendered.

Cheetah the chimp from 1930s Tarzan flicks dies (AP)

PALM HARBOR, Fla. ? A Florida animal sanctuary says Cheetah the chimpanzee sidekick in the Tarzan movies of the early 1930s has died at age 80.

The Suncoast Primate Sanctuary in Palm Harbor announced that Cheetah died Dec. 24 of kidney failure.

Sanctuary outreach director Debbie Cobb on Wednesday told The Tampa Tribune ( http://bit.ly/rRuTeJ) that Cheetah was outgoing, loved finger painting and liked to see people laugh. She says he seemed to be tuned into human feelings.

Based on the works of author Edgar Rice Burroughs, the Tarzan stories, which have spawned scores of books and films over the years, chronicle the adventures of a man who was raised by apes in Africa.

Cheetah was the comic relief in the Tarzan films that starred American Olympic gold medal swimmer Johnny Weissmuller. Cobb says Cheetah came to the sanctuary from Weissmuller's estate sometime around 1960.

Cobb says Cheetah wasn't a troublemaker. Still, sanctuary volunteer Ron Priest says that when the chimp didn't like what was going on, he would throw feces.

(AP) ? Watch the political advertising and Elizabeth Warren, the leading Democratic Senate candidate in Massachusetts, either "sides with extreme left" protesters or has a history of being too cozy with Wall Street. Or Republican freshman Sen. Scott Brown, whom she hopes to defeat next year, is portrayed as an enemy of the environment.

Outside groups on both sides are spending millions of dollars on the race, highlighting the national prominence of the fight over the seat held for nearly 50 years by the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy. But the level of spending also foreshadows the role that such groups, including special political action committees, will play in many of next fall's big political matchups.

The flood of money and ads from outside the state is expected to surge as the Warren-Brown race intensifies.

"Massachusetts is at the end of the spear of what will be the big trend and the big story of 2012," said Ken Goldstein, president of Campaign Media Analysis Group, which tracks spending on political ads.

Super PACs have been showing their strength in marquis Senate races. The Supreme Court, in a trio of decisions capped by the landmark Citizens United case in 2010, eased restrictions on the use of corporate money in political campaigns and paved the way for such spending. Massachusetts is front and center, with the conservative Crossroads GPS spending $1.1 million on one spot casting Warren as aligned with radical elements of the Occupy Wall Street movement and another that has her siding with Wall Street bankers.

Crossroads GPS is an affiliate of American Crossroads, a group with ties to Karl Rove, a top political adviser to President George W. Bush. The groups spent more than $38 million to defeat Democrats in the 2010 midterms, raising money from large donors, including many whose identities remain unknown.

Crossroads GPS was by far the largest and most influential super PAC in that campaign year.

Last month, one Crossroads ad used spliced images of Warren with rowdy Occupy Wall Street protesters to claim that she "sides with extreme left" protesters who "attack police, do drugs and trash public parks."

Warren at one point said her philosophies provided the intellectual underpinnings for the Occupy movement, but she has backed off a bit, saying she supports the movement but that the protesters must follow the law.

A second Crossroads ad then painted Warren as being too cozy with Wall Street when she headed a congressional panel that oversaw the Treasury's handling of the $700 billion financial industry bailout, a charge Warren has dismissed as ridiculous given her background as a consumer advocate and leading critic of many Wall Street's practices.

The attacks prompted Warren to spend about $1 million on her first TV campaign ad, in which she says: "Before you hear a bunch of ridiculous attack ads, I want to tell you who I am."

Warren is an especially inviting target for Republicans because many voters don't know much about her, which Anthony Corrado, a campaign finance expert at Colby College in Maine, said explains why these groups have become active at such an early stage of the campaign.

"The first information can often have a powerful influence," he said.

Outside groups have also gone after Brown.

The League of Conservation Voters and the League of Women Voters have spent nearly $3 million on separate ad campaigns accusing Brown of casting anti-environmental votes. Both groups have also run ads against Democrats in other states.

The League of Women Voters' ad rapped Brown for voting with other Senate Republicans to ban the Environmental Protection Agency from controlling gases blamed for global warming. It showed a child breathing through an oxygen mask and urged Brown to "protect the people and not the polluters." Brown complained that the ad was "political demagoguery."

