Rabbit wears contact lenses with light-emitting diode: New class of transparent, stretchable electrodes

May 30, 2013 ? Ulsan National Institute of Science & Technology (UNIST) has demonstrated that a live rabbit could wear contact lenses fitted with inorganic light-emitting diode with no side effects. This new class of hybrid transparent and stretchable electrode paves the way for flexible displays, solar cells, and electronics.

The scientists have combined graphene with silver nanowires to form a thin, transparent and stretchable electrode which overcome the weaknesses of each individual material, resulting in a new class of electrodes with widespread possible applications including picture taking and scanning using soft contact lenses.

Transparent electrodes have been widely used in things like touch screens, flat-screen TVs, solar cells and light-emitting devices. Commonly made from indium tin oxide(ITO), it is brittle and cracks thus losing functionality if flexed. It also degrades over time, and is expensive due to the limited quantities of indium metal.

As an alternative, the networks of randomly distributed mNWs have been considered as promising candidates for next-generation transparent electrodes, due to their low-cost, high-speed fabrication of transparent electrodes. However, the number of disadvantages of the mNW networks limited their integration into commercial devices. They have low breakdown voltage, typically high NW-NW junction resistance, high contact resistance between network and active materials, material instability and poor adhesion to plastic substrates.

Graphene is also well known as good a candidate for transparent electrode because of their unique electrical properties and high mechanical flexibility. However, scalable graphene synthesis methods for commercialization produces lower quality graphene with individual segments called grains which increases the electrical resistance at boundaries between these grains.

Silver nanowires, on the other hand, have high resistance because they are randomly oriented like a jumble of toothpicks facing in different directions. In this random orientation, there are many contact between nanowires, resulting in high resistance due to large junction resistance of nanowires. Due to these drawbacks, neither is good for conducting electricity, but a hybrid structure, combined from two materials, is.

The hybrid material presents a high electrical and optical performance with mechanical flexibility and stretchability for flexible electronics. The hybrid transparent electrode has a low "sheet resistance" and high transmittance. There's almost no change in its resistance when bent and folded. Where the ITO is bent, its resistance increases significantly. Additionally the hybrid material preserve its electrical and optical properties against thermal oxidation condition

The graphene-mNW hybrid structure developed by the UNIST research team is a new class of electrodes and may soon find use in a variety of other applications. The research team demonstrated Inorganic light-emitting diode (ILED) devices fitted on a soft eye contact lens using the transparent, stretchable interconnects of the hybrid electrodes as an application example.

As an in vivo study, this contact lens was worn by a live rabbit eye for five hours and no abnormal behavior, such as bloodshot eye or the rubbing of eye areas were observed in the live rabbit. Wearing eye contact lenses, picture-taking and scanning, is not science fiction anymore.

The research was led by Jang-Ung Park, professor of the School of Nano-Bioscience and Chemical Engineering at UNIST. "We believe the hybridization between two-dimensional and one-dimensional nanomaterials presents a promising strategy toward flexible, wearable electronics and implantable biosensor devices, and indicate the substantial promise of future electronics," said Prof. Park.

Kelly Osbourne: Sex, drugs, rock & roll 'ain't fun'

Kelly Osbourne in Cosmopolitan.

No one can say Kelly Osbourne isn't loyal to her parental units. Her father, rocker Ozzy Osbourne, fell off the wagon in April, admitting he had relapsed into drinking and taking drugs -- and she stood by him.

And in the July issue of Cosmopolitan, she says she understands where her dad is coming from. "I love and respect that he's honest enough to say, 'Yes, I did this. It was my fault,'" she told the magazine. "He's a real man. Most people would hide, and he doesn't. It doesn't make me love him any less.

"It took a long time to get to that place, but I understand it now," she adds. "It made me break down and cry when my parents rather than the Boston Marathon were on the cover of the British newspapers. People lost their children from a terrorist attack, and that's superseded by this bulls--- story that is not even real."

And perhaps some of her empathy comes from having gone down some of the same road as her father. "He's an addict; I'm an addict," she says. "It's going to be one of those things we battle for the rest of our lives. I take the necessary precautions. If you're not happy and healthy, it's not worth any of it. Everyone says sex, drugs, and rock and roll are fun. It ain't fun. It is not something to glorify."

Samsung's Galaxy S 4 mini stars in Three UK's new video

Samsung Galaxy S 4 mini video

Can't wait to get your hands on a Galaxy S 4 mini? Samsung has yet to announce its price and availability, but until then you can imagine you're Three UK's Brendan Arndt in the video below. Arndt shows off the much-rumored baby S 4 for us, as the phone poses for close-up shots in various angles. While the clip merely reiterates all the specs Samsung confirmed, it also shows how relatively tiny the S 4 mini is compared to its full-sized sibling and the gargantuan Galaxy Mega. That, despite the device boasting a 4.3-inch screen, which is even bigger than the iPhone 5's. Check after the jump to watch the S 4 mini in all its not-so-Lilliputian glory.

