PST: Something special from Man City?

Yesterday, I wondered if Manchester City really had the ?stuff,? that intangible spirit that champions require to get on top and then, even more difficult, to stay atop against the pressure and expectations that come with the position.

So far we just haven?t seen much evidence of that ?something extra? from Roberto Mancini?s club, which is barely hanging into the pursuit of first-place Manchester United.

Did we see one of those wins Saturday?

City went into Carrow Road and emerged with a memorable 4-3 win. (Interesting: That was the very same score by which Alex Ferguson?s Manchester United prevailed over Newcastle just days before, that in a match I had identified as one of those special wins.)

It took a lot Saturday as City had been reduced to 10 men for more than a half thanks to Samir Nasri?s hotheadedness.

It also took special performances, one from Sergio Aguero (pictured), who was indefatigable in his work. Yaya Toure was his usual do-all self; has there been a more useful all-around man in the Premier League this year?

Edin Dzeko, with two early goals and then a second-half winner (although not officially), proved that there may be renewed life in the City crop of strikers that simply has not found net enough this year.

As City held the lead, the character and championship spirit finally began coming through. The effort and defending was resolute.

Then City was absolutely wonderful in killing off the match ? and not just with those slow-go tactics, either. The ability to hold the ball and limit the home team?s attempts to throw balls forward and make something from nothing really was quite skillful in its execution.

Something special from City? Something to inspire the effort going forward? We?ll find out, because it?s only special if it does, actually, coax a little more belief and scrappiness in the matches ahead.

How The Africa Cup of Nations affects the Premier League and Football League - Group B review

Congo DR, Ghana, Mali and Niger are in Group B of the African Cup of Nations and their involvement has either directly or indirectly affected teams such as Bristol City, Arsenal, Leicester City, Birmingham City, West Ham, Fulham, Wolves, Crewe Alexandra, Brighton & HA, Peterbrough, Doncaster Rovers, Burton Albion and Watford.

Next year the African Nations Cup is once again in full flow as Zambia look to defend their title in South Africa. As always the competition will have an effect on global football as many stars players from the bigger leagues consider joining up with their countries in a bid to become kings of their home continent.

The Confederation of African Football has set the deadline for the submission of squads for January 9th; with the full list of 23-players being named by midnight. Any late submissions will see a substantial fine and the loss of a player from the list.

Some teams have announced their preliminary squads or training camp teams early but this of course doesn?t cater for the English League system whose continued lack of a winter break means most of the English based players will not be available until shortly before the competition starts on the 19th January.

But which Premier League and football league teams are going to win and lose from the Africa Cup of Nations?

Here is a country-by-country guide for Group B.

Ghana

The most likely loss will be Bristol City winger Albert Adomah who has been included in the original preliminary squad ahead of the January 9th deadline. There is however a large pool of Ghanaian nationals playing in the UK and the some have recently been called up to action so could feature despite not being named in the preliminary squad if others succumb to injury. Arsenal youngsters Daniel Boateng and Emmanuel Frimpong were recent call-ups and Championship duo Jeff Schlupp and Akwasi Asante of Leicester City and Birmingham City respectively could also be unavailable for up to a month.

Mali

The Eagles were the national side who first ignited the debate on releasing players for the African Nations when they called up the previously uncapped Fredi Kanoute in 2004. This time around they will cause less of a fuss as West Ham United would have to have been well aware of Modibo Maiga?s intentions to travel with his country. QPR again could be hit if Samba Diakite decides to travel while Fulham midfielder Mahamadou Diarra, who has struggled with injury this season, is another maybe. Wolves are the only other team likely to lose a man in the form of Tongo Doumbia.

Niger

Another shock qualifier as they disposed of Guinea in the qualifying stages. None of the squad have links to the UK but their defeat of Guinea has prevented the National Elephants from tempting Mathias Pogba, brother of ex Manchester United prospect Paul Pogba into representation after a good season so far with Crewe Alexandra.

Democratic Republic of Congo

Their captain Lomana Lua-Lua is no longer with Blackpool but his brother Kazenga, as yet uncapped, could be called upon at the expense of Brighton and Hove Albion. There are plenty of other players from the football league who are likely to be called upon by manager Claude Le Roy including Gabriel Zakuani of Peterbrough and Herita Ilunga of Doncaster Rovers. Burton Albion midfielder Jacques Maghoma is also a likely addition while Britt Assombalonga of Watford cannot be discounted. Reported Arsenal target Dieumerci Mbokani of Anderlecht will also be on his way.

Who do you think loses out most from the 2013 African Cup of Nations?

JBL OnBeat Micro

The JBL OnBeat Micro is a small speaker designed to take up very little surface space on your bedside table or kitchen counter. Beyond that, it's the first speaker dock we've tested to feature the new Apple Lightning connector, compatible with the latest iOS devices. At $99.95 (direct), it's unrealistic to expect much in the way of powerful audio and extra features. The OnBeat Micro still provides a surprising level of volume for its size; just don't expect booming bass. If you don't have a new iOS device with the Lightning connector, be advised: There is no included dock adapter to connect your older mobile device, only a USB port on the rear panel for charging.

Design
JBL makes a wide range of speaker dock types, with the most obvious differentiator in the range being size. While last year's magnificent, wireless JBL OnBeat Xtreme was a bulky and powerful audio system, the OnBeat Micro is tiny, measuring 2.3 by 6.6 by 6.6 inches (HWD) and 12.8 ounces. The docking area is recessed along the top panel.