One spot by the League of Conservation Voters slammed Brown for siding with "big oil" and voting "repeatedly against protecting our environment and public health." He has denounced that ad as a distortion.

The League of Conservation Voters said Brown scored a zero on the group's national environmental report card.

The early wave of attack ads has hurt both candidates, a recent University of Massachusetts-Lowell/Boston Herald poll found. The percentage of voters who said they had an unfavorable view of Brown rose from 29 percent to 35 percent between late September and early December. Those viewing Warren unfavorably increased from 18 percent to 27 percent.

Brown wants third-party groups to pull their negative commercials. Warren draws the line at unfair attack ads but defends the rights of political action committees and other independent groups to run ads.

Such talk won't stop outside groups from swarming the airwaves with negative ads, however.

"This is just a harbinger of things to come," said Corrado.

Four-alarm fire gutted historic Watsonville building: Apple Growers Ice & Cold Storage loss called 'end of an era'

EDITOR'S NOTE: During the final two weeks of 2011, the Sentinel is taking a look back at the most newsworthy stories and newsmakers of the year. The series will be published in ascending order, ending on Jan. 1 with the story selected by the Sentinel staff as the year's biggest.

WATSONVILLE ? When Stephanie Phillips first smelled smoke about 3:30 p.m. April 20, she thought it would probably turn out to be nothing, or at least of little consequence.

Then, as firefighters tackled flames rising from the historic warehouse on West Beach Street, she decided to wait and watch while they extinguished the blaze.

But it took three days and dozens of firefighters from several counties to put out Watsonville's most significant fire in years. By then, the Apple Growers Ice & Cold Storage warehouse was gutted, a $10 million loss to the structure and its contents, mostly Martinelli's apple cider.

Phillips, Apple Growers manager, said she never would have guessed her world would be upended on what had been a typical Wednesday afternoon.

?It just seems like this is the end of an era,? Phillips said earlier this month as she presided over what looks to be the final chapter in a business that dates to the late 1920s and symbolizes a time when apples formed the Pajaro Valley's economic foundation.

?This place has been here for so long,? she said. ?It's sad.?

Cork and redwood insulation

tarred to the concrete walls of the warehouse fueled what was later ruled an accidental fire sparked by roofers. Pallets of apple juice stacked high and close prevented firefighters from working the blaze from the inside, and due to the age of the building, there were no sprinklers.

That first night, concern about the potential for a toxic ammonia leak from refrigeration pipes and deteriorating air quality due to smoke led to emergency warning calls to 28,000 phone customers within a three-mile radius. Hundreds of fish died in nearby Watsonville Slough as soot and foam poured into the water.

At its peak, 16 engines, three ladder trucks and 80 firefighters battled the four-alarm fire.

Watsonville Fire Chief Mark Bisbee said the burn time, the number of firefighters involved, and the impact on habitat and air quality all made Apple Growers a consequential fire ?not just for Watsonville, but probably for the (San Francisco) Bay Area.?

The fire cost $227,000 to fight. Watsonville spent nearly $40,000, and the rest had to be absorbed by the agencies providing mutual aid.

S. Martinelli & Co., a Watsonville business with a global reach, lost more than $3 million in apple juice and cider. More would have gone up in flames if not for the efforts of company forklift drivers, who raced ahead of the fire to save a quarter of the stored product.

John Martinelli, president of the 143-year-old family-owned company, said insurance covered the loss, but product was in short supply for several months. Not until early December was inventory back on track, he said.

Martinelli solved a potential storage problem for this year's apple crop ? held in past years at Apple Growers until processing it into cider ? with the purchase of a long vacant frozen food plant.

But the loss that really hurts is the disappearance of a piece of the past, he said. The heirs of the 23 Croatian apple growers, who built the cold storage business in 1928 to store their produce, have decided not to rebuild and the 3.5-acre property is for sale.

The business stood the test of time, though.

Over the years, apples, vegetables, strawberries and nursery stock chilled within its walls. It had become less profitable in recent years, according to the late Steve Zupan, who served as company president until his death in August. But it was still in use. As late as December, undamaged portions of the 78,000-square-foot building held onions grown in Hollister.

?It's tragic,? Martinelli said. ?It's an icon. The facade of that building is such a big part of Watsonville and Watsonville history and especially the apple industry.?

For Phillips, the loss is personal. She's worked at Apple Growers for more than 20 years. Asked what she'll do when the building is sold, she shrugged.

