NORTH CAROLINA: Guilty plea for "cuddleman" who posed as Marine

Posted on July 31, 2012 by admin

A North Carolina man posed as a U.S. Marine stationed at Quantico on online dating sites, then threatened women who declined to send him nude or seductive photographs or other images, authorities said Monday.

James M. Johnson, 29, pleaded guilty to cyberstalking and making interstate threats, according to a statement from the office of U.S. Attorney Neil H. MacBride. The plea was entered in the Alexandria Division of the Eastern District of Virginia, authorities said. Johnson will face maximum sentences of five years for each count at a sentencing scheduled for Nov. 2.

Johnson admitted to setting up dating profiles using a false name, personal information and photos of a Marine ? often using ?Cuddleman? as his screen name. He contacted at least 11 women in the mid-Atlantic region, urging them to send him photographs or pose in front of an Internet camera.

When they refused, authorities said, he threatened them. ?Johnson told [one] woman that he would ?slit [her] throat and send his friends to kill [her],? court documents state.

The threats, authorities said, at times included sexual assault, killing their children, and the posting of altered photographs of them on pornographic Web sites.

Investigators launch new criminal investigation against Russian protest leader Navalny

MOSCOW - Russia's top investigative agency says it has opened a new criminal probe against opposition leader Alexei Navalny on allegations of theft.

The 36-year-old corruption-fighting lawyer and popular blogger has played a key role in rallying Russia's young Internet generation against Vladimir Putin's rule.

Over the winter, Navalny spearheaded a series of opposition rallies in Moscow that drew up to 100,000 to the streets ahead of the March vote in which Putin won a third presidential term.

The State Investigative Committee said Tuesday that it suspects Navalny of organizing a scheme to steal assets from a state timber company. He may face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

Navalny has denied any wrongdoing.

Ways On How To Efficiently Improve Your House | Arty Apt

Carpet the bottoms of the drawers you keep your hand tools in. This will not only make the shop room a quieter place but it will help protect your valuable tools. Keep those tools rust free by spraying the carpet lightly with machine oil before you place the tools inside the drawer.

Winterize your home?s foundation! Take the time in the fall to go around the foundation of your house and identify any cracks that need sealing up. Big cracks might require big interventions to address but often smaller cracks can be sealed using expanding foam. The money you will save in heat costs will more than make up for any inconvenience!

Home improvement can also be called a honey do list. If you have one of these lists, make sure you work diligently to complete each project on the list. The list may seem never-ending, but the jobs will ultimately make your house a better, safer place to live.

If your home tools are rudimentary, then protect the wood you are working with by lubricating screws first. Not only will this help you to drive new screws in more easily, it will also prevent the wood from splitting and the screws from stripping the hole, thereby defeating the purpose. A little vaseline, wax or dish soap is all it takes.

One of the critical elements to doing any home improvement is to have the proper materials and equipment to do the job. Before starting any home improvement project, it would be a good idea to read about it some and figure out what is going to be needed to complete it. Another great resource is asking questions at the local home improvement store, they also sometimes offer classes on basics of home improvement.

A great home improvement method you can use is to actually check your faucets every year and do preventative maintenance on them. This way, you can avoid those annoying leaks and even those major breaks. It might seem like a hassle now, but you?ll be preventing a lot of work in the future.

Home improvement should never be done alone. It helps to pass the time when you have someone working with you, but it is also very important for security reasons. Be sure to bring a friend or trusted family member along for each step of the project to make sure you don?t hurt yourself.

Fix the leaky faucet in your house. The water wasted from leaks can add up to hundreds of gallons per year, leading to a higher water bill for you and an unnecessary waste of a natural resource. Fixing a leak can be as simple as replacing a washer, so there is no reason not to do this simple improvement for your home.

Major home improvements to a property such as erecting a garage or installing a pool may require permits and permission from your local Council before the work is commenced. If you are not sure of the local regulations or are planning on undertaking structural changes to the property, hire a professional to assist you to avoid costly mistakes or fines at a later date.

If you want to do all of the home improvements and not have to pay more in the long run by having someone else do it, you must start with having all of the essentials. If you do not have the tools that you need to complete your work, you will be wasting your time.

How to paint a panel door. The order of painting a panel door is quite important if you want to get a professional look. First, paint any moldings, followed by the recessed panels. Next, paint the horizontal areas, and finally the vertical areas. Always use smooth strokes, following the grain of the wood. After the first coat has dried, rub the door with fine sandpaper, wipe clean, and apply a second coat.