ESPN's Bill Simmons Says Memphis Grizzlies ... - Business Insider

ESPN's Bill Simmons made an odd remark about the Martin Luther King Jr. assassination and Memphis sports on his podcast yesterday.

Simmons was in Memphis last week for the Western Conference Finals. While he was there, he walked past the Lorraine Motel where MLK was killed in 1968.

He said that the assassination still affects the collective psyche of the city, and causes Grizzlies fans to be overly tense.

Here's the full quote:

"I didn't know that much about Memphis, but I didn't realize the effect that [the MLK] shooting had on that city. ... The shooting kind of set the tone for how the city thinks about stuff. Like even ? we were at Game 3 right ? great crowd. They fall behind and the whole crowd got tense. It was like, 'Oh no, something bad is going to happen.' And I think it starts from that shooting and it's just that mindset they have."

The Grizzlies were down 2-0 in the series heading into Game 3. So maybe Grizz fans were tense because they were on the verge of going down 3-0 to a vastly superior team?

There's nothing really offensive here. But it certainly sounds silly to claim that there's a causal relationship between a 45-year-old murder and the relative energy level of an NBA crowd at a specific game.

You wouldn?t know it to look at the products, but the school yearbook business is kind of shady. There?s a good chance you and your kid?s school are paying way too much for yearbooks?sometimes thousands or tens of thousands a year too much.

Here?s how the traditional yearbook business works: When big yearbook providers sign up with a school, they ask the school to predict how many books it will need for the year. These estimates are due months before graduation. Because class sizes and demographics shift from year to year?and because some kids have stopped buying yearbooks altogether, thanks perhaps to Facebook?yearbook advisers don?t have much to go on when they?re making their guesses.

For schools and for parents, there are big costs to guessing wrong. If a school orders too few yearbooks, some kids who want a book will go without. That?s why schools tend to err on the side of guessing high?and then get stuck with unsold yearbooks, and a huge bill to the yearbook company. To cover costs of overprinting, some schools add an extra fee to the yearbooks?$10 or $20 per copy that you, the parent, must pay. Even so, lots of schools end up in hock to their yearbook providers. For instance, over the last few years, George Washington High School in San Francisco, one of the largest schools in the city, has had to eat the cost of so many unsold books that it now owes its yearbook company $50,000, according to the school?s yearbook adviser.

When Aaron Greco, a young tech entrepreneur, started sniffing around the yearbook business a few years ago, he was surprised by these shenanigans. The fundamental problem with the yearbook business, he realized, was that big yearbook providers were producing their books using offset printing?an expensive printing system that?s great for books with large print runs but that leads to high costs and little flexibility for yearbooks, whose print runs number in the hundreds or low thousands. Over the past decade, we?ve seen the rise of digital on-demand printing, which is now commonly used for photo books (the sort you order from Shutterfly or Blurb) and self-publishing. Greco had a brilliant idea: Why not use the same printing process for yearbooks?

Thus was born TreeRing, Greco?s four-year-old yearbook startup, which now serves 2,000 schools across the country and will produce about 200,000 yearbooks this year. By printing yearbooks on demand, TreeRing beats traditional yearbook companies in pretty much every way.

When schools sign up with TreeRing, they don?t have to pay anything to the company?TreeRing?s only economic relationship is with parents who buy the yearbooks, so schools will never end up in debt to the firm. What?s more, the school doesn?t have to make a guess about how many yearbooks it needs, because TreeRing prints a book only after a student orders it. Digital printing also lets students customize their books?in addition to the ?core? yearbook produced by the yearbook class, kids can add more pages that they design themselves. Finally?because schools don?t have to bake in the cost of overprinting, and because TreeRing prints books in the spring, when there?s excess capacity at on-demand printing facilities?TreeRing?s yearbooks are often cheaper than those offered by traditional yearbook providers.* TreeRing sells a 140-page hardcover yearbook?the average size for a high school?for around $50. That?s about $25 less than the price of a traditional high school yearbook.

What Can Microsoft Do To Make You Want The Xbox One?

It seems clear now that few actually intend to purchase the Xbox One right out of the gate. Definitely few around here at PSXE, which makes sense.

In general, though, things haven't gone well for Microsoft over the last week or so. So here's the question- We're all gamers, right? We all have ideas. We all know what we want. We all basically know what Microsoft did terribly wrong when unveiling the Xbox One. Now you don't want one. But what can be done to make you want one in the future...?