?I don't know,? she said. ?I'll stay until they kick me out.?

Ex-White House hopeful Edwards seeks to delay trial (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Lawyers for former presidential hopeful John Edwards on Thursday asked for a two-month postponement of his trial over allegations he broke campaign finance laws to hide an extramarital affair, citing in part an undisclosed "medical issue."

Edwards has pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy, taking illegal campaign contributions and making false statements in a bid to keep the affair secret. The trial is due to start late next month.

His lawyers asked for the delay because of the medical matter and provided details in a document filed under seal in a federal court in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Edwards "has unexpectedly encountered a medical issue which makes the trial of this case in the January 2012 criminal term extraordinarily difficult," his lawyers told the court. "This medical issue cannot be resolved before the end of the January 2012 criminal term."

Edwards, a former U.S. senator from North Carolina and John Kerry's vice presidential running mate in 2004, did not show any outward signs of illness during a court hearing last week.

The lawyers also argued that the case was particularly complex and they needed more time to prepare for trial.

At issue is the more than $900,000 prosecutors said was provided by two wealthy supporters to help Edwards cover up the affair and a child conceived with his former campaign videographer during his failed bid for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.

Edwards initially denied having the liaison with Rielle Hunter or paying her any money. The indictment said the supporters gave money to an Edwards aide to pay for Hunter's medical visits, prenatal care, rent, car, air travel and other living expenses.

Edwards faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine on each count if convicted.

Justice to require sale before NYSE merger (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Justice Department announced Thursday that it will allow the creation of the world's largest stock exchange operator after the German conglomerate that wants to buy the New York Stock Exchange sells its stake in a third, smaller American stock exchange operator.

Justice Department lawyers filed papers in U.S. District Court in Washington that would allow the merger of NYSE Euronext and Deutsche Boerse AG after the German company orders one of its subsidiaries to sell its 31.5 percent stake in Direct Edge Holdings LLC, which is the United States' fourth largest stock exchange operator. In addition to the sale of Direct Edge, the proposed settlement between Justice and the two companies prohibits them from participating in the business or running of Direct Edge.

The German company, which operates the Frankfurt stock exchange, offered to buy NYSE Euronext for $10 billion in February. The transaction would create the world's largest exchange operator. NYSE Euronext owns exchanges in Paris, Lisbon, Brussels and Amsterdam, in addition to New York.

"Without the divestiture and other restrictions obtained by the Justice Department, a combined NYSE and Deutsche Borse entity could influence the actions of Direct Edge, and thereby lessen the zeal of an aggressive and innovative exchange competitor," said Sharis A. Pozen, acting assistant attorney general in charge of the Justice Department's Antitrust Division. "The remedy ensures that participants in the markets for U.S. equities exchange products and services will continue to receive the full benefits of robust competition in the form of competitive prices and increased innovation."

Under the terms of the settlement, Deutsche Borse's subsidiary, ISE, will divest itself of its interest in Direct Edge within two years.

The Deutsche Boerse-NYSE Eurostar merger would not only control important stock markets on both sides of the Atlantic, but also have a potentially dominant position in the trading of derivatives. Derivatives are complex financial products that allow investors to bet on movements in areas such as interest rates, stock indexes or commodity prices.

The combination of the two exchanges has been harshly criticized by competitors like the London Stock Exchange and U.S.-based Nasdaq.

New S. Korea coach less than thrilled about job

By JOHN DUERDEN

updated 9:10 p.m. ET Dec. 22, 2011

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -There were no mentions of dreams fulfilled or patriotic honor when Choi Kang-hee reluctantly accepted the job as South Korea's new national team coach.

Rarely has a man entrusted with such a position looked less excited to be given the chance to lead his country to the World Cup. In his first press conference in his new role on Thursday, Choi looked like he had been dragged into the hot seat.

He was content coaching Jeonbuk Motors in the mid-sized provincial city of Jeonju in Korea's rural southwest, but now the taciturn tactician is charged with the task of leading an expectant nation to Brazil in 2014 and an eighth successive appearance on the global stage.

Choi, 52, was the longest serving club coach in the domestic K-league, and since 2005 had slowly turned Jeonbuk into the best team in the country and one of the best in Asia. The former international player led the Motors to the 2006 Asian Champions League title and the final of the 2011 version, when the team dominated the match against Al Sadd of Qatar only to lose after a penalty shootout.