Even the simplest home improvement projects can seem overwhelming at first if you don?t have a good grasp of the basics. Once you know what you?re doing, though, any project is manageable. Just apply what you?ve learned from this article, and before you know it, you?ll be one step closer to turning your house into your dream home.

AT&T?s Q2 2012: Revenues Of $31.6B, Earnings Of $0.66/Share, 61% Of Wireless Subscribers On Smartphones

att-logo-smallAT&T has just released its Q2 2012 financial results -- the telecom giant reported quarterly revenues of $31.6 billion (that's up 0.3% year-over-year) and earnings of $0.66 per share (up a full 10% year-over-year). AT&T also reported operating income of $6.8 billion, a healthy jump from to the $6.1 billion it reported in the previous quarter. As solid as the numbers seem, AT&T couldn't completely beat analyst expectations. The company couldn't quite match forecasted revenues of $31.7 billion, but easily beat expected earnings of $0.63.

Mexico?s library on wheels

July 23, 2012

by Ellie Robins

A jaw-droppingly beautiful mobile library is doing the rounds of Mexico City. A local arts nonprofit, Alumnos47, had been working for years to bring a brick-and-mortar library of art books to the city, but the goal seemed to slip ever further out of their reach. So instead they converted a truck with an inside space of 215 square feet, which houses 1,500 books. It?s not a loaning library just yet, but when stationed the group converts the area outside to a reading space, with speakers providing background music. The truck also hosts workshops, seminars and events, making it not only a library but a travelling cultural centre.?Citlali L?pez Maldonado of Alumnos47 said:

Mobile libraries are not new in history.?Public education programs in Mexico began with mobile libraries in rural communities. Nowadays we can see many examples of them in Latin America, Spain and the United States, as well??The purpose is not just to bring books to citizens into public space but to take out contemporary art products from their common places of consumption, such as galleries and restricted libraries.

Look how pretty:

RIM BlackBerry Curve 9310 (Boost Mobile)

Here's an example of how pricing can change everything. The BlackBerry Curve 9310 is no longer in fashion as a modern smartphone, but it has a sneaky new purpose?as an inexpensive texting phone. Verizon couldn't pull this off with its version of the?Curve 9310?($49.99, 2 stars) because of expensive plans starting at $80 per month. But Boost Mobile certainly can, with unlimited voice and texting starting at $45 per month and going down the more you stick with the carrier. Plus, the Curve 9310 still has a fluid interface and an amazing keyboard for such a compact device.

Design, Keyboard, and Plans
Aside from software and pricing plan differences, the Curve 9310 is the same phone on both carriers. Feel free to read that one for additional details. Here, I'll focus on the appropriate changes for Boost Mobile. Regardless of carrier, the BlackBerry Curve 9310 certainly looks a lot classier than cheaper texting phones. It measures 4.3 by 2.4 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs 3.7 ounces. It's made entirely of plastic, with tapered edges, and a muted, matte gray plastic rim around the front panel. Unfortunately, this version of the 9310 trades the soft-touch back panel for a hard, glossy black plastic one. That's not a big deal, but it's prone to scratches and not?quite?as comfortable to hold.

The 2.4-inch, 320-by-240-pixel LCD screen has no touch capability, and what is now considered the absolute minimum screen resolution on a contemporary smartphone. You also get different wallpaper (woo hoo!) with the Boost version. RIM got the Curve's QWERTY keyboard right a long time ago, even though it occasionally fiddles with the key shape and spacing. This one is also stellar. The Curve 9310 is a small phone, just like it always was?Bolds are for bigger hands, Curves are for smaller hands. But I can positively fly on this keyboard, which has just the right key size, travel, and click response. I wish I could take it and glue it on some other phones.

As I mentioned above, the real story here is Boost Mobile's eminently reasonable plan pricing. It starts at $45 per month for unlimited voice, texting, and BBM?which is already almost half off of Verizon's base plan for its own Curve 9310. But on Boost, your price goes down as you pay your bills on time?$5 every six months, until 18 months in, at which point you're paying just $30 per month. That's a killer deal. Granted, this phone runs on Sprint's national network, which isn't quite as robust as Verizon's and has much slower 3G data speeds, as we found in our tests across 30 U.S. cities this year. But on a phone like this, that shouldn't be much of an issue.