Some people are apparently so bitter about this mess that they've sworn off Microsoft completely. We've had more than a few people sign up at PSXE, saying they were once admitted hardcore Xbox fans, but they just couldn't believe what they saw when the Xbox One was announced. They've switched teams and they're not looking back. Other people are trying to be a bit more patient and objective; they're waiting to hear a little more and above all else, they want to hear about more games. There are a few promising ones, after all, and several more could be revealed at E3. And I honestly hope that happens.

So, would that do it? A few more high-profile, totally awesome-looking Xbox One exclusives? Or would Microsoft have to rescind a few of their planned programs and policies? For instance, it seems possible that Sony has axed their own DRM plans after the consumer backlash. So maybe Microsoft can do something similar and reclaim lost loyalty. Or perhaps you'll conclude that you don't mind a few of the restrictions and mandates quite as much as you thought. Like I said, we're all gamers, so what can Microsoft do? Is it already over or can they win you back?

Connected Data announces Transporter v2.0 focuses on user experience and mobile apps

It's been an exciting couple days for the folks at Connected Data. After entering into a merger agreement with Drobo yesterday, the company's just announced Transporter v2.0 -- the latest software for its cloud-aware NAS. To jog your memory, Transporter is a device that lets you share data online, Dropbox-style, without a subscription fee. It was launched on Kickstarter last year and priced at $199 for the basic hardware (BYO hard drive), $299 for 1TB and $399 for 2TB. Version 2.0 brings major user experience improvements on Mac and PC thanks to better integration with Finder and Windows Explorer, including right-click and drag-and-drop functionality. Users can now easily share links to their files and choose how their folders are synced (locally or remotely). The update includes new mobile apps which provide remote Transporter access and management from any iOS or Android device. Connected Data also made firewall support more robust for users regardless of their network environment. Transporter v2.0 will launch sometime in June -- hit the break for the full PR.

Police: Lawmaker holds 2 foreigners in Yemen city

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? Gunmen abducted two South African citizens Monday in Yemen's second largest city, Taiz, and police said a lawmaker was behind the kidnapping to pressure the government to hand over a disputed piece of land.

It was the latest twist in Yemen's bumpy road to democracy after more than three decades of autocratic rule that ended with longtime President Ali Abdullah Saleh's ouster in an uprising last year. The country's new president is struggling to unify the country and its armed forces in the face of resistance from an active al-Qaida branch in Yemen and powerful tribes.

Abductions are not rare in Yemen, but Monday's kidnapping of foreigners was unusual in its circumstances and is the first in Taiz, near the southwestern tip of the Arabian Peninsula.

Police said that they received a call from assistants of lawmaker Abdel-Hamid el-Batra saying he organized the kidnapping outside the Taiz Plaza hotel because of a dispute with the government over a piece of land. The lawmaker pledged to hand over the foreigners in exchange for the land, police officials said. They spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to speak to reporters.

El-Batra belongs to the country's ruling party and has been a member of parliament for 10 years.

Unlike other parts of Yemen, Taiz has been relatively free of the type of violence other provinces have seen. However, in March 2012 al-Qaida claimed responsibility for killing an American teacher there, saying in a post on militant websites that he was proselytizing for Christianity.

Al-Qaida in Yemen is expanding, according to President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, and has used assassinations and abductions of foreigners as a way to challenge the central authority. The United States considers the Yemen branch to be al-Qaida's most active and dangerous.

In 2011, during the uprising against Saleh, al-Qaida overran entire cities and towns in the south of the country. Taiz, however, remained a hub for elite Yemeni activists and academics who camped out for months in protest until the longtime ruler stepped down.

Scientists develop CO2 sequestration technique

May 28, 2013 ? Lawrence Livermore scientists have discovered and demonstrated a new technique to remove and store atmospheric carbon dioxide while generating carbon-negative hydrogen and producing alkalinity, which can be used to offset ocean acidification.

The team demonstrated, at a laboratory scale, a system that uses the acidity normally produced in saline water electrolysis to accelerate silicate mineral dissolution while producing hydrogen fuel and other gases. The resulting electrolyte solution was shown to be significantly elevated in hydroxide concentration that in turn proved strongly absorptive and retentive of atmospheric CO2.

Further, the researchers suggest that the carbonate and bicarbonate produced in the process could be used to mitigate ongoing ocean acidification, similar to how an Alka Seltzer neutralizes excess acid in the stomach.

"We not only found a way to remove and store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while producing valuable H2, we also suggest that we can help save marine ecosystems with this new technique," said Greg Rau, an LLNL visiting scientist, senior scientist at UC Santa Cruz and lead author of a paper appearing this week (May 27) in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. When carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere, a significant fraction is passively taken up by the ocean forming carbonic acid that makes the ocean more acidic. This acidification has been shown to be harmful to many species of marine life, especially corals and shellfish. By the middle of this century, the globe will likely warm by at least 2 degrees Celsius and the oceans will experience a more than 60 percent increase in acidity relative to pre-industrial levels. The alkaline solution generated by the new process could be added to the ocean to help neutralize this acid and help offset its effects on marine biota. However, further research is needed, the authors said.