Four days after Choi lifted the K-League trophy for the second time with the club on December 4, the Korea Football Association fired Cho Kwang-rae in the wake of a shocking 2-1 defeat away to Lebanon.

Even before Cho's dismissal, the KFA contacted Choi to offer him the job. He refused, the first of a number of times he turned down advances from the association.

"Even a week ago, I didn't even think one percent that I would be here," Choi said on Thursday. "I had promised the fans and players of Jeonbuk that I would sign a new contract with the club. I changed my mind as I felt the national team is in a serious crisis."

Choi had earlier left a lengthy message on Jeonbuk's home page promising fans that it was not a goodbye but a see-you-later and was at pains to point out that he was not a long-term appointment.

"My contract will be until June 2013, and then I hope to return to my club," he said. "For the sake of the national team, Korea should find an experienced foreign manager."

Choi's words contradicted those of KFA executive director Kim Jin-kook who earlier told reporters that if the new coach took the team through qualification, he would stay on for another year.

Such a contradiction capped a confusing two weeks during which damaged the KFA's reputation.

The decision to appoint the reluctant Choi was described by sections of the local media as yet another example of the powerful national association riding roughshod over the domestic league.

Fans internet forums have debated the Hyundai connection. Many of the top-ranked KFA executives have backgrounds with the conglomerate; Hyundai also sponsors the league and owns Jeonbuk Motors, Choi's employer.

KFA president Cho Chung-yeon has taken a back seat in the whole affair and allowed Hwangbo Kwan, the newly appointed chairman of the technical committee which oversees all national team affairs, to do the explaining.

After his dismissal, Cho Kwang-rae, appointed in July 2010, accused Hwangbo of not following the proper procedures.

"The technical committee is the core of designing the future of Korean football, and I'm completely disappointed about the way that the KFA suddenly notifies the manager of his dismissal," he said.

"The committee thus is not the division only existing to select and to dismiss managers; it's the part that can decide the next century of the sport, and the committee must be autonomous without being affected from outside."

Cho repeated the views of many in the country when he suggested that Hwangbo was merely acting on behalf of superiors was preferred to stay in the background. A widely circulated cartoon had KFA president Cho Chung-yeon operating Hwangbo as a string puppet.

"I doubt whether the chief of the committee exercised his authority independently; and wonder if some high football officials or other powerful groups outside football made the decision," said Cho Kwang-rae.

Despite the criticism, the KFA is delighted to have finally lured the leading domestic coach, and while Choi's tenure may not be a long one, the association is confident that it will last longer than one vital upcoming game.

South Korea hosts Kuwait on February 29 in Seoul. Defeat in that match and the 2002 World Cup semifinalists could be eliminated from Asian qualification at the penultimate round. A draw will seal a place in the final stage of qualification.

After appearances in every World Cup since 1986, the nation expects no less.

Some nearby young stars may be much older than previously thought

Wednesday, December 21, 2011

Low in the south in the summer sky shines the constellation Scorpius and the bright, red supergiant star Antares. Many of the brightest stars in Scorpius, and hundreds of its fainter stars, are among the youngest stars found near the earth, and a new analysis of them may result in a rethinking of both their ages and the ages of other groups of stars.

New research by astrophysicists from the University of Rochester focused on stars in the north part of the constellation, known as Upper Scorpius, which is a part of the Scorpius-Centaurus OB association, one of our best studied groups of young stars and a benchmark sample for investigating the early lives of stars and the evolution of their planet-spawning disks. The Upper Scorpius stellar group lies roughly 470 light years from Earth.

While those stars have been thought to be just five million years old, the team concludes that those stars are actually more than twice as old, at 11 million years of age. The findings are surprising given Upper Scorpius's status as one of the best-studied samples of young stars in the sky.

The findings by graduate student Mark Pecaut and Assistant Professor Eric Mamajek of Rochester, and Assistant Professor Eric Bubar of Marymount University, were accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal.

The scientists came to their conclusions after analyzing hundreds of optical spectra measured with the SMARTS 1.5-meter telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO) in Chile, as well as reanalyzing previously published data on the stars.

"We combined our new estimates for the temperatures of the stars based on our spectra, with data on the brightnesses and distances to estimate accurate luminosities," said Pecaut. "Then we used state-of-the-art stellar evolution models to determine the ages."