A Power button is situated in front of the dock along with a Volume control, and that's it. The rest of the Micro is a rounded, simple metallic mesh speaker grille that hides a pair of 2-watt, full-range drivers. Along the back panel, there's a connection for the included power adapter, a 3.5mm Aux input, and a USB connection for charging non-Lightning devices.?A rubberized ring on the bottom panel keeps the Micro from dancing across your tabletop when it's playing loud, vibration-prone music.

The Micro is also portable?that is, if you add four (not-included) AAA batteries to the compartment on the bottom panel. We'd rather see a rechargeable option here, but any type of portability in this price range is a nice plus, so we won't be picky. JBL estimates the battery life at roughly 5 hours of audio playback.

About that Lightning connection: Progress is progress, and like the blog post commenter who proudly writes "First," JBL gets to enjoy the first-ness of coming to market earlier than any other speaker docks with a Lightning connection. But just like that commenter, JBL is likely to be the only entity truly excited about this development. If you don't own a new iOS device, you are not invited to this party. JBL doesn't include an adapter to allow older, 30-pin devices to be docked here. You can buy one, but it'll cost you around $15 or more.?Sure, you can use the OnBeat Micro's 3.5mm Aux input, but that's not why one buys a speaker dock, is it?

Another minor annoyance: depending on your device's case, you may have to remove it before connecting to the dock, but this seems to be more an issue of case design than the speaker dock's design.?There is no included remote control. And, it should be obvious by looking at the photographs, but this speaker is not designed to suport an iPad?small iOS devices, only.

Performance
You shouldn't expect big sound from a frame this size, and yet, the OnBeat Micro packs a surprising punch. It would be almost unfair to talk about its bass response; there's hardly room for even a woofer in the Micro's petite enclosure. But it sure can get quite loud for its size; if you're planning to use it as an alarm clock, consider yourself warned. You'll definitely wake up if you max out the volume on this thing in the morning, but you may have a heart attack.JBL OnBeat Micro inline

So, adjusting our expectations for $100 sound, the OnBeat Micro is a pleasant surprise. Not only can it get loud, but at moderate volumes, it delivers audio clearly and distortion-free. Playing Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild" at maximum volume produced no distortion, and the vocals and attack of the kick drum loop remained crisp and clear. Obviously, there's not much bass response to speak of, but JBL does a good job of making sure the system doesn't sound too thin or weak.

The Knife's "Silent Shout," on the other hand, does distort at top volumes, though it distorts on the drum loop's low-mid content, and not on the sub-bass kick drum resonance that most speakers fizzle out on. This tells us a couple things: The OnBeat Micro will distort on certain types of bass, and it does not reproduce the type that destroys most weak drivers (sub-bass), thus it won't distort on those frequencies. Needless to say, this is not a booming system, and bass lovers will need to spend more money on a system with more substantial power and larger drivers if they wish to hear sub-bass content accurately and cleanly.

Classical tracks, like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," sounds predictably bright and lacking a bit in the lower register content. Deep percussion and lower register strings exist in the mix, but they don't stand out quite like the higher strings and percussion do. Again, this is to be expected, and the OnBeat Micro does a good job of making the mid-level frequencies it can reproduce stand out and add body to the overall mix. The Micro also has just the right amount of brightness?nothing sounds harsh or over the top, and things are always clear and accurate.

As for functionality, the OnBeat Micro is sophisticated enough to automatically switch between the docked iOS device and a device connected to the Aux input rather than play both sound sources simultaneously—it will favor the iOS device if it is playing, and switch over to the Aux device if you press Pause on the docked device. Seems like a common sense feature, but one that's nonetheless useful when playing back-and-forth between two sound sources over the course of a night.

All told, the JBL OnBeat Micro tries its hardest to push out rich, clean audio, and it does so with a bit more power than you'd expect upon first glance. For its price, and it's first-to-market Lightning connection, it's a good deal.?If Bluetooth support is more compelling to you than a physical dock, the Logitech UE Mobile Boombox?is a solid option; if audio quality is more important to you, the identically-priced Edifier Exclaim e10 is a high-quality PC speaker set with an Aux input for use with mobile devices. Finally, if?you were hoping for an affordable dock that will also support your iPad, the iLuv ArtStation Pro iMM514 and the iLuv iSP245 Mo'Beats Speaker Stand are two decent, if not stellar, options?the former has a docking arm and little more speaker power, and the later has Bluetooth functionality.?

The Relationship Mistake I'll Never Make Again - Huffington Post

I've never really been one to make a New Years resolution. I've always figured that if the need arose to join Weight Watchers, I'd try to get in there early so that by the time the January rush rolled in, I'd be the success story. "Just look at her now!" I'd be on the pamphlets.

That's sort of my approach to addressing most things that aren't exactly perfect about me. Most centrally, the fact that I am not in a relationship and would like to be. So for the past year rather than weight watching I have been trying my best to find true love. Only my search has been a two-steps-forward-one-step-back break dance. I figured that by this point I'd have stumbled head first into my J.Crew ad of love or at least not be waking up in strange beds with my hair matted to my face. No such luck. If you know me, though, you know that my search was probably doomed from the beginning, starting with the love business cards I created for myself and ending with getting fired from my three week stint as a date reporter.