Apps and Conclusions
A speedy (for this application) 800MHz processor is on board, along with BlackBerry OS 7.1. The Curve 9310 is fairly simple to navigate, with a clear layout, a sluggish stock Web browser, and enough basic apps to keep you busy. It's still great with push email. Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube clients keep you somewhat connected to this decade. The Curve 9310 is still GPS enabled on Boost, but there's no preloaded GPS app, and few good voice-enabled navigation options from third-parties.

Speaking of which, this isn't the phone to get if you want to run apps. BlackBerry App World contains roughly 40,000 apps now. But that's far below anything you can get on other smartphones, and most of the apps here aren't nearly as powerful as their iOS, Android, or even Windows Phone counterparts. And just as it was at launch time in April 2009, BlackBerry App World itself remains buggy, with some downloads and pages not completing properly and taking multiple tries. If you like apps, go with an Android phone.

So the Curve 9310 isn't a poor choice on Boost Mobile the way it is on Verizon Wireless. Still, there are other phones worth checking out. The LG Rumor Reflex ($79.99, 3.5 stars) isn't an actual smartphone like the Curve 9310, but it does have a wider QWERTY keyboard that slides out, plus a larger 3-inch touch screen for better Web browsing. Our favorite smartphone on Boost is the HTC EVO Design 4G ($299.99, 4 stars), which is much pricier up front and lacks a hardware QWERTY keyboard, but offers Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich," access to over 400,000 third-party apps, and a much larger, higher-resolution capacitive touch screen.

Apple To Hit $1,000 Share Price Next Year

Bangalore: According to the estimations it is noted that Apple would be the first to hit $1,000 share price in 2013. Reports from the analysts, however, are mixed up on Apple?s third-quarter results, to be announced on July 24. Morgan Stanley said on July 17 that it expects a ?relatively neutral event? for the company this time.

Other analysts found Apple?s prospects moving forward to a share price of $1,000 or beyond. When they say this, they have in mind the much expected release of iPhone 5 in or around October this year. The nearing Apple products such as the smaller ?iPad Mini? with 7-inch screen and Apple TV, and the rise in the sales of the company products in China, will also be reflected in the results, say the analysts.

Katy Huberty of Morgan Stanley told the investors on July 17, ?We are buyers of Apple shares heading into one of the most significant products cycles in two years ? the iPhone 5 launch this fall. We expect new products, emerging market growth and sustainable margin expansion to drive outperformance.?

Meanwhile, Brian White of Topeka Capital Markets, a full service broker-dealer offering agency, said to the investors last day, ?we believe the stock is prepared for the next major leg up that we believe will propel Apple to our $1,111 price target over the next year.?

Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray, a leading investment bank and asset management firm, is sure that the iPhone will keep taking the market share. In a survey conducted by the firm over 400 consumers, 65% of them said that they have planned to make iPhone their next smartphone. It was also noted in the survey results that the re-buy rates of iPhone has increased slightly from 93% to 94% over years. Most of them who planned to buy iPhone were waiting for the launch of iPhone 5.

However, Apple says that it expects third quarter sales of $34 billion and profit of $8.68, while the analysts expect $ 37.4 billion and profit of $10.8 billion.

Tracy Anderson Method: Mat Workout (DVD) newly tagged "dvd ...

Tracy Anderson started dancing as a child, and at age 18 she traveled from her hometown in the Midwest to New York, determined to realize her life-long dream of becoming a professional dancer. After experiencing a considerable amount of weight gain, she began to experiment and create her own workout methods that led to a complete transformation of her own body.

Alongside her work as a dancer, Tracy decided to study and research muscle structure and specific training techniques. Armed with the knowledge from her research, she developed a computer software program for training to guide her and allow her to keep the balance between weight loss and a healthy body.

After 10 years of extensive research and development, Tracy has designed several fitness systems ? including bands, bars, and cubes. These systems challenge the small muscle groups by offering resistance as well as forcing the body to rely on its balance. Tracy also designed the Hybrid Body Reformer, an apparatus that uses a fusion of aerobic and dance movements, to re-engineer the muscular structure. The overall mission of Tracy?s method is to strengthen the smaller muscle groups so that these muscles can pull in the larger muscles ? which results in a lean figure that is not bulky. Tracy?s method has transformed the bodies of countless women to their tiniest, strongest points, and she has helped her clients achieve toned and defined bodies with smooth and firm skin.