"When powered by renewable electricity and consuming globally abundant minerals and saline solutions, such systems at scale might provide a relatively efficient, high-capacity means to consume and store excess atmospheric CO2 as environmentally beneficial seawater bicarbonate or carbonate," Rau said. "But the process also would produce a carbon-negative 'super green' fuel or chemical feedstock in the form of hydrogen."

Most previously described chemical methods of atmospheric carbon dioxide capture and storage are costly, using thermal/mechanical procedures to concentrate molecular CO2 from the air while recycling reagents, a process that is cumbersome, inefficient and expensive.

"Our process avoids most of these issues by not requiring CO2 to be concentrated from air and stored in a molecular form, pointing the way to more cost-effective, environmentally beneficial, and safer air CO2 management with added benefits of renewable hydrogen fuel production and ocean alkalinity addition," Rau said.

The team concluded that further research is needed to determine optimum designs and operating procedures, cost-effectiveness, and the net environmental impact/benefit of electrochemically mediated air CO2 capture and H2 production using base minerals.

Other Livermore researchers include Susan Carroll, William Bourcier, Michael Singleton, Megan Smith and Roger Aines.

Obama honors veterans by laying wreath, doing talk

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) ? President Barack Obama has laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns in a visit to Arlington National Cemetery, the final resting place for many American war heroes.

Obama rode by motorcade from the White House to the hallowed burial grounds in suburban Virginia on a sun-splashed, but cool spring holiday. Cannon fire was heard in the distance.

An Honor Guard stood at attention along the road that carried the president to tomb site. The headstones at the national cemetery were adorned with mini-American flags.

Appearing before a hushed crowd at the venerable cemetery, Obama strode with uniformed military officers to the site of the Tomb and set the wreath in place after the playing of the National Anthem.

The president was to give a speech following the wreath-laying.

Indy 500 passes midway point

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Tony Kanaan and Marco Andretti charged to the front during a wild first half of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, both trying to win at a place that has caused plenty of heartache.

Kanaan quickly moved through the field from the outside of the fourth row in his bid to finally win at the Brickyard. The Brazilian had led 225 laps coming into the race, more than any other non-winner besides Michael Andretti and Rex Mays, yet has never taken the checkered flag.

He finished second in 2004 and has twice finished third.

Marco Andretti started on the outside of the front row and spent the first 29 laps playing leapfrog with Kanaan as the standard-bearer for his family bids to end the ''Andretti Curse.'' The family hasn't captured the fabled Memorial Day weekend race since his grandfather, Mario, won in 1969. Michael Andretti has been to Victory Lane twice as a team owner with the late Dan Wheldon in 2005 and Dario Franchitti in 2007, but never won the race as a driver.

Marco Andretti was second in 2006 in the second-closest finish in the race's history.

Franchitti, the defending race winner, and Helio Castroneves began the day in pursuit of their fourth victory. Only A.J. Foyt, Rick Mears and Al Unser have won the Indy 500 four times.

As the race reached the halfway mark, Team Penske roared to the front.

Will Power spent a stint in the lead before teammate A.J. Allmendinger, making his Indy 500 debut, picked his way through the field before falling back because of a problem with his safety belts. Allmendinger is a former open-wheel star who spent time in NASCAR before losing his ride after a failed drug test. He was given a second chance in the Indianapolis 500 by Roger Penske - the same Sprint Cup team owner who had fired him.

Allmendinger was cheered on by Sprint Cup champ Brad Keselowski, who was on hand to support his boss's teams before catching a quick flight to Charlotte for Sunday night's Coca-Cola 600.

''I want to experience the IndyCar life here and see what it's all about and how this race plays out,'' Keselowski said. ''I'm really excited to be here. This is my first Indy 500. I'm here soaking in one of the biggest races of the year with one of the best guys here, Roger Penske.'

The race began with a chill in the air - the temperature was 62 degrees, not much warmer than the coldest race in history (58, 1992). Thousands of fans who piled into the historic track were bundled up against a stiff breeze that swirled down the front straightaway, and many arrived late, some blaming new security measures put in place after the Boston Marathon bombings.

Several drivers said the colder weather could produce more speed - and more crashes. And it didn't take long for the first caution flag to come out.

J.R Hildebrand lost control in Turn 1 and slid into the outside wall. His car continued down the short chute before coming to a rest, where he climbed out of it without any injuries. It was Hildebrand who crashed on the final lap while leading two years ago.

''Just got a little loose in the middle of the corner, and I sort of got caught and spun around,'' Hildebrand said. ''We felt like we had a car that could run at the front.''

