Syria protest hubs hit as envoy arrives in Russia

Syria's army resumed heavy shelling of the rebel hubs of Homs and Hama on Saturday, monitors reported, as international envoy Kofi Annan arrived in Russia in a new push for peace.

Mortar rounds rained down on the flashpoint central city of Homs and nearby town of Qusayr from early morning, killing at least 10 people, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

At least 20 people were reported killed nationwide, among them four government soldiers.

The fiercest regime assault targeted Saraqeb in the northwestern province of Idlib which was stormed by troops backed by 26 tanks that "took up position to split the town in two," activist Nureddin al-Abdo told AFP.

"Assad has to take the first step: he must pull the Syrian army out of large cities," the lower house of parliament's foreign affairs chief Mikhail Margelov said on Thursday.

Russia sells billions of dollars in arms to Syria and analysts warn that Russian interests in Syria are too important for it to allow Western and regional powers to independently dictate the battle-scarred nation's fate.

NEW DELHI (AP) ? India's scandal-plagued government lost hundreds of billions of dollars by selling coalfields to companies without competitive bidding, according to a leaked audit report that the auditor itself called misleading.

Angry lawmakers blocked proceedings in Parliament on Thursday after the findings by India's Comptroller and Auditor General were printed by The Times of India newspaper.

Outraged opposition party leaders demanded an explanation from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of why about 155 coalfields were sold to select private and state-run companies without competitive bidding, resulting in an estimated loss of nearly $210 billion.

"The coal scam is very serious. It's more serious than the 2G spectrum scam," said Prakash Javadekar, a spokesman of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party.

The Comptroller and Auditor General criticized the furor as premature, noting in a letter to Singh that the leaked draft "did not even constitute our pre-final draft and are exceedingly misleading."

The letter, released Tuesday afternoon by Singh's office, cast the report's details as preliminary observances and said recent Coal Ministry clarifications "have changed our thinking." It said the auditors have not concluded that the coalfield buyers' gains were equal to any losses in the government treasury.

"The leak of the initial draft causes great embarrassment as the audit report is still under preparation. Such leakage causes very deep anguish," the auditor said in the letter.

Singh's government has been embarrassed repeatedly as senior ministers and officials faced corruption charges stemming from the hosting of the 2010 Commonwealth Games and the sale of cellphone spectrum ? also without competitive bidding ? that auditors said lost the country billions of dollars.

The auditors' draft report said the allocation of the coalfields between 2004 and 2009 had resulted in windfall gains of $97 billion for private companies.

Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal refused to respond to the leaked report. He said the government had followed a "transparent" policy of advertising for the allocation of the coal blocks.

He said state governments were consulted and all responses to the advertisements were screened by a committee before they were sold.

Opposition parties accused the government of causing massive losses to the country by not holding auctions and instead following an arbitrary policy of rewarding certain companies.

"Such enormous largesse showered on profit-making private companies is nothing but a huge scam," said Sitaram Yechury of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

"It is disturbing that these coal blocks were allocated at a time when the prime minister was in charge of the coal ministry," he said.

Coal, being a natural resource, cannot be gifted to private corporations at throwaway prices, opposition lawmakers said.

"This is a government of scams," said Gurudas Dasgupta, another lawmaker, who demanded that government recover the losses from the companies.

The state auditor's report comes a year after the government was embroiled in a similar scandal over the sale of cellular operating licenses under a "first-come, first-serve" process that netted the government 124 billion rupees ($2.7 billion).

Some licenses were awarded to ineligible participants who in turn sold their stakes at much higher prices than they bought them from the government.

The CAG reported that the 2008 sale of cellular operating licenses resulted in losses of nearly $36 billion in potential government revenue.

French gunman dead after jumping from window: minister

TOULOUSE, France (Reuters) - A 23-year-old gunman suspected of killing seven people in southwestern France in the name of al Qaeda, jumped from a window to his death in a hail of bullets after police stormed his apartment on Thursday.

"At the moment when a video probe was sent into the bathroom, the killer came out of the bathroom, firing with extreme violence," Interior Minister Claude Gueant said, adding that Merah was firing several guns at once.

"In the end, Mohamed Merah jumped from the window with his gun in his hand, continuing to fire. He was found dead on the ground," he told reporters at the scene. Two police commandos were wounded.

Special forces entered the five-storey building in a suburb of Toulouse after besieging Merah since early on Wednesday.

Gueant said earlier police hoped to capture Merah, who had confessed to police negotiators to killing three soldiers as well as three Jewish children and a rabbi at a school, alive.

President Nicolas Sarkozy, whose already slim chances of beating off a Socialist challenger in next month's presidential election may be affected by his handling of the crisis, has vowed justice will be done and urged people not to seek revenge.

He said his only regret was not having been able to carry out more killings.

US Rep. Jackson Jr. wins Illinois primary battle

CHICAGO (AP) ? U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. easily won the Democratic nomination Tuesday after a heated Illinois primary, but the fate of another longtime congressman was still too early to call, along with the matchup for the state's only open congressional seat.

Jackson and Republican U.S. Rep. Don Manzullo faced the toughest primary battles of their careers, and a new congressional map, which dramatically reshaped partisan territory in Illinois, added to the intensity.

With 80 percent of precincts reporting, Jackson had 71 percent of the votes, while his challenger, former one-term U.S. Rep. Debbie Halvorson, had 20 percent. Halvorson called Jackson to concede.

"I had to take it very seriously," Jackson told The Associated Press Tuesday night. "I never take an opponent lightly. She put up a very, very strong challenge."

Meanwhile, Iraq war veteran Tammy Duckworth won a primary contest over former Illinois deputy treasurer Raja Krishnamoorthi in Chicago's suburbs and will run against outspoken Republican U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh in November.