In order to share her technique with people around the world, Tracy has released three top-selling fitness DVDs and Her Perfect Design Series I-III, Beginner Dance Aerobics and Dance Cardio II are available on tracyandersonmethod.com. Additionally, Tracy?s book, Tracy Anderson?s 30-Day Method: The Weight-Loss Kick-Start that Makes Perfection Possible is available for purchase. Tracy?s latest project, Metamorphosis by Tracy Anderson, was released in early 2011. This unique approach to at-home fitness training offers 4 different series of DVDs based on 4 different body types. It is a 90-day program and consists of 1 disc for every 10 days of muscular structure work and a dance cardio DVD. Upon completion, you can enroll in Continuity, which continues with a new disc of muscular structure work every 10 days (for your body type) and a new dance cardio DVD every 90 days. Purchase of Metamorphosis allows access to an online community and the kit also comes with measuring tape, nutrition guide, and a workout tracker.

Tracy?s list of celebrity clients includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lopez, Courteney Cox and Kristin Davis. She is constantly developing new moves, routines, and techniques to ensure that her method stays fresh. Tracy has studios in Los Angeles, New York City, and a summer location in the Hamptons. To deny schoolgirls a cervical cancer jab on religious grounds is scandalous | Reni Eddo-Lodge

Teenage schoolgirls

'The HPV vaccine's sole purpose is saving lives. This patronising restriction allows gendered prejudice to trump scientific evidence.' Photograph: Alamy

There's something unique about women's health initiatives that seems to incite moral panic. Last week's 2012 London Summit on Family Planning discussed in detail the perceived and continued controversy around access to contraceptives for women in developing countries. But with issues such as reproductive rights and reproductive health, it's always worth analysing affairs closer to home. Just yesterday it was revealed that a number of religious schools in the UK chose to opt out of providing female pupils the HPV vaccine ? an immunisation that the World Health Organisation recommends young women receive to prevent cervical cancers.

It is an absolute scandal that young women are being denied access to the vaccine on religious grounds. Not only are some of these schools opting out of providing the injection, but they're also neglecting to inform GPs of their decision ? thus preventing young women from accessing the vaccine altogether. Schools that are failing to inform female pupils that they can access the vaccine outside of school premises are doing young women, and their health, a gross disservice.

When the HPV vaccine was first introduced as part of the national immunisation programme, there were cries of its mere existence encouraging teenage promiscuity from the religious right. So desperate were these people to exercise control over what women did with our bodies, they saw fit to ignore the vaccine's sole purpose: saving lives. This pre-emptive, patronising restriction allows gendered prejudice to trump scientific evidence. The human papillomavirus claims 1,000 victims a year in the form of cervical cancers, and the HPV vaccine prevents 70% of them. This means it is absolutely vital in girls in their early teens are able to access the injection.

From peer pressure to "Christian values", the reasons provided by schools that opted out of the programme are tenuous at best. One opted out because their pupils "follow strict Christian principles, marry within their own community, and do not practise sex outside marriage". Whether that is or isn't the case on an individual basis, no school should assume a monopoly over their pupils' health based on religious belief. It's ridiculous for any school to even attempt to assume omniscience about what happens in their pupils' private lives. There are lots pupils who attend religious schools who aren't religious. Furthermore, in the worst case scenario, religious values won't protect a teenage girl who has been raped or sexually assaulted from cancer ? but the HPV vaccine will.

Projecting adult paranoia about promiscuity on to young women helps no one. At the crux of religious opposition to the HPV vaccine is a belief that young women cannot be trusted to make decisions about their own bodies. But policing female bodies to satisfy outdated, sexist ideals is more than just misguided ? it is putting the lives of the next generation of women at risk. The choice to receive the vaccine must be put in the hands of the girls it is aimed at, and not blocked by any authority.

It's time for needless moralising over the bodies of women and girls to end. Whether it's religious institutions in developing countries opposing the use of contraceptives for women, or religious schools in the UK opting out of the HPV vaccination programme, restricting women and girl's access to medical aid is a matter of public health.

Fire danger rating increases in eastern Washington

by KREM.com & DNR

Posted on July 14, 2012 at 10:30 AM

SPOKANE-- Increasing fire danger in eastern Washington has prompted burn bans in the region.

As of Saturday, the Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has declared a high fire danger rating for Spokane, Lincoln and Stevens counties. Ferry County has a moderate rating, and Adams, Pend Oreille and Whitman counties are still considered a low risk.

In an effort to reduce human-caused wildfires, DNR issued a statewide burn ban on all DNR-protected lands, effective July 1, 2012, through September 30, 2012. The ban includes all forestlands in Washington except for federal lands. Campgrounds may have additional burn restrictions in place. Campers should check with their campground host before starting a campfire.

Daily updates on burn restrictions are available at 1-800-323-BURN or click here for the burn risk map.