"Let me ask you a legitimate question," my editor wrote after I'd emailed that I would rather sit at home and pick my cuticles than go out on a second date. "Are you excited about actually dating right now? Totally fine if you aren't, but I think it's something you seriously need to assess."

I'd been caught. Seriously, I don't know if I was ever that serious about any of it. I'm sure there were reasons: to do lists, pesky 2 AM "I really miss you text messages," and things about myself that I really wanted to be better. Also, I still had a twin bed. At the time, I didn't want to make room or even try. Well, I sort of tried...

I tried writing query letters to voodoo doctors, hoping that they could give me some of their juju. Sometimes I tried to go on normal dates with men who were normally interested in me. If anyone asked (or didn't) I regaled them with all the details of how hard I was trying. So if you were lucky enough to know me in the past year, you know how much I talked about myself and my love life. Never shut up about it. Everyone knew when I'd met someone, or stopped responding. Everybody knew when the sex was good, and when I wanted to hurl myself out of a car window.

Some of the guys gave me writing material, so I told myself it was worth it. There was the one who wrote me overly verbose, tequila-infused letters asking what it was that I wanted. There was the one whom I'd slept with one summer who I had the good fortune of running into on a Martha's Vineyard bound ferry, while vomiting into a bag. He and his girlfriend were wearing matching Sea Bands. There was the one who invited me on a top secret Valentine's Day date because I was the tragic single girl and thus couldn't be taken on a real Valentine's Day date that his friends might find out about. There was the one I always went back to. Always. There was the one who arrived with his own stories: model girlfriends, dinners with Mick Jagger, and yes, his marriage. They were always interesting. When it ended as every good story inevitably ends, I wasn't sad. I figured there would be another episode.

Until I was sad. It happened unexpectedly when one of my favorite stories nearly ran me over in an intersection driving home from the holidays with this real life girlfriend. I didn't expect to feel anything except annoyed that his dumb SUV was blocking the crosswalk. But when I arrived home that day, there were these gross tears. I shouldn't have even been upset: I'd told him he was boring and that I didn't want to date someone who ate chopped salads. But I was. Because for the first time it felt so much realer than how I had written it. He wasn't the heartbroken khaki suit who secretly still loved me but would be forced to settle for a life of boredom with someone who wasn't me. He had someone to take home for the holidays, while all I had were all my tales of love gone wrong.

It didn't click immediately -- what I'd been doing. I had to get drunk first, do a really nice walk of shame, and continue to talk about my love life for at least three more weeks. But after sitting in a sticky cab with a massive hangover and ripped tights, I think I got my resolution, so this year I've resolved to stop mutating my love life (or lack there of) into a fractured fairy tale. In fact, I think I will stop talking about it all together.

You're telling yourself that this is intuitive, right? Why has it taken me so long to learn not to kiss and tell? You've never believed you were the second coming of Carrie Bradshaw or Cinderella.

Lies. You totally have, even if you didn't take it quite as far as I did. You've posted photos to Facebook for the sole purpose of letting him know how freaking amazing you look, you've made your friends listen to you agonize over the subtext of his 'what are you doing' text message, and you've waited for the "Likes" to pop up when you change your status from single to in a relationship. It's cool, at least you didn't write a 1000 word essay about it.

But I think I've learned in the most mixed up way that love isn't just a really well written story. And most importantly, you don't really give it much of a chance when you turn everyone you meet into a potential Mr. Big.

So that it my resolution: shutting up. What's yours? How about to be more adventurous, to stop pretending or to give him (in spite of his oddities) a chance? I hope with all my heart that you give whatever changes you would like to make in the new year a fighting change. And I hope even more that when whatever you want this year arrives at your doorstep, you don't say a word about it. Just make room and let it in.

Are you making any relationship resolutions this year? Share them in the comments below.

UFC 155?s Derek Brunson was a cheerleader before he started fighting

Long before he put together a 9-2 record and earned a spot against Chris Leben at UFC 155, Derek Brunson was a cheerleader. As he shows in his audition video for "The Ultimate Fighter," Brunson was an accomplished tumbler and stunter. Skip to the 2:10 mark to see him toss his partner up into one-handed stunts and throw a double-twisting flip.

He talked about his cheerleading past with MMA Fighting, and pointed out how difficult cheerleading can be.

"I can do flips, and I was like tossing girls in the air. That's where I got my strength from, just controlling girls in the air. You get core strength, your chest gets all big. It makes you really strong, like you look on steroids, but you don't have to take steroids because of cheerleading."

Though Brunson wrestled in college, he said he did have scholarship offers for cheerleading. Wrestling and eventually MMA won out. Brunson admitted that MMA is more dangerous than cheerleading, but it's still tough.

"Cheerleading is definitely hard on your body. That's why I decided to wrestle in college, not cheerlead."

Good News! Another BB&W Engagement! | Beyond Black & White

Good News! Another BB&W Engagement!

I am THRILLED to announce that Shaun Brown has asked his girlfriend, Victoria for her hand in marriage, and she has accepted!

The newly engaged couple, Shaun and Victoria!

I am THRILLED to announce that Shaun Brown has asked his girlfriend, Victoria for her hand in marriage, and she has accepted! If you?ll recall, Shaun Brown is our resident conservative. You can read more here. This is the first interracial relationship for both Shaun and Victoria, and it took a while for both of them to adjust. But their love, common values and devotion to each other overcame it all, and Shaun asked for Victoria?s hand on Christmas.

Here?s what Shaun had to say:

?