Most of the field had made its first pit stop when the second caution came out for Sebastian Saavedra, the 22-year-old Colombian driver for Dragon Racing.

The race resumed with pole sitter Ed Carpenter back at the front, though he also had a scare under caution. Carpenter was swerving back and forth to keep his tires warm when his car dived to the left, crossed through the grass in the corner and safely back onto the track.

Takuma Sato, who crashed while trying to pass for the lead on the final lap a year ago, also spun out exiting Turn 2. He managed to keep his A.J. Foyt Racing car out of the wall, though, and was able to stay on the lead lap when the race resumed.

Graham Rahal and teammate James Jakes were fined $10,000 for violating a rule that governs the way drivers blend back into the pack when they exit pit lane. Jakes was later assessed a drive-through penalty for a pit safety violation.

Editor column: Challenges of breaking news, and changing ...

A colleague remarked last week that what we do isn?t science. He was referring to making decisions as news breaks, details emerge and we learn more of the truth.

Naming juveniles who have been accused of crimes has been a topic of discussion in our newsroom ? and in this column ? in recent days and weeks, what with the death of soccer referee Ricardo Portillo after allegedly being punched by a 17-year-old player.

The Salt Lake Tribune has chosen to not identify the player as his case remains in juvenile court. The policy is based on the premise that someone who is not yet an adult deserves a degree of protection for making mistakes that may be, at least in part, the result of their immaturity and will affect them for the rest of their lives. If the teenager is certified as an adult for trial, we will name him.

Our own policy placed us in a problematic position when news broke Wednesday night that two young boys were found murdered in their West Point home, and their brother was missing.

Taking the lead from police, we published online that night and in print the next morning the name and photograph of the 15-year-old, who initially was thought to possibly be in danger but who had been found by midnight. Editors discussed whether or not to publish the identifying information and decided the potential benefits (finding the boy) outweighed the possible downside (that he was involved in the crime).

Then the story changed. Police identified him as the primary suspect in the homicide Thursday morning. We removed his photograph and name from our online coverage. His name does not appear in Friday?s print story. We explained to readers that we had identified the boy in earlier stories, as he initially was the subject of a missing-person investigation by police.

We realize by doing this we are trying to ? pick your clich? ? unring the bell, put the genie back in the bottle. The boy?s name is out there. Other news media will continue to name him, and his identity likely remains somewhere in cyberspace, attached to a Tribune story, and it is in Thursday?s print edition.

But we?ve done the best we can to follow a policy we believe is sound. Juveniles are a special case and deserving of special consideration. They are still children. As in the case of the soccer player, if the courts decide the 15-year-old will be tried as an adult, we will follow suit and publish his name.

No, this isn?t science.

Why Individuals Should Understand The Meaning Of Tantric ...

Majority of tantra students are confused regarding what an authentic tantric massage Hong Kong offers entails. This is well understandable, especially because many false operators exist in the industry hoping to trick clients into relaxation hoaxes. These fraudsters promote massaging benefits under the banner of eroticism.

The fraudulent dealers promote benefits of massaging under the guise of eroticism. It in fact is not even surprising that the ancient exercise of massaging is enjoying high market value at present. One needs to appreciate the distinction existing between Hong Kong tantric massage and erotic massage. The erotic type targets arousal of its recipient, which often involves manipulating sexual organs.

Apart from this erotic aspect, not much value is added onto this particular practice. This kind however does not match up to the excellence of tantra that is well renowned for imparting wholesomeness to its beneficiary. As such, tantra then gets to affect the entire personal welfare of its recipient.

Sexual healing forms a crucial part of overall health gains which a person gets just by experiencing therapeutic tantra massaging techniques. This quality does not alone constitute the primary objective of tantra, which connects two humans in various critical ways. Massaging of this kind allows its beneficiary freedom from regular strains arising from everyday hassles.

It also affords the individual benefiting entrance into deeper spiritual state of activity. If performed by a skilled professional on you, the Hong Kong tantric massage does deliver significant physical gains to clients. The body is able to absorb as well as process oxygen faster owing to this, resulting in improved blood circulation.

Most crucially, the body then eliminates muscular tensions which are both symptomatic and causative agents of stress. As tantric massage progresses, there are many portals which open up after having previously shut down. Sexual intimacy is just one among these.

If proper massaging exercise that is based on ritual gets administered by loving partners on each other, it can unite them in so many ways. First is that the beneficiaries are triggered into better sexual performance. This is quite therapeutic practice if performed with consistency.

One then attains healing in various aspects of psyche as well as spirit that might impede intimate loving action between partners. You also experience the privilege to give something to your partner without expecting much in return necessarily. Such action provides the opportunity of learning how to practice true love, which should not have any reservations for it to work efficiently.