With fire season upon us, DNR encourages homeowners to take steps to decrease the risk of their home being lost in a wildfire. DNR provides technical and financial assistance to landowners to assist in thinning trees to reduce fire hazard and increase forest health. For more information, call the Northeast Region Office at (509) 684-7474.

Mitt Romney Booed By NAACP Crowd Over Obamacare Comment

Speaking before an already-skeptical NAACP crowd, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney raised eyebrows Wednesday when he said he'd do more for the African-American community than Barack Obama, the nation's first black president.

He then drew jeers when he lambasted Obama's health care law.

After promising to repeal Obamacare, which will help an estimated seven million uninsured African-Americans obtain coverage, he heard it from the audience ...

"If you want a president who will make things better in the African-American community, you are looking at him," Romney unflinchingly told the group.

Pausing as some in the crowd heckled, he added, "You take a look!"

"For real?" yelled someone in the crowd at the annual convention.

The reception was rocky at times, though generally polite as the GOP hopeful sought to woo a Democratic bloc that voted heavily for Obama in 2008.

They will undoubtedly do so again, but Romney gets credit for even showing to an event that could not be farther from his political wheelhouse.

HBT: Howard homers in rehab, nears return

It?s unclear if Ryan Howard?s surgically repaired Achilles? tendon is ready to handle playing in the majors again, but his bat sure looks fine.

Howard went 2-for-3 with a homer and four RBIs in a minor-league rehab game yesterday at Triple-A and is now 8-for-17 (.471) with a homer, two doubles, and nine RBIs in six rehab games overall.

His homer yesterday came off former big leaguer John Maine, who?s now pitching at Triple-A for the Yankees, and John Finger of CSNPhilly.com reports that Howard also played seven innings defensively at first base without any issues.

For now he?s scheduled to play Triple-A games Thursday and Friday, at which point Howard could be cleared to come off the disabled list and rejoin the Phillies for the first time since tearing his Achilles? tendon making the final out of last year?s NLDS.

Hormone discovered that preserves insulin production and beta cell function in diabetes

Hormone discovered that preserves insulin production and beta cell function in diabetes

Tuesday, July 3, 2012

Researchers at Duke University Medical Center have found protective, anti-diabetic functions for a hormone that, like insulin, is produced by the islet cells of the pancreas. The new hormone was found to stimulate insulin secretion from rat and human islet cells and protect islet cells in the presence of toxic, cell-killing factors used in the study.

The study, which was supported in part by JDRF, a global leader in type 1 diabetes research, appears in the July 3 issue of the journal Cell Metabolism.

The findings provide insight into the health and survival of beta cells, a type of islet cell that produces insulin to regulate sugar levels. The discovery could open pathways for further research toward prevention and treatments for type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.

The researchers gave the hormone, TLQP-21 to Zucker Diabetic Fatty rats, which have a genetic propensity to develop type 2 diabetes. They saw a significant improvement in insulin and glucose (sugar) levels and less beta cell death in the treated animals.

"We think this finding is important because it is the first demonstration that TLQP-21 prevents deterioration of the beta cells and stimulates insulin secretion in the presence of glucose," said senior author Christopher B. Newgard, Ph.D., director of the Sarah W. Stedman Nutrition and Metabolism Center, and the W. David and Sarah W. Stedman Distinguished Professor. "Because diabetes starts to take hold when the number of beta cells dwindles and insulin production drops, finding the best way to produce more of this protective hormone could be valuable."

Although the researchers have so far only tested TLQP-21 in models of type 2 diabetes, they plan to test the hormone in type 1 in future studies.

Both types of diabetes are characterized by a loss of functional beta cell mass. Type 1 is an autoimmune disease characterized by selective and progressive loss of functional insulin-producing beta cells and is more severe. Type 2 is a disease characterized by beta cell dysfunction as well as peripheral insulin resistance. Most people with type 2 eventually become insulin-dependent.

"These exciting findings provide novel insight into how beta cell health and survival may be regulated in the body," said Patricia Kilian, Ph.D., director of the beta cell regeneration program at JDRF. "We are looking forward to studies that will further test how this novel hormone affects beta cell function in T1D (type 1 diabetes) models."

TLQP-21 is similar in some of its functions to another naturally occurring hormone produced in the digestive tract, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). Through different mechanisms, both hormones protect and promote insulin secretion. GLP-1 or drugs that stabilize it are widely used to treat type 2 diabetes, but with some side effects, including increased heart rate and reduced stomach emptying; the effect on intestinal function has caused some people to stop the therapy.