Victoria and I have been praying together and separate for about 9 months for God to move in our relationship and guide us.? We both wanted to move our relationship to the next level.? We also wanted to make sure we where ready, and really could be the best person for each other at that next level.? We have been joking about wanting to get married for about a year now.? I knew this time last year that I wanted to be with Victoria for the rest of my life.? I have never loved someone as much as i love her, and my love for her grows each day!? I saved up enough money to buy the ring in February of this year.? This ring has been sitting in my gun case for 11 months.? I had to put it out of sight because i wanted to give her the ring so bad!? We kept praying and discussing the idea of getting married and about 3 weeks ago we both got the same message from God.? Everything is going to be alright.? I had asked God for a sign of when the time would be right.? When Victoria told me the had gotten the feeling and message from God that everything was going to be alright.? I was overjoyed!? God had laid that same message on my spirit just a week or so before that.? Christmas has always been a time people propose, the lights, the smiles, the opening of presents and joy in the air.? It is just a perfect time to share the love you have for someone.? On to the fun part, how I proposed to her.

I got a red box from a close friend that was big enough to put the ring box inside.? This red box had a Santa on top of it to help hide any HINT that it was a engagement ring.? I was able to hide the box INSIDE of the Christmas tree.? It was hard to see from the outside unless you knew to look for it.? After we opened presents on Christmas morning, i told her she had 1 more gift and she had to find it.? Victoria was looking all around the house, and after about 2 minutes i told her it was in the living room.? I kept giving her hints until i said ?Look in the tree?.?? She saw the box and she had this HUGE smile on her face.? She said ?What is it?!?? I told her to let me see the box so i could take the tape off.? We opened the box and i got on one knee in her living room.? According to Victoria i said a bunch of stuff, but all she could remember was ?I love you with all of my heart and i want to spend the rest of my life with you.? Will you marry me??? She said YES!!!!!

We are going to start planning the wedding starting next month.? We are looking at the first weekend in November of 2013, but we have not set a date as of yet.? First we got to get a budget together!!

We want to thank the BB&W community and Chris for your support and encouragement with Interracial relationships.? I hope one day our story will help someone else take that leap of faith and find someone you LOVE, no matter their race, color, creed.? We both are so happy and excited!? Happy New Year!

?

Congrats, Shaun and Victoria!

Daily Deals Future & Possibilities for 2013 - Work On the Internet

Year 2012 brought numerous changes in the daily deals market. Groupon, still a dominating name in the market, witnessed some accounting hassles; various new daily deals platforms came and various tectonic shifts were also noticed. So, the concluding year was a kind o mixed bag for daily deals market. Lessons learnt from the past will certainly shape the daily deals future & possibilities for 2013. So, let get to know what the year might bring, betting on ideas that have gained popularity;

Paper will be pass?, plastic & mobile will become popular

Paper vouchers will become a thing of the past; card-linked offers will gain popularity. Mobile-based redemption models like Passbook and Google Wallet are rapidly gaining acceptance and no one would be surprised if usage of paper vouchers would entirely disappear within the next four-five years. Smart phones usage has skyrocketed and mobile based redemption platforms are betting money on the fact that the trend will not reverse. There are strong reasons to believe the same with Apple and Samsung selling like hotcakes.

Uniqueness will still prosper

The glitter that Groupon carried at the very beginning has long faded away. Having tie-ups with some local merchants and handful of deals on a website doesn?t work any longer. Upcoming Groupon clone websites realize this and thus come with a unique business pitch. Groupon itself has started treading a different road with Groupon Goods and Getaways. In the same way, there are secret deals for big brands, adventure deals and gender specific deals. So, the upcoming year will also bring similar experiments from the daily deals aspirants.

More will disappear

The glitter might have diminished but the dollar glow that surrounds the deals business has not faded yet. Entrepreneurs are still hopeful that they can make a place in the deals market and to a certain extent they are right to believe in the potential of a smart Groupon clone. However, not everyone will be able to sustain in the market for long run. Hence, the news will keep coming about one or the other daily deals player leaving the market.

Deals will be married with advertising

Quite recently, daily deals market has also garnered interest from advertisers to introduce new products and get rid of excess inventory. Physical display advertising asks for a lot of monetary investment; even digital one doesn?t come cheap. In such a scenario, if a web user can be lured into to take notice of something good in the form of daily deal, it can be win-win scenario for advertisers. Modern daily deal software offer scope for the same if one is open to experimentation and new ideas.

Growing popularity of dynamic pricing

Dynamic pricing was limited to airline sector but has now started showing signs of emergence in retail too. Amazon is a fine example for it. The concept has potential to garner interest from a deals platform owner and finding its way in the daily deals aggregator script but it is still to be found how buyers will receive it. So, these are the points that may thread the web for ?daily deals ideas? related searches in the year 2013.

bitFATdeals is a dynamic daily deals Script that comes with rich deals, merchant, admin and CMS features. Developed by FATbit Technologies, the script is on offer with custom design, 5 revisions and 1-Year technical support.

Grim milestone: Chicago records 500th homicide

By Lauren Jiggetts and Lauren Petty, NBCChicago.com

A man gunned down Thursday on Chicago's west side marked what police say is the city's 500th homicide of the year. It's a dubious distinction that hasn't occurred since 2008, when the city ended the year with 512 murders.

Police are releasing few details about the shooting that happened around 9 p.m. in the 4900 block of West Augusta. The man was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he died.