While similar methods were used in the past to calculate ages for some of the Upper Scorpius stars, Pecaut says no previous study has determined independent age estimates for members of the group over such a wide range of stellar masses. The new analysis shows that stars over a wide range of masses in Upper Scorpius ? from slightly more massive than our Sun, up to the mass of the bright star Antares (17 times the mass of our Sun) are giving ages consistent with a mean age of 11 million years.

"For one thing, the distances to the stars are now much more accurately known," said Pecaut. "Also, the newer computer models take into account the rotation of the stars and its effect on the mixing on the star's hydrogen ? its nuclear fuel source."

"The first criticism that we heard of the work was that our age estimates for the stars more massive than the Sun in Upper Scorpius disagreed drastically with previously published ages for the smaller stars in the group," said Mamajek. "However, we think the stellar parameters and models are on much firmer footing for the higher mass stars than for the lowest mass stars. The computer models of stars have trouble predicting the correct masses of low-mass stars when they are dynamically measureable, as well as the rate at which the low-mass stars consume their lithium through nuclear reactions. The situation is better for the high mass stars. So there is no reason to think that the ages for the smaller stars would be more accurate."

The results from Rochester have immediate implications for one recent discovery. In 2008, Canadian astronomers reported the discovery of the first imaged exoplanet orbiting a young Sun-like star ?identified as 1RXS J160929.1-210524b. The object and its host star are members of the Upper Scorpius group. If the age of the star is much older than first thought, then the "exoplanet" has been cooling off for a longer period of time and consequently has a greater mass. In this case, the predicted mass of the object goes from roughly 8 Jupiter masses to 14 Jupiter masses. Consequently, the object would not be considered an exoplanet by the discoverer's original definition, but a brown dwarf ? a so-called "failed star." However there is considerable uncertainty about the origins of the low-mass companions discovered circling some stars on wide orbits at hundreds of astronomical units, so the jury is still out on the nature of objects like 1RXS J1609b.

Pecaut says with more accurate estimates of the ages of stars, scientists can better understand how long it takes planets to form. For example, if 11-million-year-old stars do not have gas accreting around them, it means that gas-rich planets like Jupiter and Saturn would have to form in less than 11 million years.

Pecaut expects that the findings of the Rochester team will encourage scientists to reassess the ages of other star clusters. If it's determined that other stellar populations are systematically older than originally believed, then it may mean that the conditions for forming gas giant planets like Jupiter around young stars may typically persist for millions of years longer than previously thought.

"If a stellar group as well-studied as Upper Scorpius can be twice as old as previously believed, then all bets are off on the accuracy of the previously published ages for other similar groups of young stars," added Mamajek.

Mystery surrounds son set to succeed Kim Jong Il (AP)

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? With the sudden death of his father, Kim Jong Un went from being North Korea's "Respected General" to "Great Successor" ? a heady and uncertain promotion for a young man virtually unknown even to the North Korean people just a year ago.

Word of Kim Jong Il's death, announced Monday two days after he suffered a fatal heart attack, thrusts his 20-something son in the spotlight as the future head of a nation grappling with difficult nuclear negotiations and chronic food shortages.

Within hours of breaking the news of his father's death, state media urged the nation's people to rally around Kim Jong Un and to "faithfully revere" their next leader. The son has not appeared publicly since the announcement of his father's death.

The death speeds up a succession process that began in earnest a little more than a year ago ? scant time to gain experience, build political clout and allay skepticism at home and abroad that he can lead a nation of 24 million. His father, by contrast, had 20 years of grooming before his father, North Korea founder Kim Il Sung, passed away in 1994.

News of Kim's death shocked a nation largely kept in the dark about their leader's health even after he suffered a stroke in 2008. Abroad, there was widespread speculation throughout 2009 about who would succeed the iron-fisted ruler.

Kim Jong Un's emergence in September 2010 as the anointed successor settled the question of which of Kim Jong Il's three known sons was chosen as the third-generation leader in a family dynasty that has ruled since North Korea's post-World War II inception in 1948.

And his status as his father's anointed successor has become clear over the course of the past year.

After appointing him vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the ruling Workers' Party, Kim Jong Il unveiled the son to the world just weeks later at a massive military parade to celebrate a key party anniversary.