"What's exciting is that in the animal studies of TLQP-21, we didn't see these side effects," said lead author Samuel B. Stephens, Ph.D., a postdoctoral researcher in the Stedman Center. "The rats had typical appetites and ate normal amounts of food, and didn't show any changes in heart rate or digestion patterns when they were given large doses of the hormone."

The next step is to find a small molecule that could stimulate the islet cells to produce more of the TLQP-21 hormone, or to develop more potent or stable versions of injected hormone. Research toward a longer-acting drug will help accelerate its eventual testing in type 1 diabetes, said Newgard, who is also a professor of Pharmacology and Cancer Biology.

Judge orders woman tried in grandson's gun death

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) ? A 74-year-old Michigan woman will stand trial on murder and firearms charges in the shooting of her 17-year-old grandson at their suburban Detroit condominium.

The Bloomfield Township judge's ruling Monday means Sandra Layne faces up to life in prison if convicted.

She's accused of repeatedly shooting Jonathan Hoffman on May 18 at the West Bloomfield Township home she and her husband shared with their grandson.

In testimony Monday, a police officer said Layne came out of their condo with her hands raised and screamed, "I murdered my grandson."

Officer Derrick Kassab says Layne was hysterical as she surrendered to officers.

Prosecutors also played a 911 tape in which Jonathan says his grandmother shot him and that he was "going to die."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Companies placed more orders with U.S. factories in May from April, demanding more computers, machinery and other equipment that signal investment plans.

The increase is a welcome sign after two months of declining factory orders.

Still, factory orders are down from the start of the year. And more recent data show manufacturing activity shrank in June for the first time in three years, adding to worries that weaker global growth is weighing on the U.S. economy.

"The demand for manufactured goods is recovering moderately and irregularly, but that recovery has been relatively weak relative to the magnitude of the previous declines," said Steven Wood, chief economist at Insight Economics

Factory orders increased 0.7 percent in May from April, the Commerce Department said Tuesday.

Core capital goods, which include machinery and computers, rose 2.1 percent. That's better than the 1.6 percent estimated in a preliminary report a week ago and shows companies are still making investment plans.

Overall factory orders increased to $469 billion. That's 43.5 percent higher than the recession low reached in March 2009. But orders have fallen 2.5 percent over the past five months from their post-recession high hit in December.

Manufacturing has lost some vigor this year. U.S. job growth has slowed and consumers and businesses are less confident in the economy. Europe's debt crisis has reduced demand for U.S. exports. And manufacturing has slowed in big countries like China, which rely on U.S. factories for equipment, machinery and vehicles.

Orders for long-lasting durable goods, everything from airplanes to refrigerators, rose 1.3 percent in May. Orders for non-durable goods, which include food, paper, chemicals and energy products, edged up 0.2 percent. The increase may have been held back by falling oil and gas prices.

Still, orders are likely to decline in June, based on a report from the Institute of Supply Management. The trade group of purchasing managers on Monday said manufacturing contracted in June for the first time since July 2009 ? one month after the recession ended.

Factory production and exports declined, and a measure of new orders plunged.

Economists said the manufacturing figures from the ISM survey were consistent with growth at an annual rate of 1.5 percent or less.

Such growth would be lower than the January-March quarter's tepid annual pace of 1.9 percent. Growth of 1.9 percent typically generates roughly 90,000 jobs a month. That's considered too weak to reduce the unemployment rate, which was 8.2 percent in May.

Employers added an average of only 73,000 jobs per month in April and May, a sharp slowdown from the monthly average of 226,000 jobs added in January through March.

Despite the slowdown, manufacturers have reported job gains for eight straight months.

The government reports Friday on June employment. Economists forecast employers added just 90,000 jobs last month and no change in the unemployment rate

Insight: Voice of Mumbai attacks points finger at Pakistan

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Forty-eight hours into the bloody assault on Mumbai in November 2008, smoke was billowing from the wreckage of the Taj Mahal hotel and commandos were flushing out the last gunmen holed up in the opulent landmark of India's financial capital.

A short distance away in the city's southernmost peninsula, security forces were still battling at Nariman House, a Jewish centre where two of the Islamist militants had taken half a dozen people hostage, including a rabbi and his pregnant wife.

"Remember that every one person you kill there is like taking 50 lives," a coordinator of the rampage told the two men, according to the transcript of a telephone conversation picked up by Indian intelligence. "Get rid of these people. Kill them."