At a peace dinner held Thursday, residents came together to talk about ways to end violence. Alderman Anthony Beale, who is running for Jesse Jackson Jr.'s old 2nd Congressional District seat, said Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy needs to change strategies.

"His philosophy is not working,"?Beale said. "We need to put resources where the problems are, and then you will see crime drop across the city."

Chicago surpassed 2011's 435 murder total in October

Police said Chicago's 499th homicide victim was a man who died after he was shot at least four times ? including in the face and chest ? in a Gage Park neighborhood alley Wednesday night on the Southwest Side.

Frederico Martinez, of the 5400 block of South California Avenue, died from gunshot wounds he suffered near his home, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner?s office.

Police said the 32-year-old Martinez was standing with a female in an alleyway down the block from his home when a light-colored pick-up truck approached and somebody inside opened fire.

Martinez was shot in the face, chest and both arms and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died, authorities said.

Behind the troubling statistics, flashing lights and crime tape, communities throughout the city are searching for solutions.

"There's no magic spell that can end it. It's a matter of people and neighborhoods coming together and deciding that it's not going to happen," said neighbor Robert Grider.

Larry Pickens, who is running in the special election in the 2nd Congressional seat, offered a few suggestions Thursday: "Teaching our young people alternative dispute resolution, non-violent strategies for addressing conflict and getting guns off the street."

Toyota acceleration settlement gets preliminary OK

(AP) ? A U.S. judge gave preliminary approval Friday to a $1 billion-plus settlement with Toyota Motor Corp. in cases involving problems of sudden, unintended acceleration by its vehicles, a plaintiffs' attorney said.

Attorney Steve Berman said in a statement he was pleased District Judge James V. Selna gave swift initial approval.

Toyota has said the deal, announced Wednesday, will resolve hundreds of lawsuits from motorists who said the value of their Toyota vehicles plummeted after recalls stemming from claims that the Japanese automaker's cars and trucks accelerated unintentionally.

The preliminary approval means current and former Toyota owners included in the settlement will receive information through notices expected to be mailed in early March. Information about the settlement will also be published in newspapers around the country.

Selna plans to hold a fairness hearing June 13 to consider granting final approval.

Numerous cases filed since 2009 were consolidated in Selna's court and divided into two categories: economic loss and wrongful death. Claims by people who seek compensation for injury and death due to sudden acceleration are not part of the settlement; the first trial involving those suits is scheduled for February.

Toyota has recalled more than 14 million vehicles worldwide due to acceleration problems in several models and brake defects with the Prius hybrid.

Toyota, which has blamed driver error, faulty floor mats and stuck accelerator pedals for the problems, plans to take a one-time, $1.1 billion pre-tax charge against earnings to cover the estimated costs of the settlement. Berman has said the total value of the deal is between $1.2 billion and $1.4 billion.

Toyota plans to offer cash payments from a pool of about $250 million to eligible customers who sold vehicles or turned in leased vehicles between September 2009 and December 2010. The company also will provide supplemental warranty coverage for certain vehicle components and retrofit about 3.2 million vehicles with a brake override system designed to ensure a car will stop when the brakes are applied, even if the accelerator pedal is depressed.

The settlement would also establish additional driver education programs and fund new research into advanced safety technologies.

Russia's adoption ban exposes political rift

Russia's upper house of parliament today unanimously approved a ban on US citizens adopting Russian children, a highly charged move that appears to have prompted an unusual public split among government officials.

The Dima Yakovlev bill, named after one of 19 Russian children to die due to abuse or negligence at the hands of adoptive US parents in the past two decades, now goes to the Kremlin for President Vladimir Putin?s consideration. In his only comments so far on the anti-adoption measure, Mr. Putin said last week that it was "emotional but adequate," which is widely seen as an indication that he will sign it into law.

The legislation was originally framed as a tit-for-tat response to the Magnitsky Act, a US measure signed into law by President Barack Obama earlier this month that aims to punish officials connected to the 2009 prison death of Russian whistle-blowing lawyer Sergei Magnitsky. But the Russian legislation has been amended beyond recognition by hardline lawmakers and now looks like a shotgun law to punish US citizens who become involved in almost any kind of non-business activity in Russia.

Many experts think that Putin may yet act as the "voice of reason" and strip the ban on adoption out of the bill before he signs it.

"This whole discussion over the adoption ban has served the purpose of shifting public attention from the corrupt Russian officials targeted under the US Magnitsky Act to the problems of orphans and the dangers they face in foreign homes," says Nikolai Petrov, an expert with the Moscow Carnegie Center.

Get our FREE 2013 Global Security Forecast now

"It's perfectly possible that Putin will ultimately adjust the adoption ban, but leave in place many of the other tough measures in this bill that haven't gotten much attention," Mr. Petrov says. Those measures include even harsher restrictions that would prevent any US passport holder from holding a leadership post in any Russian organization that is deemed by authorities to engage in politics.

The adoption ban has also become the focus of controversy and prompted a rare government split inside Russia. This week a liberal radio station leaked news of a memo by Deputy Prime Minister Olga Golodets warning that the proposed ban would violate Russian law and at least two treaties that Russia is party to. It would also overturn a bilateral accord on adoptions, negotiated between the United States and Russia, which came into force last month.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Education Minister Dmitry Livanov have also spoken out against the anti-adoption bill. Putin?s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, voiced annoyance that the government?s internal disagreements were being aired in public, but still signaled support for the measure.