This element is very important in keeping interpersonal fellowship healthy. If you are interested to know about tantric massage, seek advice from the internet, where many suggestions are available of proficient practitioners of this trade. Do not miss out on experiencing amazing outcall massage Hong Kong offers to clients. Seek counsel too from trusted persons about possible referrals who have practiced on them with great efficiency. Avoid the stresses of everyday living. Check into a credible clinic offering massaging services and you stand to gain in many ways. Make sure that you make use of the best tantric massage Hong Kong experts offer. Make sure that an expert who is well trained and experienced handles you.

Romao, Jabour, Flores and Aranburu triumphant in Round 3 of Quiksilver Saquarema Prime

Brazil?s Simao Romao, Hawaii?s Kiron Jabour, France?s Jeremy Flores and Basque Country?s Aritz Aranburu claimed success in their respective Round 3 (no-elimination Round of 24) heats of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 2013 Quiksilver Saquarema Prime, which continued at Itauna beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Friday, May 24, 2013.

The four surfers advanced through into the fifth round (Round of 16) following their Round 3 success.

After surviving the challenging conditions on the first and second day of competition, the surfers were given a bit a bit of a breather by nature, as high-performance four-to-six foot waves graced the main event site on the latest day.

The battle for a direct spot in the fifth round without having to go through the relegation round (Round 4) continued between the surfing talent from around the globe.

Romao found himself pitted against Peru?s Gabriel Villaran and Brazil?s Gabriel Medina in the fifth heat.

Despite Medina being considered the favourite to walk away victorious, it turned out to be the other Brazilian who managed to clinch the win.

Romao looked impressive from the moment he paddled into the sea and locked his first wave. Scoring a couple of points in the seven-point range off his best waves, he finished with a heat-total of 14.93 points.

With Villaran and Medina finishing with a heat-total of 9.53 and 9.10 points respectively, Romao ended up earning a convincing win to advance straight to the fifth round.

The sixth heat saw Jabour take on his compatriot Sebastian Zietz and Ireland?s Glenn Hall in a three-man battle for the Round 5 spot.

The Hawaiian surfer earned a 7.70 off his first business-wave and went on to back it up with a 6.50-point ride, thus registering a heat-total of 14.20 points. The score remained unbeatable until the end to seal the fate of the heat in his favour.

Hall finished with a heat-total of 12.40 points, while Zietz finished third after registering a two-wave total of 11.07 points. Both the surfers were consequently relegated to the fourth round (Round of 24).

Flores, currently in contention for ASP World Championship Title, put on the performance of the day as he took on his fellow countryperson Joan Duru and South Africa?s Dale Staples in the seventh heat.

The French surfer earned a near-perfect 9.80 off his first business-wave and backed it up with an 8.50-point ride, thus finishing with an impressive heat-total of 18.30 points.

?The conditions have completely changed since yesterday,? commented Flores. ?I?m happy to be doing well in the last couple of contests and I feel confident for the next heats.?

Duru and Staples were forced to take a trip to the relegation round after finishing with a heat-total of 14.00 and 11.37 points respectively.

The final heat of Round 3 was won by Aranburu, as he put on an impressive performance to eventually finish with a heat-total of 14.76 points, thus sending America?s Damien Hobgood and France?s Marc Lacomare, who finishing with a two-wave total of 11.27 and 10.80 points respectively, into the relegation round.

(AP) ? The Stone Temple Pilots accuse former frontman Scott Weiland of misusing the band's name to further his solo career and want a judge to strip the rocker of his ability to use the group's name or songs.

A lawsuit filed Friday in Los Angeles accuses Weiland of being chronically late to concerts while the group was together and having his lawyer attempt to interfere with the airplay of the group's new single "Out of Time."

Weiland and Stone Temple Pilots parted ways in February, and the 45-year-old singer said at the time that he learned of his ouster from a statement released to the media.

The lawsuit sheds light on the band's breakup, accusing Weiland of interacting with band mates only through lawyers or managers and showing up late to the group's 2012 shows. It cites Weiland's addiction struggles and poor performances as detriments to the band's earning potential.

"The band endured much strife and lost significant opportunities because of Weiland," the suit states.

In a message posted to his website Friday, Weiland said his former band mates shouldn't call themselves Stone Temple Pilots either.

"First of all they don't have the legal right to call themselves STP because I'm still a member of the band," he said. "And more importantly, they don't have the ethical right to call themselves Stone Temple Pilots because it's misleading and dishonest to the millions of fans that have followed us for so many years."

The suit claims the band owns the rights to the name Stone Temple Pilots, and the band's songs, copyrights and trademarks. Weiland has used many of the band's hits in his solo shows, the lawsuit states. The band wants a judge to block him from even calling himself a former member of the band.

The band has been reconstituted with Chester Bennington of Linkin Park taking the frontman role.

Although he did not mention the lawsuit, Weiland disputed that he is using the band's name to promote his new shows.