Ballots were still being counted for another election in the southern half of the state was to determine candidates in the race to replace retiring Democratic U.S. Rep. Jerry Costello.

Democrats say they could gain as many as five new seats in Illinois come November, pushing them closer to regaining the U.S. House. But Republicans say they're poised to pick up a seat in the southern half of the state and can successfully defend challenges to the five GOP congressmen who won in 2010 during a Republican surge in Illinois.

Republicans will lose at least one congressman because the state lost a congressional seat in the remap ? from 19 to 18 ? and there's an incumbent matchup in north-central Illinois.

Manzullo, who has served 10 terms, was trailing behind freshman U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, a former Air Force pilot who was among the five GOP freshmen elected two years ago.

Kinzinger's old district was split in the remap, which was handled by Democrats and carved out territory in their favor. He decided to run against Manzullo, who is currently serving in the 16th Congressional District. The district is one of Illinois' most conservative pockets, curving from the Wisconsin border to the Indiana line and including farms, far flung Chicago suburbs and manufacturing communities.

No Democrats ran in the Tuesday primary, so the winner will almost certainly head back to Washington.

The primary for Jackson, who first took office in 1995, was the most intense of his career. The son of the civil rights activist mounted an aggressive primary fight with Halvorson as she has made questions about his ethics central to her campaign. While he has denied any wrongdoing, the House Ethics Committee is investigating Jackson's ties to imprisoned ex-Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

However, the issue appeared to resonate little with voters who cited his long experience in the district which extends from neighborhoods on Chicago's South Side, its south suburbs and beyond.

"Jesse Jackson Jr. has been in my community for a long time and I support him," said Oscar Dixon, 63, of Chicago. "He's like a family member... He really delivers for me."

Duckworth, an Army helicopter pilot who lost both her legs in a rocket-propelled grenade attack in 2004, focused her victory on Walsh. The tea party candidate has been in the spotlight for criticizing President Barack Obama. Duckworth called him an extreme voice for the district which is one of the most diverse on the congressional map and spans several northwest Chicago suburbs.

"I spent my entire adult life in service to this nation and I would be honored to continue that service as a member of Congress," she told supporters at her suburban victory party.

In the southern half of the state, three Democrats and three Republicans were on the ballot in the race to replace Costello, whose tenure is the longest of any Democrat in Illinois' congressional delegation. Costello announced last October that he wouldn't seek another term.

Republicans saw the race as an opportunity to flip the seat into the GOP column in the district that runs from Illinois suburbs of St. Louis to the state's southernmost tip.

A lot of the people at a home health care center are very angry and don?t want to be there. They get a little grumpy from sitting around in their wheelchairs all day. But enough of all the negative things about home health care. There are so many good things that I hear about it to help out weigh the negative.

I have heard that not everyone in home health care is grumpy and not wanting to be there. I have heard of many sweet hearted people in home health care. They thank those who take care of them and thank them for there services. I know someone who although they don?t work at the home health care any longer, they still get phone calls from those they helped. They still keep in touch with those the took care of. It is quite sweet and fun to see a patient who really appreciates what health care they have been given.

My friends have worked with two different fields of home health care. One that deals mainly with those with disabilities, both mental or physical. And one that worked more and took care of seniors. In senior care you can get some of the sweetest or grumpiest people in the world. I have helped volunteer at a place where it is mainly senior patients that need help. We have sang songs and played instruments for them. They appreciate it so much and are so sweet. Senior care is such a great thing. The home health care systems are just phenomenal. As you talk to those in senior care, you can really get a better perspective on life and what is important. Senior care patients can tell story after story of what they have learned in life. And even though a lot has changed. Most principles still apply.

One last thing that my friends have done with home health care is work with the mentally handicap. They are such sweet and innocent people. So much to learn from them as you take care of them. Sometimes a family will come to visit their daughter who is a patient in a home health care center. It is great to see the presence of their family light up their faces. If you are ever looking for a job in home health care. It definitely will pay off. And they are always in need of more helping hands.

(Reuters) - Facebook Inc is taking the next step on its IPO journey and has summoned research analysts from Wall Street banks to its Menlo Park headquarters early next week for a pre-roadshow briefing to discuss the finer points of its business and books.

The world's largest social network, which is racing toward what would be Silicon Valley's largest ever initial public offering, will not disclose new information during the meeting with analysts.

Instead, it will outline its strategy and answer questions on how to analyze its operations and help analysts build models on its financials, two sources told Reuters on condition of anonymity because the meeting is not public.

Called a "due diligence meeting", such pre-roadshow pow-wows are standard fare for future debutantes.

It is not clear how many analysts have been invited. One source said analysts from five to 10 of the largest banks underwriting Facebook's IPO will likely attend the meeting.

A second source said analysts from most banks helping underwrite the offering have been invited to the meeting, scheduled for Monday. Both sources would not elaborate because of the conditions of the presentation.

Facebook listed 31 banks as underwriters on its IPO in an updated regulatory filing on March 7.

A spokesman for the company declined to comment.

Founded by Mark Zuckerberg in a Harvard dorm room, Facebook is the world's No. 1 online social network with more than 845 million users. The company plans to raise $5 billion in an IPO expected to value the company at $75 billion to $100 billion, in Silicon Valley's largest-ever coming-out party.

Some on Wall Street worry about the company's over-reliance on advertising for 85 percent of its revenue, which totaled $3.7 billion last year. Others will want to know how Facebook intends to fend off increasing competition from the likes of Google Inc, which is cultivating its own social network called Google+.

Also, corporate governance experts have called attention to the fact that Zuckerberg will retain disproportionate control over the company after it goes public.

The company has said it expects to trade under the ticker FB when it makes its debut as a publicly traded company, expected in mid 2012.