"Learning about official correspondence from the media is not always pleasant," Mr. Peskov told the Kommersant FM radio station yesterday. But "it would be a mistake to think that there is staunch opposition to the bill within government. On the contrary, there are many arguments in favor of it," he said.

Many Russians believe it is a national shame that thousands of children are adopted by foreigners each year. According to a public opinion survey published this week by the state-run Public Opinion Fund, 56 percent of Russians support the proposed adoption ban, while just 21 percent oppose it.

Pavel Astakhov, the Kremlin's children's rights ombudsman and a strong supporter of the ban, said in a letter to Putin published today that Russia could simply pull out of the bilateral agreement with the US and that the move would violate no Russian laws.

Meanwhile, about 130,000 Russians have signed a petition at the website of opposition newspaper Novaya Gazeta asking the Kremlin to scrap the proposed ban.

In a sign that the ill will generated by the issue might snowball further, a petition posted at the White House's website, signed by over 54,000 Russians and Americans, urges President Obama to expand the so-called Magnitsky List by adding the names of all the Russian lawmakers in the two chambers who voted for the adoption ban. About 7,000 signed a petition calling for Obama to add Putin's name to the list.

Over the past two decades, about 60,000 Russian children have been adopted by US families. Of those, at least 19 died due to parental abuse or neglect. Each one of those cases ignited a firestorm of public outrage in Russia, and led to two suspensions of all foreign adoptions.

It also led to several efforts to tighten up Russia's once-lax foreign adoption process. Today, prospective parents are no longer able to arrange an adoption on their own, but must work through heavily regulated and fully accredited agencies, says Alyona Senkevich, a representative of Hand-in-Hand, one of fewer than 40 US-based adoption agencies still accredited to work in Russia.

"It's heartbreaking to think that we just signed the bilateral adoption agreement. . .. The main impact of this law (if Putin signs it) would be to strip Russian orphans of the right to be adopted abroad,? she says. ?They will become the victims of political games."

Under Russian law, a child is not eligible for foreign adoption until the child has been rejected at least three times by prospective Russian adoptive parents? which usually happens for health reasons.

Albert Likhanov, president of the non-governmental Russian Children's Fund, says that the proposed ban would result in the approximately 1,000 orphans adopted each year by US families to be institutionalized instead of ending up in loving homes.

"I fully understand the wish of many Russians that our children would all be adequately cared for in Russia. But this is not the situation today, and a child cannot wait for everything to get stabilized," he says.

Mr. Likhanov said that Putin?s predecessor, Dmitry Medvedev, once pointed out that in 2008 alone there were 130,000 cases in Russia of violence against children and over 2,000 deaths.

"There is a crisis in our system, and this debate shows that there are people who are willing to use our orphans as political footballs. . . this conflict makes clear that all is not well in own kingdom,? he says.

Ability to metabolize tamoxifen affects breast cancer outcomes

Dec. 26, 2012 ? For nearly a decade, breast cancer researchers studying the hormone therapy tamoxifen have been divided as to whether genetic differences in a liver enzyme affect the drug's effectiveness and the likelihood breast cancer will recur. A new study by researchers from the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center and the Austrian Breast and Colorectal Cancer Study Group provides evidence that genetic differences in the enzyme CYP2D6 play a key role in how well tamoxifen works.

"Our findings confirm that, in early breast cancer treated with tamoxifen, genetic alterations in CYP2D6 lead to a higher likelihood of recurrence and death," says Mayo Clinic oncologist Matthew Goetz, M.D., lead author of the study in the journal Clinical Cancer Research.

In the clinical trial, Dr. Goetz and his colleagues studied the rates of cancer recurrence and death in two groups: postmenopausal women with primary estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer who received tamoxifen for five years and those who received tamoxifen for two years followed by the aromatase inhibitor anastrozole for three years. Anastrozole is a breast cancer drug whose metabolism does not require the CYP2D6 enzyme.

The study showed that women who were born with genetic alterations of CYP2D6 that abolish the enzyme's critical metabolizing activity and who took tamoxifen for five years had recurrence of breast cancer, or died at a rate 2.5 times higher than women with normal CYP2D6 enzyme activity. Women with intermediate levels of the CYP2D6 enzyme had rates of recurrence or death 1.7 times higher than women with normal CYP2D6 activity. Importantly, Dr. Goetz notes, that genetic alterations in CYP2D6 did not affect the likelihood of recurrence or death in women who switched to anastrozole after two years of tamoxifen.

"Switching from tamoxifen to an aromatase inhibitor may be one reason for the discrepant studies surrounding CYP2D6 and tamoxifen -- as information about whether a patient took an aromatase inhibitor after tamoxifen was not available in most of the prior studies," says senior author James Ingle, M.D., of Mayo Clinic, an expert on hormone therapies for breast cancer.

A blood test can determine whether a woman has alterations in CYP2D6 and predict how efficiently her body will convert tamoxifen to endoxifen. Approximately 5 to 7 percent of European and North American populations are considered poor metabolizers of tamoxifen.

"The results of this successful high-level international research collaboration are an important step forward in our quest to individualize breast cancer treatment and provide tailored care to women with breast cancer," says Michael Gnant, M.D., professor of surgery at the Medical University of Vienna and president of the Austrian study group.