With the world's media in attendance and transmitting live video, the young son appeared on the balcony of the Grand People's Study Hall in a blue suit, waving as tanks loaded with long-range missiles barreled by.

Since that first glimpse of the son, North Koreans have seen him regularly on state TV, in the Pyongyang Times newspaper and in the Korean Central News Agency as he accompanied his father on trips around the country.

Stocky and youthful, he bears more than a passing resemblance to his grandfather, Kim Il Sung, as a young man ? a similarity that plays into the emphasis on lineage and legacy as just cause to make him leader.

He began appearing with his father at state events and reportedly ran the country when Kim traveled to Russia and China, and is credited at home with orchestrating a deadly November 2010 artillery attack on a front-line South Korean island that nearly brought the foes to the brink of another war.

Kim Jong Il's leadership was defined by his "songun" policy of putting the powerful military first. Kim Jong Un's formal ascension will usher in a new era of leadership ? but it remains to be seen what direction he will take the nation of 24 million people.

"It is impossible to say with certainty what his era will look like. Trying to anticipate the near future is tough enough," said Andray Abrahamian, executive director of the Choson Exchange, a Singapore-based nonprofit group that facilitates educational exchange with North Korea. "We expect greater caution and less willingness to try new things in the near term, making our programs more difficult to run. Things look like they're locking down already."

North Koreans have been told Kim Jong Un graduated from Kim Il Sung Military University; speaks several foreign languages, including English; and is a whiz at computing and technology.

But they have not been told much else.

He is said to celebrate his birthday in January, but the year ? or even the name of his mother ? have not been revealed publicly. Even his name, though whispered for years, was never published in state media until the announcement in September 2010 that he had been promoted to four-star general.

"There is a rumor that he is married, but officially we don't know," said Yoon Deok-ryong, who specializes in North Korean economic reform at the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy in Seoul.

The visits have also provided hints to what areas Kim Jong Un may favor when he formally takes power. Newly opened shops and factories churning out goods using digital technology have been favorite spots for a man said to like computers.

Two songs in vogue in Pyongyang are considered odes to Kim Jong Un: "Footsteps," an obvious reference to his role in carrying out his family's legacy, and "Song of CNC," or Computerized Numerical Control, better known elsewhere as digital technology.

In September, he spent hours at one of Pyongyang's showcase shops, a meat and fish shop on Pothongmun Street that sells whale meat, frozen quail and kielbasa, manager Ri Un Suk told The Associated Press in October.

His visit is proudly displayed on a plaque affixed to the wall, a tradition that until recently was reserved for his father and grandfather.

"He may be the future leader, but he's still a good son to his father," she said. "I was impressed by his loyalty as well as his wisdom."

A year ago, after he made his public debut, he was familiarly referred to as the "Young General."

In recent months, signs and plaques formally acknowledging him as the next leader began appearing with the title "Respected General."

On Monday, the state-run Korean Central News Agency called him the "Great Successor," and urged the people to rally around their next leader.

Kim Jong Un is expected to lean on members of his father's inner circle, including his aunt, Kim Jong Il's sister Kim Kyong Hui; her husband, Jang Song Thaek; and other Kim Jong Il confidants, experts said.

"Even though Kim Jong Un has been appointed as the successor, they may form a committee to rule the country at first," Yoon said. "His power succession is not completed yet."

There are concerns about instability due to his age and inexperience, said Narushige Michishita, an expert at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies in Tokyo.

But his age may win him backing among the young policymakers of his generation who have developed a taste for cell phones and computers, he said.

"Those people will be running the country in coming decades," Michishita said. "So in that sense we can expect some new things, but we don't know if that will result in political transformation."

Kim Jong Un is known to have studied for a few years in Switzerland as a teen and is believed to speak some German and French as well as English, though experts caution against thinking of him as reform-minded just because he lived in the West.

"I wouldn't draw huge conclusions from the fact that he spent a year or two in Europe as a boy," Delury said. "But you know, he's significantly younger, and generational shifts happen no matter wherever you are in the world, including North Korea, so he is going to have a different orientation."

Apart from these few tantalizing details, much remains unknown about Jong Un or the real breadth of his power.

"There's much uncertainty," Yoon said. "Because we don't know who's really in charge."

Will the scrappage scheme result in more automotive jobs ...