All six in the centre were killed before the gunmen were slain by security forces. In all, 166 people were killed in the three-day frenzy of attacks on two upmarket hotels, Mumbai's busy railway terminal and a fashionable cafe.

India says the voice urging the 10 militants on to bloodshed was that of Indian-born Sayed Zabiuddin Ansari, who was speaking from a "control room" in the Pakistani city of Karachi.

Last month, after more than a year of painstaking diplomacy that involved India, Saudi Arabia and the United States, Ansari was quietly put on a plane in Riyadh, flown to New Delhi and arrested.

For India it is a huge breakthrough. New Delhi is hoping that Ansari's capture will help prove its allegation - strenuously denied in Islamabad - that the Mumbai carnage was directed by people connected with Pakistan's security establishment, particularly the shadowy ISI military intelligence agency.

That could stir fresh tensions between South Asia's nuclear-armed rivals, who have already fought three wars since their independence 65 years ago, and it could put further strain on the ragged relations between the United States and Pakistan.

Ansari's extradition from Riyadh - which officials say came after pressure from Washington and despite pleas from Islamabad for him not to be sent to India - may also have delivered a jolt to Pakistan's traditionally close relations with Saudi Arabia.

"A WINDOW INTO THE CONTROL ROOM"

Indian investigators say Ansari, who is also known as Abu Jundal and Abu Hamza, has confessed he was in the "control room" talking the gunmen through their operation by satellite phone.

They believe that, alongside him there, was Hafiz Saeed, founder of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant group whose emergence the ISI nurtured in the 1990s as a proxy to fight Indian forces in the disputed Himalayan territory of Kashmir. Earlier this year the United States placed a $10 million bounty on Saeed's head, but he still moves freely around Pakistan.

Ansari's arrest may turn out to be far more critical to shedding light on the command and control of the 2008 attacks than Mohammad Ajmal Kasab, the only gunman to be taken alive and who is now on death row in a Mumbai prison.

"It is a window into the control room, who set it up, who was coming into it, who was going out," said Ajit Doval, a former head of the Intelligence Bureau, India's domestic spy agency, which has been questioning its prize catch at an undisclosed location.

"It takes us one step closer to the role of Pakistani establishment in the attacks. That will be the big worry in Islamabad," said Doval.

Indian officials caution that they are unlikely to find a smoking gun leading directly to the headquarters of Pakistan's powerful military, but they say Ansari's arrest nonetheless provides crucial details suggesting some level of complicity.

A Pakistani security official told Reuters there was quite simply no ISI involvement, and there wasn't even a control room.

A QUIET AND SHY BOY

Ansari carried a Pakistani passport - a fake, the Pakistani security official said. He was born 30 years ago in India, and brought up in a village near the dusty town of Beed, some 350 km (220 miles) east of Mumbai.

When he was about 15, his family moved to a Muslim-dominated neighborhood in Beed town, a crowded and down-at-heel area with narrow lanes, dug-up roads, open drains, a vegetable market and two mosques.

Locals say that Ansari was a timid and quiet boy, coming off worst when there were street brawls and barely making a mark at school. "None of the teachers remember teaching him," said Bharat Sonavane, principal at Beed's Balbhim College for Art, Science and Commerce, where Ansari was a student.

Trained as an electrician, he found work that brought money for a family struggling to make ends meet, including one job re-wiring the local police headquarters.

Ansari suddenly disappeared in 2006 after police linked him to an arms haul case. For the next six years his family received no word of him, until last month when his bearded face was splashed on news networks announcing his deportation and arrest.

"We thought he might be dead by now," said Ansari's mother, Rehana, a 65-year-old diabetes sufferer who spoke to Reuters from her father's tiny home in Beed.

"One night he just left home and we didn't hear from him for almost six years. No phone call, no letter," she said, holding back tears in pale green eyes framed by a black burqa, the all-enveloping garment worn by many Muslim women on the subcontinent. "It pains us ... we never imagined our Zubi would be linked to this."

ATTACKERS COACHED IN HINDI

Shortly after nightfall on November 26, 2008, three inflatable speedboats pulled up on the shores of Mumbai. The 10 men aboard had sailed across the Arabian Sea from Karachi for days, hijacking an Indian trawler on their way and killing its crew.

When they were accosted by local residents, the men were prepared. Ansari told his interrogators that he had coached the gunmen to speak Hindi with a local accent so that their assault could be passed off as a home-grown attack rather than traced back to Pakistan: at one point during the operation he scolded them for not using the proper dialect.