So what should a woman do if she is unable to effectively metabolize tamoxifen into its most active form? Dr. Goetz believes that the current recommendation of switching from tamoxifen to an aromatase inhibitor is likely to result in the greatest benefit in women with decreased CYP2D6 metabolism. For CYP2D6 poor metabolizers, avoiding tamoxifen altogether and starting out with an aromatase inhibitor may be the best approach, he says.

Dr. Goetz's group is working with the National Cancer Institute to develop endoxifen as an alternative to tamoxifen. If women can be given endoxifen, the active part of tamoxifen, it won't matter how tamoxifen gets metabolized, he says.

The study is partially funded by the National Institutes of Health, co-authors include Vera Suman, Ph.D.; Tanya Hoskin; Mary Kuffel; Stephanie Safgren; Carol Reynolds, M.D.; Matthew Ames, Ph.D.; and Richard Weinshilboum, M.D., all of Mayo Clinic; Martin Filipits, Ph.D.; Raimund Jakesz and Margaretha Rudas of the Medical University of Vienna; Richard Greil and Otto Dietze of Paracelsus Medical University, Salzburg, Austria; and Alois Lange and Felix Offner of Medical Hospital Feldkirch, Austria.

Pope's Christmas message focuses on Mideast, China

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? In his Christmas message to the world Tuesday, Pope Benedict XVI called for an end to the slaughter in Syria and for more meaningful negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians, while encouraging more religious freedom under China's new leaders.

Delivering the traditional speech from the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, Benedict also encouraged Arab spring nations, especially Egypt, to build just and respectful societies.

The pope prayed that China's new leadership may "esteem the contribution of the religions, in respect for each other" to help build a "fraternal society for the benefit of that noble people."

It was a clear reference to the Chinese government's often harsh treatment of Catholics loyal to the pontiff instead of to the state-sanctioned church. Earlier this month, the Vatican refused to accept the decision by Chinese authorities to revoke the title of a Shanghai bishop, who had been appointed in a rare show of consensus between the Holy See and China.

As the 85-year-old pontiff, bundled up in an ermine-trimmed red cape, gingerly stepped foot on the balcony, the pilgrims, tourists and Romans below backing St. Peter's Square erupted in cheers.

Less than 12 hours earlier, Benedict had led a two-hour long Christmas Eve ceremony in the basilica. He sounded hoarse and looked weary as he read his Christmas message and then holiday greetings in 65 languages.

In his "Urbi et Orbi" speech, which traditionally reviews world events and global challenges, Benedict prayed that "peace spring up for the people of Syria, deeply wounded and divided by a conflict that does not spare even the defenseless and reaps innocent victims."

He called for easier access to help refugees and for "dialogue in the pursuit of a political solution to the conflict."

Benedict prayed that God "grant Israelis and Palestinians courage to end long years of conflict and division, and to embark resolutely on the path to negotiation."

Israel, backed by the United States, opposed the Palestinian statehood bid, saying it was a ploy to bypass negotiations, something the Palestinians deny. Talks stalled four years ago.

Senior Palestinian official Saeb Erekat said that in a meeting with the pope last week, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas "emphasized our total readiness to resume negotiations." The Palestinians have not dropped their demand that Israel first stop settlement activities before returning to the negotiating table.

Hours earlier, in the ancient Bethlehem church built over the site where tradition holds Jesus was born, candles illuminated the sacred site and the joyous sound of prayer filled its overflowing halls.

Overcast skies and a cold wind in the Holy Land didn't dampen the spirits of worshippers in the biblical West Bank town. Bells pealed and long lines formed inside the fourth-century Church of the Nativity complex as Christian faithful waited to see the grotto that is Jesus' traditional birthplace.

Duncan Hardock, 24, a writer from MacLean, Virginia, traveled to Bethlehem from the republic of Georgia, where he had been teaching English. After passing through the separation barrier Israel built to ward off West Bank attackers, he walked to Bethlehem's Manger Square where the church stands.

"I feel we got to see both sides of Bethlehem in a really short period of time," Hardock said. "On our walk from the wall, we got to see the lonesome, closed side of Bethlehem ... But the moment we got into town, we're suddenly in the middle of the party."

Bethlehem lies 10 kilometers (6 miles) south of Jerusalem. Entry to the city is controlled by Israel, which occupied the West Bank in 1967.

For those who couldn't fit into the cavernous Bethlehem church, a loudspeaker outside broadcast the Christmas day service to hundreds of faithful in the square.

Their Palestinian hosts, who welcome this holiday as the high point of their city's year, were especially joyous this season, proud of the United Nations' recognition of an independent state of Palestine just last month.

"From this holy place, I invite politicians and men of good will to work with determination for peace and reconciliation that encompasses Palestine and Israel in the midst of all the suffering in the Middle East," said the top Roman Catholic cleric in the Holy Land, Latin Patriarch Fouad Twal in his annual address.

Back at the Vatican, Benedict offered encouragement to countries after the Arab spring of democracy protests. He had a special word for Egypt, "blessed by the childhood of Jesus."

Without citing the tumultuous politics and clashes in the region, he urged the North African region to build societies "founded on justice and respect for the dignity of every person."

Benedict prayed for the return of peace in Mali and harmony in Nigeria, where, he recalled "savage acts of terrorism continue to reap victims, particularly among Christians."

The Vatican for decades has been worried about the well-being of its flock in China, who are loyal to the pope in defiance of the communist's government support of an officially sponsored church, and relations between Beijing and the Holy See are often tense.