The scrappage scheme that the UK government introduced earlier this year was created to breathe new life into the motor industry, to create far more motor industry jobs and to get rid of older, a lot more polluting cars from UK roads. Even so, as the government only offers ?1,000 for cars older than ten years as component of the scheme, when the motor industry wanted it to give much more and a similar scheme in Germany presents more, UK motorists haven?t greeted the scheme with as significantly enthusiasm as they otherwise possibly may well have.

Despite the initial scepticism to the scheme nevertheless, it is still becoming utilised by numerous UK motorists who wish to trade in their old cars for new ones and receive a substantial discount on the retail value, as the manufacturer is encouraged to match the government?s ?1,000 for the old automobile.

The present marketplace scenario, with car business jobs being lost in a lot of plants all through the country, is likely to turn around when the take-up of the scrappage scheme becomes much more common and the recession begins to ease. Automotive jobs will commence to pick up once again due to the fact people will always need cars.

1 advantage for those looking for engineering jobs is since more people are holding onto their existing cars at the moment, rather than acquiring new ones, garages are finding a lot more work requirements to be completed on people?s current vehicles.

One benefit for those searching for engineering jobs is due to the fact more men and women are holding onto their existing cars at the moment, rather than acquiring new ones, garages are discovering more work wants to be completed on people?s present vehicles.

Automatic Updates Coming To Internet Explorer (NewsFactor)

Microsoft intends to begin delivering automatic updates of its Internet Explorer browser beginning next year to ensure that as many machines as possible running Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 are protected from the latest malware schemes of cyber criminals.

"Automatic updates are a very good idea based on every piece of security research I've seen," said White Hat Security CTO Jeremiah Grossman. "Keeping software up to date -- particularly Web browsers -- is critical for online security."

The new service will be available initially to those Windows customers who have activated the automatic update feature in Windows. The plan is to introduce automatic IE upgrades gradually -- with the first Windows users to see the new offering located overseas and then scaling up delivery over time.

"This is an important step in helping to move the Web forward," noted Ryan Gavin, the general manager of Internet Explorer business and marketing at Microsoft.

"We will start in January for customers in Australia and Brazil who have turned on automatic updating via Windows Update," he wrote in a blog Thursday.

Increased Protection

According to Microsoft's latest security intelligence report, the biggest online threat that Windows users face comes from socially engineered malware targeting outdated Web browsers and other aging software. Making the move to the most current products and services helps PC users increase their protection against the most prevalent online threats, the software giant said.

One of the popular features of Google's Chrome Web browser has long been its seamless, out-of-sight upgrades under the hood. Earlier this year, Mozilla likewise indicated that it would emulate Google's browser upgrade strategy by early 2012 and now Microsoft intends to follow suit.

On desktop PCs, notebooks and netbooks, IE currently holds a 52.6 percent share of the global browser market -- down from 58.8 percent in December of 2010, according to Net Applications. By adding automatic updates, however, Microsoft stands a better chance of hanging on to the IE users it already had locked in.

"I do think it will affect the rates at which people change browsers -- mainly because I think people consider switching when they are going through an upgrade cycle," said Net Applications Executive Vice President Vincent Vizzaccaro. "If the upgrade cycle happens in the background, that will take away that reminder to consider switching browsers."

An Enterprise Opt-Out

Large corporations, educational institutions and other organizations which need time to evaluate and fully integrate the latest browser upgrades will have the ability to opt out of the automatic upgrade program and develop customized browser upgrade schedules that best fit their respective business requirements.

"The Internet Explorer 8 and Internet Explorer 9 Automatic Update Blocker toolkits prevent automatic upgrades of IE for Windows customers who do not want them," Gavin wrote.

Individual consumers with automatic updating via Windows Update switched on will retain the same personal home page, search provider and default browser settings after receiving each new browser upgrade. Additionally, consumers who have previously declined invitations to install IE8 or IE9 on their PCs will not be forced to do so.

"Future versions of IE [also] will provide an option in the product for consumers to opt out of automatic upgrading," Gavin said.

Individual IE users also will be able to uninstall any IE browser update and continue receiving support for the specific version of IE that they prefer to run on their machines. Still, Gavin noted that "the Web overall is better -- and safer -- when more people run the most up-to-date browser."

France gets four bids in 4G auction (Reuters)

PARIS (Reuters) ? France's telecoms regulator has received bids from all four of the country's major operators for fourth-generation wireless licenses and will choose the winners of the auction in the coming weeks.