"When I tour on my own, it's never as Stone Temple Pilots. It's as Scott Weiland," he wrote. "The fans deserve to know what they're getting."

The lawsuit claims that Weiland's lawyer called the head of programming at KROQ, a Los Angeles modern rock station, and said if the station played "Out of Time" it would be infringing on Weiland's rights.

"Enough is enough," the band's lawsuit states. "Without relief from the court, Weiland will continue violating STP's rights, misappropriating STP assets and interfering with the band's livelihood."

The lawsuit states the band entered into agreements in 1996 and 2010 that state that no former members can use the Stone Temple Pilots name.

The band's hits include "Vasoline," ''Interstate Love Song" and "Plush," which won a Grammy in 1993 for best hard rock performance with vocal.

Weiland alluded to lawyers getting involved when the band's statement about his departure was released.

Phone messages left for Weiland's manager Andrea Pett-Joseph and lawyer Gary Stiffelman were not immediately returned Friday.

Driving and hands-free talking lead to spike in errors

May 24, 2013 ? Talking on a hands-free device while behind the wheel can lead to a sharp increase in errors that could imperil other drivers on the road, according to new research from the University of Alberta.

A pilot study by Yagesh Bhambhani, a professor in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine, and his graduate student Mayank Rehani, showed that drivers who talk using a hands-free cellular device made significantly more driving errors -- such as crossing the centre line, speeding and changing lanes without signalling -- compared with just driving alone. The jump in errors also corresponded with a spike in heart rate and brain activity.

"It is commonplace knowledge, but for some reason it is not getting into the public conscience that the safest thing to do while driving is to focus on the road," said Rehani, who completed the research for his master's thesis in rehabilitation science at the U of A.

The researchers became interested in the topic in 2009 shortly after Alberta introduced legislation that banned the use of handheld cellphones while driving but not hands-free devices. In this study, they used near infrared spectroscopy to study the brain activity of 26 participants who completed a driving course using the Virage VS500M driving simulator at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital.

Near infrared spectroscopy is a non-invasive optical technique that allows researchers to examine real-time changes in brain activity in the left prefrontal lobe. Participants were first tested in a control condition, using the simulator to drive in city street conditions using no telecommunications device. They were tested again while talking on a hands-free device during two-minute conversations that avoided emotionally charged topics.

The research team found there was a significant increase in brain activity while talking on a hands-free device compared with the control condition. A majority of participants showed a significant increase in oxyhemoglobin in the brain, with a simultaneous drop in deoxyhemoglobin -- a sign of enhanced neuronal activation during hands-free telecommunication.

"The findings also indicated that blood flow to the brain is significantly increased during hands-free telecommunication in order to meet the oxygen demands of the neurons under the 'distracted' condition," said Bhambhani.

He added the results did not reveal a significant relationship between enhanced neuronal activation and the increase in the number of driving errors, most likely because the near infrared spectroscopy measurements were recorded from a single site, the prefrontal lobe.

The findings are considered novel on a topic that is receiving considerable attention by policy-makers globally. Rehani's contribution to the project earned him the 2013 Alberta Rehabilitation Award for Innovation in Rehabilitation (Student).

The researchers note this is a preliminary study and hope that it can be part of a larger body of literature that can help inform policy-makers about the safety implications of using hands-free devices while driving.

For Rehani, the work was part of rewarding academic journey at the U of A, which gave him opportunities to do research in a number of areas in neuroscience. He said he received outstanding support from both the faculty and colleagues at the Glenrose -- including Quentin Ranson, the occupational therapist and rehabilitation technology lead who helped facilitate the simulator research.

"To have a Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine, which is the only free-standing faculty of its kind in Western Canada, and to have a hospital like the Glenrose dedicated to rehabilitation, is amazing," he said. "Both workplaces have such a collegial environment, with quality faculty and staff who are both working toward patient betterment. These institutions connect so well, it's fantastic."

Hubble reveals the Ring Nebula?s true shape

May 23, 2013 ? The Ring Nebula's distinctive shape makes it a popular illustration for astronomy books. But new observations by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope of the glowing gas shroud around an old, dying, sun-like star reveal a new twist.

"The nebula is not like a bagel, but rather, it's like a jelly doughnut, because it's filled with material in the middle," said C. Robert O'Dell of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. He leads a research team that used Hubble and several ground-based telescopes to obtain the best view yet of the iconic nebula. The images show a more complex structure than astronomers once thought and have allowed them to construct the most precise 3-D model of the nebula.

"With Hubble's detail, we see a completely different shape than what's been thought about historically for this classic nebula," O'Dell said. "The new Hubble observations show the nebula in much clearer detail, and we see things are not as simple as we previously thought."