Speaking about China's newly installed regime leaders, Benedict expressed hope that "they will esteem the contribution of the religions, in respect for each other, in such a way that they can help to build a fraternal society for the benefit of that noble people and of the whole world."

Acknowledging Latin America's predominant Christian population, he urged government leaders to carry out commitments to development and to fighting organized crime.

In Britain, the royal family was attending Christmas Day church services at St. Mary Magdelene Church on Queen Elizabeth II's sprawling Sandringham estate, though there were a few notable absences. Prince William is spending the holiday with his pregnant wife Kate and his in-laws in the southern England village of Bucklebury, while Prince Harry is serving with British troops in Afghanistan.

Later Tuesday, the queen delivered her traditional, prerecorded Christmas message, which for the first time was broadcast in 3D.

At Canterbury cathedral, Anglican leader Rowan Williams delivered his final Christmas day sermon as archbishop of Canterbury. He acknowledged how the church's General Synod's vote against allowing women to become bishops had cost credibility and said the faithful felt a "real sense of loss" over the decision.

In the U.S., the Rev. Jesse Jackson brought his message of anti-violence and gun control to a Chicago jail, using his traditional Christmas Day sermon at the facility to challenge inmates to help get guns off the streets.

"We've all been grieving about the violence in Newtown, Connecticut, the last few days," he told reporters after addressing inmates, referring to the school shooting that killed 26 children and adults. "Most of those here today ... have either shot somebody or been shot. We're recruiting them to help us stop the flow of guns."

Egypt to announce result of constitution vote on Tuesday

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt will announce on Tuesday the official results of a vote on its new constitution, the head of the elections committee told state media on Monday, a step which paves the way for the formation of a new parliament in about two months.

The creation of a new constitution is a vital step in Egypt's transition to democracy almost two years after the fall of military-backed strongman Hosni Mubarak.

But the opposition says the text, crafted mostly by President Mohamed Mursi's Islamist allies, fails to guarantee personal freedom and the rights of women and minorities. It says it will lead to more trouble in the most populous Arab nation.

Unofficial tallies from the Muslim Brotherhood - which catapulted Mursi into the presidency this year - indicated that 64 percent had approved the charter. An opposition tally had a similar result.

"The Supreme Elections Committee will announce on Tuesday at 7 P.M. (17:00 GMT) the results of the referendum on the new constitution," judge Samir Abu el-Matti told state radio and TV late on Monday.

Matti also said that the committee, which is led by judges, had spent the last two days investigating opposition and rights' groups accusations of voting fraud.

Mursi's critics said the vote, conducted in two stages in a process that ended on Saturday, had been marred by a litany of irregularities, and have demanded a full inquiry.

The opposition, a loose alliance of socialists, liberal-minded Muslims and Christians, have also noted that less than a third of those eligible turned out to vote, undermining the legitimacy of the new constitution.

ELECTION LOOMS

If the "yes" vote is confirmed, a parliamentary election will follow in about two months, setting the stage for Islamists to renew their battle with more secular-minded opponents.

Opposition politician Mohamed ElBaradei, a Nobel peace prize winner, urged Mursi to form an all-inclusive government together with the liberal camp in order to patch up divisions and steer Egypt out of trouble in a democratic way.

"I am ready to join hands with President Mursi on condition that he forms a national (unity) government and speaks as president for all Egyptians," he told the daily Al-Shorouk.

ElBaradei, the former head of the U.N. nuclear agency, said a new assembly should rewrite the draft - a call unlikely to be heeded by Mursi, who is keen to push it through quickly.

By forcing the pace on the constitution, Mursi risks squandering the opportunity to build consensus for the austerity measures desperately needed to kick-start a the ailing economy, economists say.

Highlighting investor concerns, Standard and Poor's cut Egypt's long-term credit rating and said another cut was possible if political turbulence worsened.

Responding to what it said were market rumors, the central bank said it was taking steps to safeguard bank deposits.

Some Egyptians say they have withdrawn their funds from banks out of concern that they will be frozen by authorities.

LEGISLATIVE POWERS

Under the new constitution, legislative powers that have been temporarily held by Mursi move to the Islamist-dominated upper house of parliament until a new lower house is elected.

The make-up of the Supreme Constitutional Court, which Islamists say is filled with Mubarak-era appointees bent on throwing up legal challenges to Mursi's rule, will also change as its membership is cut to 11 from 18.

Those expected to leave include Tahani al-Gebali, who has described Mursi as an "illegitimate president".

The low turnout in voting on the constitution has prompted some newspapers to question how much support the charter really had, with opponents saying Mursi lost the vote in much of the capital.

"The referendum battle has ended, and the war over the constitution's legitimacy has begun," said newspaper Al-Shorouk, while a headline in Al-Masry Al-Youm read: "Constitution of the minority".

The head of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, Saad al-Katatni, wrote on Facebook that the group's members were "extending our hands to all political parties and all national forces", adding: "We will all start a new page."

But the opposition National Salvation Front say the new constitution only deepens a rift between the liberals and Islamists who combined to overthrow Mubarak, and that they will keep challenging it through protests and other democratic means.

"We do not consider this constitution legitimate," liberal politician Amr Hamzawy said on Sunday, arguing that it violated personal freedoms.

The run-up to the referendum was marred by protests triggered by Mursi's decision to award himself broad powers on November 22. At least ten people were killed in clashes in Cairo and violence also flared in Egypt's second city, Alexandria.