ARCEP said in a statement on Thursday that France Telecom, SFR, Bouygues and Iliad had submitted offers in the second round of bidding for the 4G mobile licenses.

It did not disclose how much each company had bid. But the French government aims to raise at least 1.8 billion euros ($2.33 billion) from the second round of the auction in which the best-quality frequencies are being sold in the 800 MHz band.

France has already sold off a batch of frequencies in the 2.6 GHz band for 936 million euros.

In the first round, France Telecom and soon-to-be new mobile player Iliad won the two larger blocks of 20 megahertz, while SFR and Bouygues got 15 MHz each.

The results of the auction will shape the competitive landscape in France's telecom market for years to come. The amount of spectrum an operator has determines the quality of service it can offer customers surfing the web from smartphones or tablets, a lucrative and fast-growing market.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) ? Budget cuts in a program to spur commercial space taxis will likely keep the United States dependent on Russia to fly astronauts to the International Space Station until 2017, NASA's head of space operations said on Thursday.

But the newly revamped program, intended to provide a commercial alternative following the recent retirement of NASA's space shuttles, comes with a silver lining: NASA is abandoning plans for traditional fixed-price contracts and instead will use less expensive and more flexible partnering agreements.

"It's one small step for Commercial Crew," said Bigelow Aerospace attorney Michael Gold, referring to NASA's space taxi development program. "And one giant leap for common sense."

The switch was spurred by the halving of NASA's $850 million Commercial Crew program budget request for the year that began October 1 and by NASA's determination to keep at least two space taxi designs in the running for the agency's future business.

"We would like to carry two providers at a minimum, actually more," NASA associate administrator Bill Gerstenmaier said during a conference call with reporters. "We think competition is a key piece."

Currently the agency is funding work at four firms: Boeing, Space Exploration Technologies, Sierra Nevada Corp., and Blue Origin, a start-up owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

Other aspiring space transportation companies, including Stratolaunch Systems, the recently announced start-up backed by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, are not seeking or have not been awarded NASA funds to assist with spaceship development.

"Our investment helps to ensure that this capability gets done in as timely a manner as we can actually make it occur," Gerstenmaier said.

A solicitation for the next phase of the program was due to be released on Monday, but will be delayed until the first quarter of 2012, Gerstenmaier said. The selection of companies, however, should remain on schedule for next summer.

NASA, which has $406 million to spend on the program this year, is uncertain how much money it will receive to see the development effort through the planned 21-month period.

"We want to get enough work behind us that we've got a very solid design that we can then start taking into a certification," Gerstenmaier said.

The agency had hoped to have an alternative by 2016 to sending its astronauts into space aboard the Russian Soyuz capsule, which costs more than $60 million per person per ride.

"We got an increase in the budget in fiscal year '12, which was a good thing, but it wasn't quite the funding level that we anticipated. That moved the potential service capability at least into 2017," Gerstenmaier said.

MORE LAUNCHES, LESS LAWYERING

The alternative contracting arrangement, called Space Act Agreements, has been used in a related program to develop commercial U.S. cargo ships to fly to the space station, a $100 billion research laboratory built in partnership with Russia, Europe, Japan and Canada that flies about 240 miles above Earth.

Space Exploration Technologies, or SpaceX, is preparing for its trial cargo run to the station in February, launching a Falcon 9 rocket carrying a Dragon cargo capsule. A second company, Orbital Sciences Corp. is expected to follow suit with its cargo craft later in 2012.

"Space Act Agreements yield amazing results, we need only look at the Dragon spacecraft and Falcon 9 rocket," SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell, wrote in an email to Reuters.

"We applaud NASA's decision to use Space Act Agreements for the next round of Commercial Crew and look forward to the competition," she said.

The difference between traditional government contracting and Space Act Agreements is night and day, added Gold, who oversees business growth for Bigelow Aerospace, which is developing commercial orbital habitats for research, government and business lease.

"It's the difference between a 30-page contract and one that could involve 3,000 pages of regulations," Gold said. "Even understanding what you're up against can take months of review by lawyers. If you want to spend more money on lawyers and less on launches, FAR (Federal Acquisition Regulation) is a terrific way to proceed."

Gerstenmaier said the alternative partnering arrangement would not allow NASA to get as involved technically in the space taxis' design, but "essentially we can enable them."