Indian officials who analyzed the phone conversations with the gunmen had long suspected that one of the handlers was an Indian because he used words only a fluent Hindi speaker would use, while the others spoke the mix of Punjabi and Urdu common to large parts of Pakistan.

Ansari, investigators say, has provided the names of four other people in the Karachi control room, which New Delhi maintains could not have operated without some state support.

Two of them he named as Sajid Mir, also known as Sajid Majid, and Sameer Ali.

A Pakistani-American, David Headley, who was convicted of scouting targets in Mumbai ahead of the attacks, gave the same two names to a Chicago court last year as helping mount the operation.

Headley identified Sameer Ali as a major in the ISI who had recruited him when he was briefly detained near the Pakistan-Afghan border in 2006 and Sajid Mir as a man handling foreign recruits for the LeT.

Mir was also believed to be the handler of a Frenchman accused of plotting an attack in Australia soon after the September 11 attacks. French judge Jean-Louis Brugiere who investigated the case said he believed Mir was an officer of the Pakistani military.

Ansari's revelations could have a bearing on investigations in the United States, where families of six Americans who were killed in the Mumbai attack have filed lawsuits alleging that the head of the ISI at the time, Lieutenant General Ahmed Shuja Pasha, and other operatives helped the LeT plan and orchestrate its operation.

"We believe Ansari's interrogation provides further corroboration of active ISI support in the attacks," said an official of the Indian Intelligence Bureau. "They were physically present in the control room."

EXTREMISTS IN INDIA'S BACKYARD

Pakistan, which has conducted its own investigation into the Mumbai assault and indicted seven members of the LeT - an organization it has officially banned - roundly rejects the charge that members of the ISI were involved.

"The Mumbai plot came to the attention of the ISI in 2005 or 2006," the Pakistani security official said. "The leadership of the LeT was contacted and told not to go ahead with it. But the LeT waited. After Pasha took over as ISI chief, they managed to slip under the radar and carry it out."

He said five handlers were scattered across Pakistan at the time, not together in a control room. Ansari himself was in the Sindh town of Thatta, speaking to the men in Mumbai from a Thuraya satellite phone.

The Pakistani prime minister's adviser on interior affairs, Rehman Malik, said Ansari's involvement showed that India had extremists in its own backyard who were being sent to Pakistan.

"I have the right to know how he was radicalized - was he radicalized through Muslim extremism or was he radicalized through Hindu extremism?" Malik told Reuters in an interview during a visit to London last weekend.

Indian investigators said that after leaving his hometown in 2006, Ansari crossed the porous border with Bangladesh and travelled by air to Pakistan. But it was not until some time in 2008 that they established his presence there.

The security official in Islamabad said Ansari first went to Pakistan during a brief conflict with India in the Kargil district of Kashmir in 1999, which broke out after Pakistani soldiers and militants poured across the de facto border between the two countries there.

"He thought he could just join the mujahideen on his own, but he didn't manage," the official said, describing Ansari as someone who "really believes Muslims are being suppressed around the world".

SAUDI HELP

Early last year, Ansari obtained his fake Pakistani passport and flew to Saudi Arabia, where - the official in Islamabad said - the LeT thought he could blend in with the many Pakistani laborers there. Indian police believe he was "talent-spotting" in Saudi Arabia in preparation for another "massive attack".

However, he was arrested there a few months later.

That was the starting point for a year-long effort by Indian intelligence to convince Riyadh that - despite the Pakistani passport - he was an Indian citizen and must be sent back.

"We kept telling them, don't send him to Pakistan, he is our man and if he went there he would be lost to us. In July (last year) we told the U.S. to prevent him from going to Pakistan," the Indian intelligence bureau officer said.

In May of this year, the United States put its foot down, telling Saudi Arabia there was overwhelming evidence that Ansari was an Indian national wanted for the attacks.

"The decision of the Saudi authorities to transfer Ansari to Indian custody, mindful of the unhappiness of Pakistan, will be seen in Pakistan as a blow to its much-vaunted relationship with Saudi Arabia," said Bahukutumbi Raman, a former head of India's external intelligence agency, the Research and Analysis Wing.

He said Riyadh's move reflected a growing fear that the LeT may act as a Trojan horse on its soil for al Qaeda, which is now on the backfoot in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

"Why did the Saudis eventually agree to give him up? And that, too, to a non-Islamic country? We know they have given suspects to the U.S. but not to us," said Doval, the former Indian Intelligence Bureau chief. "That's a shift."