The Ring Nebula is about 2,000 light-years from Earth and measures roughly 1 light-year across. Located in the constellation Lyra, the nebula is a popular target for amateur astronomers.

Previous observations by several telescopes had detected the gaseous material in the ring's central region. But the new view by Hubble's sharp-eyed Wide Field Camera 3 shows the nebula's structure in more detail. O'Dell's team suggests the ring wraps around a blue, football-shaped structure. Each end of the structure protrudes out of opposite sides of the ring.

The nebula is tilted toward Earth so that astronomers see the ring face-on. In the Hubble image, the blue structure is the glow of helium. Radiation from the white dwarf star, the white dot in the center of the ring, is exciting the helium to glow. The white dwarf is the stellar remnant of a sun-like star that has exhausted its hydrogen fuel and has shed its outer layers of gas to gravitationally collapse to a compact object.

O'Dell's team was surprised at the detailed Hubble views of the dark, irregular knots of dense gas embedded along the inner rim of the ring, which look like spokes in a bicycle wheel. These gaseous tentacles formed when expanding hot gas pushed into cool gas ejected previously by the doomed star. The knots are more resistant to erosion by the wave of ultraviolet light unleashed by the star. The Hubble images have allowed the team to match up the knots with the spikes of light around the bright, main ring, which are a shadow effect. Astronomers have found similar knots in other planetary nebulae.

All of this gas was expelled by the central star about 4,000 years ago. The original star was several times more massive than our sun. After billions of years converting hydrogen to helium in its core, the star began to run out of fuel. It then ballooned in size, becoming a red giant. During this phase, the star shed its outer gaseous layers into space and began to collapse as fusion reactions began to die out. A gusher of ultraviolet light from the dying star energized the gas, making it glow.

The outer rings were formed when faster-moving gas slammed into slower-moving material. The nebula is expanding at more than 43,000 miles an hour, but the center is moving faster than the expansion of the main ring. O'Dell's team measured the nebula's expansion by comparing the new Hubble observations with Hubble studies made in 1998.

The Ring Nebula will continue to expand for another 10,000 years, a short phase in the lifetime of the star. The nebula will become fainter and fainter until it merges with the interstellar medium.

Studying the Ring Nebula's fate will provide insight into the sun's demise in another 6 billion years. The sun is less massive than the Ring Nebula's progenitor star, so it will not have an opulent ending.

"When the sun becomes a white dwarf, it will heat more slowly after it ejects its outer gaseous layers," O'Dell said. "The material will be farther away once it becomes hot enough to illuminate the gas. This larger distance means the sun's nebula will be fainter because it is more extended."

In the analysis, the research team also obtained images from the Large Binocular Telescope at the Mount Graham International Observatory in Arizona and spectroscopic data from the San Pedro Martir Observatory in Baja California, Mexico.

A New Contender For the Google Reader Crown ? EldonReader

May 22nd, 2013 by Nate Hoffelder ? No Comments ? News Reader

eldon readerTime is running out to find a replacement for Google Reader, and if you?re still looking then I have a new alternative for you.

The developers of EldonReader contacted me earlier this week. This is a brand-new, completely independent Google Reader alternative which has launched in the past few weeks. It?s still quite raw, and it is in fact missing a few basic features (importing feeds from GR, for example), but I think all options are worth looking at.

This news reader eschews the more colorful design of say Feedly in favor of a theme with muted colors, lots of white space, and a relatively uncrowded design. As you can see from the following screen shot, Eldon Reader offers a very Google Readeresque design, only without detailed info like unread post counts and without the compactness that this information junky would require.

eldon reader screen shot

At the moment EldonReader has but a single viewing mode which shows the full post/excerpt. For me that is going to present something of a problem, but since I can?t import my GR account I suppose the viewing mode doesn?t matter.

There?s really not too much to the app at the moment, but I am told that the developers are working to add new features. They have a road map which includes many of the features whose absence I noted above.

Eldon Reader is currently accessible in the web browser. There is also an Android app in Google Play, a Chrome app, and there are plans to release an app for the iPad and iPhone.

On a related note, if the screen shots for the Chrome app are to be believed that version of Eldon Reader has a far more magazine style layout than the Android app or the browser version. It might be worth trying if that is your thing.

NEWARK (AP) ? Federal prosecutors in New Jersey say a Texas man is headed to prison for his role in a smuggling ring that brought hundreds of people to the United States.

Sanderlei Alves DaCruz received a 51-month prison sentence Wednesday and will have to serve three years of supervised release once he?s freed.

The 33-year-old Houston man had pleaded guilty to participating in a conspiracy to bring people into the United States illegally.

Prosecutors say that between January 2008 and June 2011, DaCruz conspired with several people as part of an elaborate smuggling scheme. They say many of those brought to America were young women from Brazil, most of whom agreed to repay part of their smuggling debt by working as dancers in strip clubs.
